Looking for a fun setting for your next family photo? Pack up the family and head to the Botanic Gardens!

My husband and I are both shutterbugs, so one Saturday in the spring we loaded up a wagon with 1 toddler, 2 cameras and accessories, a small cooler and headed off to the gardens.

Parking is adequate, but not too close to the entrance. The building is very nice with a gift shop, snack shop and nice reception area where you pay your $5 admission and can buy fish and goose food. The bathrooms are also very good.

When heading outside you will notice a variety of different areas that have structured gardens and many less formal areas. There is a rose garden, iris garden, Japanese garden and a nice wilderness type area. There is no shortage of nice trees to sit under and picnic or read a book.

We found many nice locations to stage photos of my son: a rustic fence, by one of the several fountains, amid a bunch of blooms or on one of the many nice boulders. There were also ample opportunities to take photos of the beautiful flowers and wildlife.

My son's favorite area (other than the fountain) was the pond with the koi and geese. WARNING: Geese are very outgoing- watch little fingers very carefully! The koi will swim right up to you and in several locations we were able to practically pet them!

Overall it is a good trip- mostly paved paths and places to sit and rest. Not a bad price for an occasional outing, but a little too steep for a monthly trip.

PROS: nice photo ops, relaxing, not crowded
CONS: not sure that it would hold kid's attention for too long

My department had a group party at Memphis Botanic Garden and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The planners who worked there really helped us in organizing this night. They even opened up the art gallery for our party to walk through and enjoy! The room they hosted for us was gorgeous as was the walk to/from each building. Prices were a little steep for individuals, but going as a group worked out nice!

PROS: BEAUTIFUL scenery, inside and out
CONS: Pricing

The Botanic Gardens are very special. There are so many beautiful spaces to wander through and enjoy. I particularly love the Japanese garden. It's also really special when they do concerts there - Symphony in the Gardens or Live at the Garden - so wonderful to hear great music in the great outdoors. I've also been to some really beautiful weddings there. It's definitely a place to visit and enjoy!
