I have been working with rescue dogs for over 20 years and over this time have had alot of experience with veterinarians. We took out beloved Suzie to 2 vets over the span of one month but her condition continued to worsen. We were recommended to go here from some other rescue dog lovers we trust. We saw Dr. VanTrease when we went there. He went through all of Suzie's records, and there was alot. He examined her and suggested what he thought the problem was. He was right. She had a rare autoimmune blood disorder. Dr. VanTrease was extremely available. In fact he gave us his cell phone to call over the time it took Suzie to get better and that was 3 weeks. There is no doubt that Suzie would not be here today, doing all she loves to do, had it not been for the amazing help Dr. VanTrease gave us. We can't say thank you enough. I have seen the other female vet and our experience with her has been the same. We recommend this veterinary practice to all our friends. Several have gone there and they too have found the doctors and staff amazing.

This clinic cares for all of my foster dogs--and there have been quite a few since we moved close to the SLAH in 2006.

The doctors have taken care of everything from missing toes to heartworms, and I have gotten loving care for my animals from everyone in the clinic.

Dr. Buck even spoke at a seminar that I organized for my clients--after hours, on his own time, at no charge.

Dr. Vantrease's knowledge and willingness to share it have helped me greatly as I care for so many animals at one time.

I went to this vet because my puppy had worms in her stool and our normal vet was closed for the day...mistake! After explaining to them that I wanted something to treat the worms and to keep it as cheap as possible, they explained to me that I could get some package deal that included everything for a puppy or some nonsense. I was foolish enough to ok this proposal and ended up paying $86 dollars for shots that my puppy did not need...the gave her a kennel cough shot...WTF! I just wanted something for tapeworms!! Basically I went, paid, and got absolutely nothing that I wanted and left confused and broke!

That's not the worst part: Dr. VanTrease is a friggin nutcase!!! I swear the first thing I said to my wife after bringing the dog home was...wow, that guy is weird! I was even commenting playfully to my puppy on the way home how strange ""Buck"" VanTrease is. I feel almost bad saying this but it is honestly like he had a child's mind. He would start sentences without finishing them, talk about the most random stuff, explain things over and over, mumble nonsense, say half of one word and half of another, I just cannot explain to y'all how weird this man is: by the end of the visit he was trying to explain my dogs personality to me: ""you see, she's a little shy but maybe also a little dominant..."" etc. no joke.

""Uh, um, you, got, we're gonna, you see, um,if she, I'll, how'd you name her?"" - Dr. Buck VanTrease (average sentence)

He just jacked her full of a couple of shots and then talked to the stars for about 15 mins. He made the tech go get something that he seemed pissed she did not have in the room just to show me an advertisement for some medication with pictures of worms like I was a child or something. Just read the other reviews!! This guy is crazy! It only takes about 2 sentences to come out of this guys mouth before any sane person can see that he is mental.

I also thoroughly made it clear that the only reason I was there was that my normal vet was closed and I just wanted to treat the worms...""Dr"" VanTrease got out a pad and paper and started outlining a plan for my puppies future visits as though he had no idea what I had just said. I just ended up smiling and nodding to him by the end of the visit half out of confusion and half out of desire to just get out of there!!

Wow, I could go on and on but I am tiring of even thinking about that man and his clinic. DO NOT GO THERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO TRUST YOUR FAMILY MEMBER TO THE HANDS OF A MADMAN who will not listen and not make sense.

I used to take my dog to this vet back when the older gentleman ran the place--He was totally awesome and always had reasonable prices. A new vet seems to be in control, and frankly, she's in it for the money.

I took my cat in there with a minor stomach ache because my other vet (Dr. Rogers) was out for the day. The current vet was like a salesperson and wanted to make me pay up to $700 in ridiculous fees for excessive treatments. What a freaking joke! She wouldn't even give me stomach medicine until I agreed to pay for X-rays, blood work, etc... Basically, she said unless you can pay me copious amounts of money, she cannot do any stomach treatment on my pet. Last time I checked, when I goto the doctor with a stomach ache, the doc doesn't make me get X-rays, bloodwork, etc... The doc simply gives me some medicine and if it works, I am done. If not, I go back and then the more costly treatments can begin.

I highly recommend going to Dr. Rogers on Burleson. I typically never pay over $65 and that includes medicine, office visit, and shots. He is honest and will give your pet the utmost treatment for a practical price. SOUTH LAMAR ANIMAL HOSPITAL WILL ROB YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been taking my pets to So Lamar Animal Hospital for over 5 years now and have always happy with the care given to my cats. One of my cats recently suffered a severe wound requiring surgery which is what has prompted me to write this review.

First, they have excellent hours. When I discovered my cats wound after 5:00 on Friday evening, I thought I would have to use an emergency hospital (and the higher fees). But, South Lamar was open. They are also open on Saturdays and early mornings.

Second, all of the staff and Doctors are wonderful with every animal that comes in there. It's just amazing to watch how they treat each pet as if it is their own, with the same loving and care.

Two notable employees deserve special mention.

Ryan, one of the Techs, is amazing. He took care of my severely wounded cat on that Friday night. One example of his compassionate care was that he called me that Friday evening after surgery (rather than waiting until Saturday morning) to reassure me that the surgery was successful and that my cat was resting comfortably. You just know that he sincerely cares about the animals in his care, as well for their human companions.

Holly also deserves special mention as she is that ""face"" we all first see upon our arrival and the one who schedules the appointments. Such a happy, friendly person who is a joy to work with. She makes getting a convenient appointment a pleasure, and really works to accommodate a difficult schedule.

If one is in need of vet services, I whole heartedly recommend South Lamar Animal Hospital!

We've taken our pets to South Lamar Animal Hospital for over 15 years. We were sad when Dr. Taylor retired - he helped us take care of a cat with FIV that lived to be 10 years old. We've had nothing by but excellent treatment of our 4 cats and dog by the vets who have followed. Recently our dog was hit by a car and sustained serious injuries. Dr. Van Trease and his staff stayed late into the night performing surgery and making sure he would be fine. The office staff is helpful and welcoming, and we've always received timely reminders for all of our pets for their checkups, vaccinations, and medications. Their prices on anti-flea meds are competitive with the mail order places, too.

I've heard several people say the place isn't the same as when Dr. Taylor was there and I'll be the first to admit we were wary of new faces, but we're very pleased and grateful that we have South Lamar Animal Hospital close by to provide such great care for our furry family members.

The office did not keep track of my dog's rabies vaccination. Less than a month after I took him in for a check up, and was given the all-clear, I found out his vaccination had expired and he now has to be quarantined for 10 days to the tune of over $300.

They couldn't diagnose (even with x-rays) a burst spleen! They charged me $85 for antibiotics for a burst spleen! Then they wouldn't refund it when I DID find out (from another vet) what the diagnosis was! All they were interested in was money! They essentially killed my dog! I reported them to the state vet agency who said they couldn't do anything about it. I flipped them off every time I drove by.
They are idiots!

I just searched for South Lamar to get the phone number and felt compelled to write a review because the last one written was so negative. We have been taking our animals to South Lamar for a year now and have no complaints. The staff has always been very friendly and the service has always been great. We never have to wait long for the vet, a plus since our dogs can be a little difficult to handle. They have never pushed unnecessary services on us and as we have four animals there have been plenty of opportunities. We found South Lamar by reading reviews and have been pleased so far.

Cons: Nothing yet

Be very careful with these people. We went there because they were convenient. The vet and tech seemed focused on selling us drugs and services for our cat - who was just coming in for a check-up as we are new in town. They spent very little time with the animal and most of our time was about what services we would buy and writing up invoices. After negotiating down with them to just one drug - we escaped. The prescription they directed us to give our cat (oral metacam) turns out to be not recommended for cats. (Yes, there are overblow scare stories on line, but the vet did not mention any counterindications and we were trying to get him discuss the various drugs he recommended.) I'm glad we didn't listen to them. We'll be finding another vet.

Overall I have always had very positive experiences at South Lamar Animal Hospital. The Vets I have seen have been knowledgeable and understanding and the front desk staff is always friendly and engaging. That said, after what I witnessed today, I am not at all surprised that I see new faces working there every time I come in. We seemed to have walked into a war today, there was a woman yelling and swearing at one of the front desk girls and then she threw a handful of papers at her . It was as if we weren't even there. The girl who was helping us was noticeably shaken up (understandably so) and needed a minute to compose herself after the assault. After reading some of the other reviews on this site I would assume that this woman was the office manager. I am giving the hospital as a whole a good review because this is the only bad experience I have had, but I must say I am thinking twice about the care my pets may be receiving if someone this unprofessional is running the hospital.

We came to use SLAH after having just obscenely bad luck with vets all over Austin, as the proud guardians of four dogs. Our gripes went from the trivial--one called our female dog ""him"" on a consistent basis--to the irritating--another was too afraid of our dog to look in his ears. There were worse problems. One vet refused to do anything about a fast-growing 6"" long wart on our young dog's face but didn't refuse to perform a $800 emergency operation when puppy scratched it, and it became infected, and, we were then told, it might be cancer. We got used to being treated with indifference, even negligence, and feeling railroaded into expensive procedures with fear. Things came to a head when our aging terrier went into ketoacidosis (a consequence of extreme diabetes). Our vet did a bunch of tests which obviously showed problems all over the place -- liver dysfunction, ketones in the urine, glucose about as high as a dog has ever survived--basically a dying dog. The message we got was that we needed to approve about $2500 in advance or they would recommend euthanasia.

DDr. Van Trease has been treating my cats for 12 years. He has been unfailingly committed, thorough, honest, skillful, knowledgeable, reliable, and far beyond competent.
After my cat Pia spent a whole night in an emergency hospital without a diagnosis, it took Dr. Van Trease 20 seconds to notice Pia's broken and bloody claws, probably caused by her digging her nails in and trying to hold on during the impact of a car, and that her other symptoms were probably due to swelling of the brain and liver (which they were). Dr. Van Trease showed me and my step daughter how to read a normal MRI, and how to read Pia's.
Dr. Van Trease's office closes at 6 pm. Two nights in a row, he stayed after hours with me till almost 7 pm, so I could keep Pia comfortable until the emergency night hospital opened.

Once, I was an hour late, and Dr. Van Trease had waited an hour after closing time just to keep our appointment?even though I was the one who was late.

He ordered medication from Arizona because it would be less expensive. He occasionally does things for free, like giving a pain medication for a cat staying overnight.

He always answers all my questions, no matter how long it takes, and he's great about returning calls. He is driven to keep learning, updating technologies, knowledge, and practices.

He approaches each challenging case like a devoted detective would, carrying it with, trying to fit the pieces together.

Dr. Van Trease is a vet hero.

My family has trusted our pets to SLAH for about six years now and we wouldn't take them anywhere else. I live in north Austin and choose to make the drive south instead of switching to a closer clinic, just so that my pets can be in the most comfortable vet environment possible. The staff is knowledgeable and kind and throughout the years they've treated every one of my pets as though they were the most important animal in their facility, and it's that level of care and commitment that our previous vets were lacking. Dr. VanTrease is amiable, understanding, and compassionate, and when he delivered the news that my fourteen-year-old cat may not make it, it was done gently enough that it took some of the sting out of hearing the one thing no pet owner ever wants to hear. Even then, I was still given other options of treatment, just in case there was a way to save/help her outside of euthanasia, though that was the eventual, unavoidable outcome. (As I'm unfamiliar with technical jargon, the explanation was given to me in layman's terms to avoid any misunderstanding and it was very much appreciated.) Katy/Katie was excellent with my cat and treated her as though she cared for her as much as I did and that's such an important quality in any vet technician, considering how stressful those offices can be (especially for cats!). Dr. VanTrease understood my financial situation and did whatever he could to ease the burden by doing as much as possible for as little money as possible. I have never had the impression at any point that any employee of SLAH was in it for the money: They're there because they love what they do. Every single one of them love their patients and respect the patients' owners and oftentimes go out of their way to make the visit as easy and as pleasant as possible. For as long as SLAH remains in business, I will continue to take my cats in for any and every form of treatment, no matter which part of Austin I live in.

This clinic has a lot of good things going for it. The staff does care about animals. The female vet is very good overall with quality, care and running tests. They have slightly dismayed me by forgetting to give me my cats meds or running an extra test when it wasn't needed but they made up for it by apologizing and taking the charge off the bill. Katy the Vet tech is always very kind to my cat and calls her beautiful even tho my cat is old now and does not bath her tail anymore and has black, gland residue. Overall it is a good place-you just have to have in your mind what followup your there for and the meds you need to pick up and keep them on track. Oh and the one female at the front desk with the eyeglasses is a really nice, fun person and makes you feel comfortable arriving and paying. I read the other comments and yes one girl at the front seemed to have some issues with being bitchy but hopefully she'll quit or see the light.

Pros: Katy-the vet tech, female vet

Cons: absentmindedness with running an extra test or forgetting to refill the meds

This is one of the worst vet clinics I have ever seen. Dr. Buck is horrible and frankly ""off his rocker."" I wouldn't let him near my animal ever again. He appears to have raging mood swings with his staff hence why most of them leave and why there is such a high turnaround. I saw him yell at a tech for undercharging me (when he thought the door was shut to the room I was in.)

My experience here was extremely positive (with Dr. Buck?). A homeless cat was run down by a car and I couldn't watch him suffer. I took him there (because my regular vet was closed). Buck was so impressed that I cared so much for a cat that wasn't mine that he performed surgery on him for next to nothing. The cat healed beautifully and is now happily living with my friends!! I'm perplexed by the negativity but my friend can't stand Dr. Buck for his treatment either. Very puzzled. I will go back and do. I recommend this clinic.

We started taking our dog there when we got him, about a year ago. I had never had a pet so I didn't know what to expect when going to the Vet. For a long time it was a enjoyable experience. Dr. Van Trease and his staff were very friendly and seemed to have a thorough knowledge about our pet and a general love for animals. I liked how he explained everything: What they were going to do to our dog on that visit, why it was going to be done, and even advice on how to care for his specific personality. Our dog liked him too he?d always wag his tail whenever he came into the room. That was the case until last week when we met with the other Vet, I forget Her name. Our dog had gotten attacked by this huge dog, he wasn?t badly injured but he did get a bite. Right from the beginning both She and the Tech seemed to think it was our fault. Then, they took our dog in the back for about 10 minutes (They didn?t even tell us what they were going to do to him!). When our dog came back he hid under the bench. He has never done that before! They spent less than 2 minutes talking with us then left. The bill was astounding and I?m still not sure what they did exactly. Now my dog is freaked out about going to the Vet. I?m never going to let Her see my dog again!

There will never be another Dr. Taylor. But I have found Dr.'s Van Trease and Lundenberg to be great vets as well. I've taken my own pets to SLAH for over 20 years and have never been disappointed. I've also been active in the Austin rescue community for ten years, so I have plenty of vets to compare them to. Dr. Van Trease is always thorough. And, in respect for the number of pets we have (7 dogs/6 cats - rescue can come at a large price! ) and the fact that we are in the process of purchasing a new home, he worked very hard recently to shave down a large vet bill for me. So anyone accusing him of being money-hungry will have to debate me - and never argue with a woman with an 80-lb German Shepherd! :)

Pros: Great, thorough Veterinarians

I'v been taking my critters to this vet for years and loved Dr. Taylor. I was sad (and jealous) to see him retire but the new guy is a jack ___. I'm not sure where he came from but I'm sure they don't want him back!! However, the last time I brought my girl in she saw Dr. Lundenberg. She was GREAT. The girl had to have emergency surgery and Dr. Lundenberg was so caring and professional. She had her in surgery and out in no time. I had a back injury at the time and the Doc even helped my load her into my truck. Best advice about this clinic is to not let you dog make eye contact with the new guy, dogs can since evil. See Dr. Lundenburg she's a great vet.

Though sometimes i feel like i'm a lot lighter on cash when i leave there (but i've always felt that way about vet clinics), i really appreciate the attention and time i get when i take my pets here. I dealt with Dr. Taylor at first and he was perfectly fine. Since he's been gone, I've been working with Dr. Van Trease and he is always very thorough and spends as much time with me as i need to understand why i should/should not do something for one of my pets. I also feel like he really does the research before he suggests something to you. Take for example my dogs' teeth: i have 2 chihuahuas and they both have HORRIBLE teeth/breath. They must have them cleaned once a year. So, at our last appointment, i asked Dr. VT if there was anything i could be doing for them between cleanings. Besides brushing, of course, he said that he'd been researching it for a while, and he would now suggest giving them a booster shot twice a year that helps to fight off a large portion of the bacteria that builds up in their mouth. He'd actually been watching the results for a while now and that was the treatment that he had his own dogs on. i agree, he can seem to be a little aloof sometimes, but i think that's just his eccentricity. Not to mention, i always feel like the staff there really takes good care of my babies. They're always loving/hugging on them when i come to pick them up... very sweet... and that makes me feel good about leaving them there.

Wow, I can't believe that last reviewer is talking about the same doctor. I've been using Dr. Buck since he came to S. Lamar Animal hospital and always find him to be competant, caring and honest. I have no issues with him or his staff and will continue to bring our four pets there even after we move.

Dr. Buck had the nerve to pass a printed message on to my Mother that read, in part : ""The only purpose for these glands in your dog is to help a veterinarian make a living."" If that doesn't give you a good idea of how Dr. Buck feels about his chosen vocation, pethaps you deserve to have your beloved pet (mis)treated by the money-loving Dr. Buck. This man is a callous, inconsiderate demon. His focus is on your MONEY, not your pet. Read these reviews, people: how could so many people come to the same conclusion? Disregard the very obviously phoney reviews here giving praise to this monster and save your pet and your pocketbook. STAY AWAY from SOUTH LAMAR ANIMAL HOSPITAL. It's only a matter of time before the Texas authorities revoke his license and shut the place down forever.

Pros: Once a caring Doctor named Mike Taylor ran this office

Cons: Then he sold it to the vile Dr. Buck Van Trease

.

I started going to SLAH back when Dr. Mike was still around and we were so sad when he left. But Dr. Buck VanTrease has been just as wonderful. He takes the best care of animals, but also the pet owners. He always takes the time to explain the why behind everything (if you get a diagram, frame it) and it's obvious that he truly cares about the pets he treats. We have both cats and dogs and he has ALWAYS given equal and compassionate care to both. And as a bonus, the clinic is affordable.

I love Dr. Van Trease and his staff. I've worked with vets and animals all of my life and he is great with animals and has great prices. When my dog ate Tylenol South Lamar veterinary got me in immediately and were very compassionate. I also enjoy going in because the staff does talk with me and don't expect me to sit there in complete silence. Anybody who has anything negative to say about Dr. Van Trease and his staff must have a personal agenda.

I called South Lamar Animal Hospital to inquire about a mobile vet to come to my home to put my 18-year old cat to sleep, and I was so glad to hear that Dr. Van Trease would make the house call. He arrived at my home and could not have been more respectful of our grief, more gently with my cat, Sybil, or more supportive of my decision. He waited with us afterwards until we were all comfortable that it was over before he left. When I'm able, I will get another cat, and Dr. Van Trease will be the only vet I use.

This morning I had to put my 14 year old ""Girl Kitty"" to sleep. When I looked up their telephone number on Citysearch, the reviews caught my eye. I was sad to read of some of the experiences. Dr. V has been treating both of my cats for years and I have to say their care was always wonderful. Never was there a procedure that was recommended that was not needed and the pricing always seemed fair. He and his staff always treated them as if they were little people. In 14 years both of my cats have had multiple surgery's in multiple States for varying aliments. South Lamar is by far the best overall pre and post operative center my cat's have had. When I adopt another animal Dr. Van Trease and staff is who I will look to love and care for my animal. There are a lot of resourses to educate yourself on animal behavior and health related issues, and Dr. V always welcomed my knowledge, and questions. Today is a sad day for me, but I look forward to seeing Van Trease again with my new family member.

Pros: South Lamar was always there for Bijoux and Neica.

Cons: That he couldn't cure cancer or kitty strokes!

My family & I have been clients @ South Lamar for over a decade & have taken all our pets here. Dr. Taylor is as good as they come!!!!! He is unbelievably compassionate & truly loves animals. He is very knowledgeable & understands how expensive pet care can be. He always explains your options & advises you of all the necessary treatments as well as the not so necessary but precautionary treatments. He is very understanding if you don't want or can't afford to spend $ on the extra treatments. And that never seemed to be an issue with me b/c his prices were always the best in town. Dr. Taylor was always in this business for the love of the animals...NOT to get rich! Unfortunately, the time came when Dr. Taylor chose to retire & he brought in Dr. Van Trease. I don't know where this guy got his license because he is the most ignorant, insensitive, rude, uncaring, money hungry salesman I have ever come across in my life. I don't trust him for a second with my dogs & it only took about 5 mins for me to figure that out. For the last year, Dr. Taylor was semi-retired & working there part time. I would specifically request Dr. Taylor & if he wasn't available, I would wait however long it took, just to NOTsee Dr. Van Trease. Now, Dr. Taylor is completely retired & South Lamar Animal Hosp. is going down the toilet thanks to Dr. Van Trease. The prices have gone thru the roof compared to what they were, he got rid of all of Dr. Taylor's staff who were wonderful and brought in a bunch of people like him. It is so sad to see that Dr. Taylor spent his career building such a wonderful place, & in no time at all everything has been destroyed by the guy who calls himself a vet & pet lover. I am in the process of trying to find a new vet & if I'm lucky I will find one who is half as great as Dr. Taylor was. I hope Dr. Taylor enjoys his retirement, but he will be greatly missed. DO NOT TRUST DR. VAN TREASE, ALL HE WANTS IS YOUR MONEY. HE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR PETS!!!

Short and sweet: Dr. Van Trease is great, but rushed. He seems pre occupied every time I go in for Lucy's shots. Yes his office visit is cheep. His front desk staff is incredibly rude, and shows a lack of maturity and caring. I was appalled by the way they were talking while I was waiting for a room. In the end, the front desk staff can make the place appear trashy, but the Dr. is pretty good. Too bad for him, there would probably be more business for him if he knew what was going on in the front.

When we first starting taking our first puppy to S. Lamar Animal Hospital, we saw Dr. Taylor. Taylor was caring, relaxed, spent time to discuss issues, and was very reasonable in helping us care for our dog on a budget. When Taylor retired and we started seeing Van Trease, I was hesitant at first because he is a bit different than Taylor. He seemed to push unnecessary treatments at times, and other times did not. Sometimes he can take the time and is a good listener, other times he is rushed. My experience with the front desk staff has been excellent (with one exception, but I haven't seen her in a while so she may not be there anymore).

My Family has used South Lamar Animal Hopsital for two decades. Each of the owners throughout this time have always been professional and very skilled. They and their staff have always been courteous. Approximately two years ago our pitbull was extremely sick. An after hours Vet told us that he had cancer and their was no hope. I called Dr Taylor, and was referred to Dr Van Trease, his new associate. I promptly received a return call. Upon explaining the problem, Dr Van Trease said he would meet us at the clinic. He was kind and caring and told us not to give up. He referred us to an excellent after hour hospital. Emergency surgery saved his life. It was not cancer, but was life threating. Dr Van Trease left a family function on a Saturday night during one of the worst hail storms we have had to meet us. Thanks to him, we still have our dog. He is now treating my other dog for heartworms, one of the worst illness to strike your animal. He has made the right decisions and always been there for me. He is without doubt the best Vet I have seen. There have been alot of comments regarding price, but his fees are very reasonable. My sister now takes all four of her dogs to him for treatment, in addition to my extended Family. He and his staff are the best. I have other stories of his great treatment, but there is limited space. If you're looking for an excellent Vet who understands your love for your pet and cares, make an appointment.

I been a very, very long time client of this practice, 28 years to be exact. Last month my dog of 14 years passed away. I was blessed that Dr. VanTrease came over to the house to allow his final moments to be with our family in a peaceful and familiar surrounding. Furthermore, my new neighbor took their dog to South Lamar Animal Hospital after hearing about this. His dog was found to have a rare skin disorder that Dr. VanTrease diagnosed quickly and did followup research, and found medication in Canada to help with this. The dog is doing amazingly well thanks to Dr. VanTrease's knowledge and the great staff they have. I would recommend this practice to everyone I meet.

I have been taking my Rottweiler Tyson to Dr. Van Trease for several years. Dr. Van Trease always takes the time to answer any of my questions in detail. I know if I ever have something come up and I need to talk to the doctor they will put him on the phone. Other Doctors will return your call several days later or make you talk to an unqualified front desk worker. Most vet clinics only care about the money, Dr. Van Trease and his staff care about the well being of your pet. I have been to several other doctors in Austin but they did not come close to the servise I recieve at South Lamar Animal Hospital. If you truly love your pets you will do them a favor by visiting Dr. Van Trease.

Dr. Van Trease, and Dr. Ragland are the nicest, most caring vets I have come across in a LONG time! I've been there a lot, and every time I go they take the time to ask questions and do thorough run throughs of what might be wrong with my pets. Some people see this as trying to take money from customers, but I see it as making sure nothing is over looked. I was even allowed to go in the back and visit with my dog who was being kept overnight for treatment. The office visit was under $40 as well, which is almost unheard of in the medical field! Their staff seems to be very busy all the time, but somehow keeps a smile on their faces. They are always very friendly. In every job people have their bad days, but even though some people see this as uncaring..I just see it as busy. I HIGHLY recommend South Lamar Animal Hospital.

Pros: Caring Vets, friendly staff, reasonable price.

Cons: waiting for a room

.

I'll make this short, Dr. VanTrease is very careless when it comes to animals. Money on the other hand is what hes all about. He is very disrespectful to his staff and to the animals. I wish he was half the vet that Dr. Taylor was. I deffinately do NOT recommend taking your animal to Dr. Van Trease. He does not have compassion for animals, only for the money thats in your wallet.

I have been breeding and showing cats for 25 years. Over the years I have dealt with many veterinarians and even Texas A&M vet hospital with one most notable case. In these years I feel I have been able to size up vets. I never met the Dr. Taylor that's mentioned in other reviews but he sounds like a great person. I did deal with Dr. VanTrease. Let me say I read some of the other ""vents"". That's what I call them. One of my cats needed a routine annual exam and vaccinations and the other had a significant medical issue. Dr. VanTrease was very caring and explained everything in complete detail. He really knew his stuff. There was plenty of options presented. He came across as knowledgable (I've seen some not so), and most definitely had my cat's care in mind as we worked through the problem. We have been coming here for 2 years and have had the best medical attention I've seen in my many years of veterinary needs. I hope a few bad reviews don't spoil your thoughts about going to South Lamar Animal Hospital. Take it from someone who seen alot. If they didn't have my pet's best interest in mind, I would have been able to figure that one out. I have also met Dr. Ragland and find her equally caring and knowledgable.

I never even got as far as the office. I was put on hold 5 times and then disconnected on. I called back and was put on hold few more times. I can understand that she must have been busy, but each time she came on the line she did not wait to hear my response, and I had an animal that needed immediate care. When she finally came on the line to see what I needed, and quickly told me there was nothing available that day and hung up on me. Perhaps the animal care at this place is wonderful, but I guess I'll never know. They need to either get this woman some help in the office and give her a little extra coaching or hire someone better able to do the job.

I have been a client th this hospital for years and I am sad to see my favorite doctor, Dr.Taylor, has retired. I tried the new owner in the past but I do not feel comfortable with him. I saw the compassion and care Dr.Taylor provided my pets for years and I don't feel the hospital will be the same. I feel Dr. Vantrese is more interested in my money than the health of my animals. During my pet's exam with Dr.Vantrese, he kept trying to push high priced tests and wanted to perform surgery at that moment. When I went to another vet the next day for a second opinion, we agreed it was nothing more than an upset stomach that my dog had. Sure enough, he was feeling better the next day. I knew something was wrong when a lot of the staff that I had been greeted by for years were no longer there and the atmosphere was never the same after. I will miss the hospital very much.

Dr. Taylor is one of the best (non-salesman) vets I've ever been to. He knows my cats and my crazy cats respond postively to him.

I took my exotic cat there for declaw and spay. I had an excellent experience! The tech Steve was amazing! I have never seen anyone give my cat so much love and attention. After the surgery, I called 4 different times because I had so many questions and was a little paranoid about how she was doing (she had no complications- I'm just over-protective). They were so patient with me! The vet himself got on the phone to answer questions and tell me that if I had any other questions that I should feel free to call back. The customer service from the receptionists is okay, but the techs and vets have all been outstanding (which is what counts to me). I have now switched my dog over to this vet as well (from West Lynn Vet Clinic). Also- the prices at South Lamar seem much more reasonable than other vets.

I'm split on my experience at South Lamar Animal Hospital. I saw Dr. Ragland on my first visit. I found her very caring and sweet and generally seemed concerned about my cat's problems. The nurses seemed a little lost and the receptionist was overwhelmed but overall my first visit was pleasant. My second visit was with Dr. VanTrease. I found him to be unattentive and distracted. He was 20 minutes late for my appointment and just didn't seem focused on what we were discussing. I tried to explain what was going on with my cat and I kept having to repeat myself. I also didn't like the way he talked to his staff outside of the room. Not a great guy. I would not leave my pet with him.

I just moved from another state and was terribly worried that I wouldn't find as kind and concerned a vet as I had. Dr. VanTrease and his staff exceeded my expectations. He was very thourough explaining the problem they found. I never had a vet call in the evening to check on my dog. They were very timely and prompt seeing me. Again, Dr. VanTrease took all the time I needed so I could understand the serious problem my dog had.
I'm happy to report that my boy is doing great and would recommend this veterinary office to any and all.

No problems here. We have been a long time customer of South Lamar Animal Hospital for nearly 12 years. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats. Needless to say we are regular visitors. Dr. VanTrease has been a tremendous addition. Back in Nov. 2004, his surgical help was critical in removing a large tumor in one of our dogs belly. No doubt his quick diagnosis and surgical skill saved her life. Dr. Taylor is just the best too. You won't go wrong trusting your pets as we do to this wonderful veterinary staff.

I'll make this brief- this clinic is poorly staffed with their lack of knowledge and the vet on duty was the pushiest doctor I've ever delt with. I don't trust this place with the care of my cat. After being in the room woth him for 5 minutes and seeing him be rough with my cat, I knew I would never return. Horrible vet!
