.

I am an engineer, temporarily assigned in Bloomington and living in a corporate apartment 500 miles away from my tool box. My wifes van needed some preventive maintenance, but since it was all easy and straightforward, and since she didn't really want to wait around some dingy garage all day with three kids, I suggested that she have the work done at Sears, at the mall.
My wife took our minivan in to get the oil, brake fluid, and transmission oil changed. She called me when they said that she needed front and rear pads and rotors (I changed the front pads two or three months ago) and a 4-wheel alignment, and a tie rod end. Needless to say, I saw a $200 trip turning into a $2000 up-sell and told her to tell them to stop the work, and went over to have a look. The tech said that their guidelines say that they have to recomend changing "scored" rotors since they don't have turning equipment, and the pads ( even though they were nearly new) had to be changed with the rotors. The tie rod end was also fine, so I avoided that $35 part along with the alignment that they said was "required" with the rod change. Needless to say, I told them to get stuffed.
Now here's the point to all of this. The tech wasn't dishonest, he was just following the corporate rulebook which is VERY conservative. It doesn't matter what day you go in, or who you see. Any thing that they tell you that you need, you probably don't. Sears is a fine place to go for tires, but DO NOT let them do anything to your car except what you took it in for. Their definition of necessary is extremely conservative.
