My family has owned a vacation home on the Carolina Coast for over 50 years. Since I was child, we have always eaten at Big Daddy's. The prices really haven't changed much over the last 15-20 years. Years ago, it was expensive. Now, it's no more expensive than anywhere else on the island. Actually, it's more reasonably priced than other places. The food has always been GREAT!! Never overcooked nor undercooked. The service has also been great. No compaints here whatsover. We make a point that when we're at the beach, we always go to Big Daddy's. We just dread the off season while they're closed.

Our table was under the air conditioning vent that had the perpetual condensation drip from its vents. Our waitress brought us water and sweet tea in 40 oz. pitchers - this was the only time we would see them full or with ice. After waiting 15 minutes, she was finally ready to take our orders.

And then we waited?and waited?and waited?

The kids got up to see the fish in the aquarium. And go to the bathroom (it wasn?t very clean, by the way). And to get crackers from the 55 gallon wooden barrel by the salad bar. And we waited and waited some more.

After 45 minutes, our food arrived ? minus the heat and my mixed drink. Just like 2 years earlier, it had cooled, presumably while the entire order was filled. Regardless it was firmly air conditioned.

The waitress returned about 20 minutes after we finished to see if we needed anything. I told her that we needed some more butter, sour cream and ice, because our beverages were warmer than the food. The fried food was over-fried and needed sending back. But seeing as were finished dining, we only needed the check. It came about 15 minutes later.

They included gratuity into the bill with a group that size - I wouldn?t have included any for the service we received. I felt like for the wait (over 1.5 hours at the table WAITING) and the food (over-fried and cold) that they should have been paying us. But to be slapped with a bill that size, it really capped off the evening.

The aesthetics are the only good thing about this poor restaurant ? unfortunately they?re not digestible. Upon entering, it appears as if you?re boarding a ship. And inside everything is very 19th Century sailing ship style, with a nice collection of nautical antiques.

But this is no reason to board the Big Daddy?s ? the outer banks are full of nautical antiques, including a World War Two battleship.

Pros: Been there twice and seated quickly both times.

Cons: Terrible service, over-fried food, cold food, incomplete order, over-priced
