I found Sam through an ad he'd placed online. In a world of similar sounding and similar looking guitar lessons ads, Sam's stood out: enthusiasm! humor! links to his wacky posters! exclamation points!

I came to Sam after being self-taught for a few months, but still very new to playing guitar. Sam is local to Cambridge - about halfway between Central Square and Harvard Square, walkable from either Red Line stop. Being self-taught to start, I wasn't sure what to expect of lessons. I was instantly put at ease when I saw Sam's teaching space: colorfully painted, barnyard-themed (parts of it, at least), equal parts shrine to guitar and a display of Sam's unique personal style. Did I mention Darla the Cow, Sam's six-foot fiberglass pet?

Sam's teaching style is a mix of whimsy, technical mastery and artistry. One moment we could be talking about the mixolydian mode, the next moment talking about the proper way to hold your fingers on the fretboard when playing a certain scale, straight into which types chords sound the most "orcish." He is very easy-going, but don't be fooled - his 40+ years of playing guitar have made him a master. The man knows it all - how to hold it, how to play it, how to care for it, how to make them cry or sing. His love for the stuff is infectious, and makes it very easy to learn. The guy is a ton of fun, and obviously loves sharing the guitar with people. The lesson always flies by.

What I get most out of my time with Sam is not necessarily the technical here's-how-you-do-this type stuff (though there is plenty of that), it's the conversations we'll have through the lesson. It's those off-the-cuff statements and observations that stick with you for a while afterwards - why a certain progression is interesting or unique, or how a certain song has no dead air in it, how a riff changes slightly throughout the song. Those things - clearly the results of a lifetime study of music - are the things I find myself coming back to the most, and are the types of things you can't learn elsewhere. Go see Sam!

The Boston area is crammed with great guitar players, but that doesn't mean they can teach. I'd heard Sam play many times and knew he had the chops, but didn't see the teacher side of him until I started lessons a year and a half ago. I was 60 when I started with him, with 7 or 8 years of half hearted playing up to then. A late comer to music for sure. Sam insisted on getting to the point where we were speaking the same language first, then went with whatever agenda or song I brought to the lesson. No matter what I'm trying to figure out or learn Sam insists on getting there his way: by making me understand what we're up to. He's a patient, but relentless teacher. He Wants you to learn. This guy knows his stuff and can handle any style you want to learn, regardless of your skill level. Funny, quirky guy. Great to hang out with.

I have been taking guitar lessons with Sam Davis for a year, and he is a great teacher. Not only has he taught me a lot, he is also very friendly, funny, and nice. He has taught me all sorts of chords, songs, and music theory. He figures out each individual's needs and customizes the lessons accordingly.

His underground lair is an enchanting setting.

During my lesson, my mom likes to relax on the extremely comfortable couch and listen to Sam and me play music.

If you are looking for an amazing guitar teacher, call Sam Davis.

To all the adult beginners out there, Sam is your guy! I've been taking lessons with him for several months now and find him to be extremely flexible, knowledgeable, and most importantly, patient! I have no musical background, and while I'm sure the many advanced students he teaches provide a more interesting and challenging experience, he'd never let me know it. He truly seems to love teaching, and his enthusiasm helps push me to keep trying things I'd otherwise be unfamiliar, uncomfortable, or flat out frustrated with. I'd recommend him to those just starting or well-versed, he has years of experience both playing and teaching and it really shows.

Sam Davis is a both knowledgeable and personable in his dynamic style of teaching guitar and bass (electric and/or acoustic). He has many years of experience in various genres of music, and his studio is easy to find, inviting, and much decorated.

I have been playing guitar for about ten years and have taken lessons on-and-off throughout that time. I started taking lessons with Sam in the summer of 2011, and within just a few lessons, he was able to fill in gaps in my music theory knowledge and general form. Sam is very thorough in his teaching and even creates his own worksheets and guides to reference when practicing at home.

Sam teaches a wide range of ages, playing styles, and experience levels from children to adults. He caters his lessons to your needs as a musician, whether you're a beginner or active performer. His lesson rates are reasonable, and he has a very flexible schedule. I would definitely recommend Sam Davis for all your guitar/bass needs!

Sam is an amazing guitar teacher and player, plus he??s a pretty cool dude in general. I??ve had lessons with him for almost a year and he has helped me develop as a player. I??m a recent college grad who has messed around with guitar for several years, but never got really far because I didn??t know what I was doing. Sam taught me the stuff I wanted to play, but more importantly he always explained the theory behind everything so that I was learning concepts and techniques instead of just songs. He??s also very good about catering the lesson to your specific needs or interests at the time. I would recommend him to beginners or any experienced player that needs more guidance in their guitar journey.

I highly recommend Sam Davis, guitar/bass teacher. Sam is an incredibly qualified and personable teacher who conducts lessons out of his tidy, colorful, and centrally located apartment in Cambridge and offers very flexible hours. I have been taking acoustic guitar lessons from Sam for almost ten years now. Sam is very interesting and eccentric but unlike many people who fit that description, he is very organized, responsible and reliable. This ability to offer the best of both worlds really sums up why Sam is so special as a person and as a teacher. He is brilliant, but is able to tailor this knowledge to each student's particular level of ability and interest. He is happy to go with the flow of where you want to take your learning or, if you need more guidance, can custom design a course of study for you. Either way, you will leave with either a pre-printed sheet of music or one that Sam has instantly rendered and precisely annotated with all that you have just covered. This makes practice more productive, plus, after you have collected enough of these, you've got a great reference guide for future learning. No matter what your age, skill level or musical interest, do yourself a favor and get in touch with Sam. I have learned tons and have had a really good time doing it.

I have played the guitar for 29 years and taken lessons with Sam for six. He is a creative genius, a skilled and talented teacher, and a complete mensch. I look forward to every session.

I just took my 7-year-old son to him for his first lesson. It was a joy to see.

Taking lessons with Sam has probably been one of the best music decisions I made. Bored with ripping Bob Dylan songs off from the internet and with a love for jazz, I called Sam about six months ago and said "I want to play like Django Reinhardt." He replied, "Yeah, we can do that, I was in a gypsy jazz group once."

Sam is a true master. His experience teaching shines through with every lesson. He has gotten me started and built a great foundation for me while always listening to what I am playing and saying. Never has a lesson felt like a drag and they are always fun! His encouragement has fostered my learn-by-doing attitude. I've grown exponentially over the past six months and it's due to Sam's masterful teaching!

I've been taking acoustic guitar lessons from Sam Davis for the past four years, and I can honestly say it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. When I came in, I "knew" four open-position chords (but I couldn't tell you how to construct any other chords!) and could barely play "Smells Like Teen Spirit,". I definitely couldn't play barre chords without buzzing the strings, and my strumming was about as rhythmic and controlled as a white guy trying to dance. Now I can play and sing at the same time, I actually practice and I know James Taylor and can improvise blues and folk guitar. That's like waking up one day and knowing Kung Fu. TRUE STORY.

Sam doesn't care how much you do or don't know, he always tailors lessons to you. Do you have problems hearing how the music should sound? He's on it. Can't figure out strumming rhythm? He's there playing it with you, always patient, never tiring of your constant and un-improving repetition of "Paint It Black." Are you scared of mistakes? He'll coach you through and build your confidence so that you begin to love messing up so that you learn new things. Do you feel like bringing your accordion to the lesson instead of a guitar? Right on, he'll help you figure out the chord relationships. Are you feeling sad today and can't bear to play arpeggios? He'll find a song to learn that gets you through the lesson AND improves your day.

The posters don't lie, Sam Davis is a mystic musicality guru who inherently knows all the gaps in knowledge, bad habits and failure to practice that stand in the way of the guitar player you are today and the guitar player you want to be.

Sam Davis is not a lesson manager. He's not a slave driver. He's one of the best people you can know, secretly masquerading as the best guitar teacher you'll ever have. You could be 8 or 80, a novice or a virtuoso. Sam Davis is appropriate for all ages.

I can??t agree more with all the 5 star reviews that are given to Sams Guitar lessons! Back in the Netherlands I started learning playing the guitar by doing lessons on the internet. I have tried a lot of websites, some are better than others but no lesson could substitute one of Sams lessons. When I came in Boston I really wanted to get better in playing the guitar so I started searching the internet for ??real? guitar lessons. Luckily I found Sam! After just one single lesson with Sam, I learned more than have ever learned by surfing the internet. I??ve had just a few lessons now and I already feel like I know the guitar much better as an instrument. Sam is really good in explaining everything in a way that you understand it. I??m 23 but I am sure that Sam can also make everything understandable for children. Unfortunately, I??m just in boston for 6 months. In short, if you really want to master the guitar (whatever guitar you want to play), you should really try a lesson with Sam Davis!!!

Taking guitar lessons from Sam is a completely different experience than any other guitar teacher I have ever had. Sam is nowhere near your average guitar instructor teaching out of a back in room in a cheesy music store. He teaches out of his apartment in Cambridge and he has a cow themed decor that really adds to the surreal experience. Sam is a wonderful guitar teacher and his understanding of music and his ability to communicate it is on par with any instruction you would get in a formal music program at a university. He is a bit of a local celebrity and he has the whole cow thing going on but don't let that take away from the fact that you will get really good musical instruction here.

I've been taking lessons with Sam since I started playing the guitar about 3 years ago, so he's my first & only experience with a guitar teacher. Sam has been teaching and performing for eons and it shows. I started in my 40's so I don't have a lot of time to hang around my bedroom with my guitar, blowing off homework.

As you will probably note from other reviews, Sam is a really interesting guy - an hour lesson with him is a unique experience (a very fun one). What impresses me about his teaching style is that it's very focused on infusing theory with the rest of the usual lesson routine, in such a way that you very quickly begin to visualize how music is constructed - the ultimate goal being "informed" improvisation, of course. You don't just learn how to play the guitar - you learn how to appreciate how music is created and arranged. It changes the way you listen to the songs you took for granted.

Where his lessons delve into more hardcore music theory he is really good at giving you a "real time" update into just how what he's talking about translates into music you might have heard and its implications in composition. You might spend a week or two working up a well known song, and then Sam will show you why a certain set of chords were chosen, what would happen if you changed this or that, and other ways of creating the same song to help the "flow".

All this is not to say that Sam doesn't focus on the usual stylistic / technique issues that are so important (which he does) - just that he truly broadens the scope of your lessons to give you the complete package.

Sam is also very sensitive to the need to not overdo any particular subject when teaching. He's good about sensing where your interests are and going there- I guess you could say he's not didactic or regimented about the process. He also teaches to a broad selection of students - little children - middle aged newbies like me - seasoned performers who are looking to add something to their playing - I seem to come across every type of student at the beginning / end of my lessons.

I'd recommend him without hesitation-

My first lesson with Sam was above a guitar store in a tiny room.
I am 60 yr old female and although I knew the basics I had been on a
guitar plateau intermittently for years playing in bursts and then
becoming frustrated. Sam was the first teacher to really inspire me.
We arranged another lesson at his house and told me he would
see me next week and would love me to meet his cow. Well
that perked my interest and indeed the next week I met his
prized cow and all the trimmings.
Three years later I am still coming to lessons and not only look forward
to them but practice as much as I can and actually have developed an avid
passion. Sam is a terrific teacher, patient, funny, and extremely flexible.
He is good with all ages, kids to senior citizens like me. He is a highly talented
musician who is able to convey technique with music theory in a unique, fun and
very patient way. I would say that his true talent is that he loves people and loves
what he does. His students are his family. He is on vacation now and I am missing
my lesson this Friday. In the past I would have rejoiced however now I??m saying,

??when are you coming back??

Music is a new field of knowledge for me, and Sam was a perfect person to introduce me to it. He is everything anyone could imagine an inspiring music instructor to be: informative and cool.

Sam is a passionate player, as well as a very sophisticated theoretician, and great instructor, who knows how to find the individual approach to each student, and make the experience enjoyable and informative at the same time, condensing complex, intricate material to accessible bits in seconds.

You would be taken by his fluency with diverse music styles, from Blues to Jazz to Rock, and knowledge of its history.

I would recommend him to anyone with any levels of experience: beginners to advanced. Sam has magical surprises in his toolbox for everyone!

I've been taking guitar lessons from Sammy for about 2 years now. Having played bass for 25 years, I came in with at least some knowledge of both guitar and more generally music theory; Sammy's been great at tailoring his teaching to build on the knowledge I already had - although after a couple years with him, have realized just how much I don't know. I've seen a little of how he interacts with beginner students - he's great at mixing it up - building confidence through through teaching songs and just relaxing and playing with students, while sneaking a good dose of theory at the same time. If you've been playing for years - he's great at breaking habits and enabling you to see the fretboard in a new light and showing you that there's always something new to learn.

Plus, cows.

Sam is a great guitar teacher who is great at guitar and teaches it in a great fun way. Plus he has a rocking cow show and a hilarious picture of him dressed like a chicken by the freeway. That pictures been on my guitar binder for months, and it??s still hilarious. On scale of one to ten of fun musical ability he??s a twelve. Matt R., 12.

When my son asked to try guitar lessons again, I decided to do some research and luckily found Sam Davis, guitar teacher, extraordinaire. The previous attempt was not successful. Sam has a way with kids, my son is dazzled by him and really looks forward to his lessons . My son enjoys his lessons now and practices regularly without much if any of a reminder and is progressing at learning how to play. Sam has a great approach and wonderful sense of humor. Check him out you will not be disappointed. Gianna R.

I've been taking lessons with Sam for the past three-ish years, and I can ensure that Sam is, to put it simply, a god among guitar teachers. He has infinite knowledge of music, is beyond awesome at guitar playing, and has great taste in music. And more importantly, he puts up with my brother and I for an hour and a half each week. Trust me - that's impressive.

Sam has shown us awesome YouTube clips of people getting mauled by bears, locked us in the student torture closet (complete with lights, sound effects, fake spiders, and severed arms), and thrown forks/pennies at our heads. And at the same time, he's taught us a really impressive amount of guitar and bass.

S.A.M. = Scary-Awesome Musician!!

Sam is great! I've been taking bass lessons from Sam for over a year. I was originally referred by my brother Whitney, who has taken guitar lessons with Sam since 2005. Sam is a great teacher, awesome to play with, and a blast to hang out with. Perfect for all ages, and all skill levels.

An hour never seems like enough, and you'll always leave with a smile on your face, guaranteed!!

Our son has a passion for guitar. He has been strumming guitars, books, brooms, tennis rackets since age 3. He first expressed his desire to take guitar lessons when he was 4. My wife and I then started to ask our friends in Cambridge and Boston, if a guitar teacher would be crazy enough to teach a 4y old. We thought that person did not exist, until we found Sam.

Sam is undoubtedly unique. He is enthusiastic and warm, amazingly patient, funny, extremely knowledgeable. He is very creative in finding ways to teach while maintaining the joy of playing. Our son always looks forward to seeing Sam. Besides, we have the genuine feeling that Sam is happy to teach our son. Sam is a fabulous teacher.

I have been taking bass guitar lessons with Sam Davis for almost a year now. Having had some previous experience taking lessons, i really feel that in a short amount of time not only has my learning rate accelerated but my enthusiasm for playing has increased greatly. Shortly after starting lessons with Sam he connected me to other students, encouraging us to play together which of course was a big confidence boost. He regularly facilitates jam sessions which allows us to practically apply the theory and technique that he imparts during lessons. This class environment has demonstrated his skills in nurturing group collaboration which i think is essential in learning to play with others! He is always encouraging and is clearly attentive to different learning styles. I have on several occasions seen him perform professionally which further attests to his versatility and talent as a performer as well as teacher. I am a full-time dance teacher and continually draw inspiration from his creative and always professional approach to teaching. And of course, his sense of humour, charisma and kindness add to the overall lesson experience. I would happily recommend him and frequently do to anyone interested in taking lessons.

I've been a student of Sam's for a few years now and he's been such a personality since the day I met him. He lives on a hill on Broadway, equidistant from Harvard and Central Square. The first thing to say about Sam is that he knows his stuff. He may not consider himself to be a good guitarist, but he's just being humble. Also, he knows so much about music theory, so he's the perfect guy if you're into that sort of thing. When he writes his master book about the theory of music and everything, you can be proud to know you heard the wisdom firsthand from the guru himself.

He knows a wide variety of songs and will totally roll with whatever works with you. He tailors his lessons to your personality and what makes you happy. Furthermore, he breaks up the monotony of lessons with very lighthearted jokes and will get into a discussion with you about whatever you want. He loves laughing and being just a highly personable guy. It's nearly impossible to hate him.

Also, the dude's got mad connections, so he can get you in touch with people in a whole bunch of fields if you're into that sort of thing. He's such a quirky and crazy man that he'll change your life perspective very quickly. With an awesome cow in his quaint basement lair, you will feel like you are sitting down with a true god in his craft. But don't cross him, or you'll be subjected to the Torture Chamber. And the Torture Chamber is freaky.

Take lessons with this man, and your life will be complete. The eternal path to supreme knowledge will open for you and you will experience an hour of nirvana every week. Thus, Sam Davis is the man.

Getting there: Sam's location on Broadway is fairly easy to get to by T, walking distance from my apartment, or by car (he has guest parking permits).??The space: Sam's pad-cum-studio is a reflection of his personality. Fanciful, eclectic, colorful, and bovine...I don't want to ruin the experience, but I suggest you suspend all disbelief before entering his domain. Oh, and ask him about "the cow." Enjoying surrealism will help you enjoy the space.

??The instruction: I've been a student of Sam's for 7 months now, and it has been going very well. Sam and I discuss where I want to focus my learning effort on, and he tailors our time together to help me achieve my goals. In addition to being an excellent guitarist, he can comfortably teach important musical theories, helping me move from "sort of guitar player" to "guitarist" and "musician."??Sam's style: Sam is really friendly and easy to get along with. Given the nature of a one-on-one teacher-student relationship, this is critical. Though he can definitely be, "fanciful, eclectic, colorful, and bovine," he takes his music very seriously. His style naturally puts you at ease, and makes you feel comfortable with trying some new or difficult concept. Sam is a great teacher, no doubt.

??Logistics: Sam will schedule lessons any day of the week, from roughly 9AM to 9PM. Lessons are $50/hr. with a discount if you book 10 lessons at a time.?

?So why 4 stars, and not 5? There are two reasons:?
1. I've only been a student for 4 months. In time I might revise my rating - you can rate a restaurant on Yelp having been once, but I feel like this is different.
?2. $50 per lesson is a little more than other instructors in the area. However, I believe that in this case you get what you pay for.

??If you're looking for a great guitar instructor, I recommend you talk to Sam and schedule a lesson.

Sam Davis is an excellent teacher with years of experience. You can tell that he loves what he does, and he wants you to love learning about guitar. As a student of his for several years now, I can say that he doesn't shy away from pushing your limits, but always within what your current level is so you never get bored because there is always more to learn.

Sam is not just a great teacher, but an amazing person. He is funny, brilliant, interesting, and just an all-around good guy. You really should take lessons from him. As a bonus, you get to meet Darla.

Sam Davis has been teaching my son for 3 years. I have known him for 30. His wonderful subversive humor pulled him in and the next thing you know he's playing Zappa! What kind of magic is this? Sam Davis is definitely part of our village. He should be part of yours too!

I have been taking guitar lessons from Sam now, for, you know, I am not too sure anymore. I think 3 years maybe? I am not sure how long because it has been a great trip. I consider Sam not only a master of the guitar (both 6 and low-end 4 string varieties), but a great teacher of the instrument and a good friend. Having taken lessons, rather unsuccessfully, over the years, I can say that his teaching style is perfect for all levels and ages. Sam seems to understand what I need as a student, from week to week, and he got it from day one. I have improved greatly over the time I have spent with him, and am constantly amazed by his enthusiasm, patience, and humor. He really is someone I think that is a perfect teacher for almost anyone, and these types of teachers are tough to come by. Easily a 5 star recommendation.

If it weren't for Websters and their pretentious book of definitions, Sam Davis would be the actual definition of excellence. Sam is everything any man, woman, boy, girl, or farm animal could ever want in a music teacher. Sam never ceases to entertain with not only his insane guitar skills (some believe to be given to him by Satan), but his incredible wit. I've taken both guitar and bass lessons with Sam for about 5 years now and my only regret is that i didn't start taking lessons with him sooner. In conclusion; Sam Davis is the best thing to happen to the world of music since the creation of the G chord, and i would trust him with a newborn baby.

I have been taking guitar lessons from Sam Davis for about 7 years. When I first entered his gauntlet of guitar greatness, I was immediately hooked by the wild and wackiness of his home. His great cow Darla greeted me with a wild display of lights and sounds. That was only in the foyer. I entered the lesson room to only be wowed by the stunning arrangement of guitars and basses that lined the wall. I sat down and I started learning.

Sam has a very unique way of teaching. He applies a systematic approach to the guitar, so you are not only learning how to dabble and play songs, but you get an in depth understanding of the instrument. He also encourages an in depth understanding of music theory, which is a breeze to learn with Sam, even with the toughest concepts and principles.

As the lessons passed, I started to realize how my perception of music was changing, I wasn't just hearing songs anymore, but I was hearing chords, key changes, and all of the other things that Sam had been telling me to listen for.

Sam is very personable and a great friend as well as a teacher. He has taught me pretty much everything I know about the guitar and has made me a great musician overall. He challenges me to go deeper into the mystery and wonder that is music, and he pushes me to be a better guitar player. Without Sam, I would have never discovered my love for music.

His pricing is fair judging how much you learn in the hour and how he has refined his craft to the fullest. Sam's house is located on Broadway st in Cambridge, which makes it an easy commute for anyone in the area.

I would highly recommend Sam Davis's services to anyone wanting to learn how to play guitar or bass, whether a beginner, or expert, there is always more to learn when you study with Sam.

As a student for the past five years, I have learned a lot of enriching material from Sam. Sam Davis makes sure that his students understand and apply the material they are taught. He is a patient, understanding yet vigorous teacher with decades of musical experience. Sam teaches Jazz, Rock, Reggae, Blues, Folk and many more genres. Many experienced musicians in Cambridge and Boston that I have played music with agree that Sam Davis is the best guitar teacher in the area.

Sam Davis is for anyone who wants to be fully immersed in music. The music theory that Sam masterfully teaches has allowed me to access my full potential of song writing. Just one hour with Sam is enough to practice for weeks. Sam's lessons are taught in the comfort of his home though a one to one bases. Weather you're someone looking to master music theory or just picking up the old guitar and want to lean how to play a few songs, Sam is a great teacher and I recommend him to anyone willing to learn.

Oh man, Sam Davis is the best of the best. Able to teach the unteachable and make it fun too! Sam's teaching style helps students of all ages learn the basics of music theory and a plethora of hilarious songs from different genres.

He excels at taking a song and breaking it down to your skill level. A Beginner? no problem simple open chords and strumming patterns. Intermediate? That same song with barre chords, hammer on's and pull offs. Advanced player? Lead guitar and finger pickin' and all of that with the same song.

Sam is a wonderful teacher who truly cares about his students and invested in his students. Sometimes I show up for a lesson with a song I'd like to learn and he shows me a song he's been thinking all week about teaching me which is similar to a song we just did before reinforcing the skills I'm working on building instead of just picking songs at random. Always finding ways to connect everything together. He even came to my first live performance at a pub, now what other teacher would do that?

Two years ago I was hopeless, I couldn't play a single song. Now I am still hopeless just kidding.. I have an understanding on how music works, a slew of songs I can play, and when I hear a song on the radio I can hear what it is they are playing, I can anticipate the upcoming notes and chords knowing the formula to rock n' roll and blues. Sam doesn't teach people how to hold an instrument and play like a robot, he gives them the passion to be musicians.
