I own a production company in Los Angeles and one of my Sony PMW-EX1 cameras had a lens focusing issue. I called Sony and they told I could bring it in to their LA service center. So I went down there and they told me there was a $130.00 estimate fee and it would take 7 to 10 days before I would get an estimate. I told them the problem with my camera and they said it sounds like the lens needs to be replaced at a cost of over $2000.00. They told me they don??t do lens repair only replacement. I left because I really needed my camera for a shoot the next week and did not want to pay the high cost of a rental. So I searched the web and called everyone. Then I found these guys and they were a Godsend. Not only could they give me an estimate in 24 hours, they do not charge an estimate fee. So when they called me the next day, they not only could repair my lens at a fraction of what Sony was going to charge they could have it done in two days. When I went to pick up my camera they were so helpful and explained what they did for the repair and get this they give a six month warranty on the repair. All I can say if anyone is using a manufacturer to have repairs done they are losing time and money. THANK YOU TEKMEDIA GROUP.

Tek Media has been late on every deadline, broke our cameras, and is trying to charge us extra for their incompetence. Here are the details:

I teach a high school video program in Burbank, and we have two Canon XL1s's that had some minor problems, such as drifting back focus and a bad firewire port. Searching online for a repair place, I was happy to find that Tek Media Group was very close by. I took the cameras in for a quote, and they came back saying they needed to replace the main board in one camera and that there was a bunch of additional maintenance and cleaning to be done, total price tag about $1500. That was more than we could pay, so I asked for the cameras back so we could use them for filming while we raised the money. They said they needed to "put them back together" and it would take a day or two.

As soon as we got them back and tried turning them on for a weekend shoot, we noticed that one of them was displaying only the red channel, and the other had no picture whatsoever and no communication with the lens. In a panic, we called them to see if they could put them together correctly so our shoot could happen as planned. Their response: "We close in about an hour. That's not really our problem."

Luckily, we were able to scramble, beg, and borrow some other cameras for that weekend. And luckily, we were able to come up with the money for the repairs. I took the cameras back, and they told me they'd be done the next week. After not hearing from them, I called the following Monday to see if they were ready for pickup. They told me the parts came in Thursday and that they were still working on them, and that 3 screws were missing. I said that's fine, I don't need them until Wednesday afternoon. They told me that they should be done by then, and they would call when they were ready. After not hearing from them again, I called Wednesday afternoon to inquire. They told me that they weren't done, and that they were still waiting on some more parts! I was able to substitute a small camera for that afternoon, but I told them that the final deadline was Friday, because we were shooting all weekend. They said they'd put a rush on it, and they would be done by then.

On Friday, I went to pick them up. One of the cameras was done, but the other all of a sudden had "color problems" and the entire CCD prism assembly needed to be replaced, which would be another $700, please.

I told Tek Media Group that neither of the cameras had that problem before we gave them to them, and if they had caused some damage, that perhaps they should cover the cost. Their response was to "check with the technician," who of course denied it and said he only took the interchangeable lens off, and didn't touch the CCD. Which is hard to believe, if it took two days to "put it back together."

To summarize, a high school class has spent $1500 in order to have Tek Media Group take 6 weeks to break one of our cameras and demand $700 more if we want it back.

Tell everyone you know to STAY AWAY from Tek Media Group.
