I am so disappointed with the service I received at Oak Mill Bakery that I thought it was imperative for me to share my experience with others. I don't think I have ever written a bad review before, but Oak Mill Bakery definitely deserves it. My wedding that I was ordering the cake for had around 150 guests. We were introduced to Oak Mill Bakery by our venue who uses them to cater their wedding cakes. Our venue is a reputable hotel on Michigan Avenue downtown Chicago. The hotel helped us set up our cake tasting with the North Avenue Oak Mill Bakery location. Going into the cake tasting we were both very excited, for me it was one of the things I was looking forward to most. Upon arriving at the bakery we were seated at a table to wait until 10 minutes after our appointment was scheduled to talk to the Cake Designer (Bill). When the Cake Designer came over he introduced himself and began showing us all of the different cake designs they had to offer. After we had picked a design style it was finally time to try the cake. Unfortunately there weren't actual cake samples to try. It was 2 very thin slices of cake, each slice had 3 different cake flavors and 2 different fillings. We were surprised by this because before the cake tasting we were asked which cake flavors and fillings we wanted to try. These pre-made samplings didn't even match what we had requested. To make up for this he had small "ketchup cup" style frosting samples for use to put on top of the cakes from the different slices. We tried all the cakes and initially thought they were a bit dry but chalked it up to being the sample pieces that had probably been sitting around for a while. Eventually we narrowed it down to a few different cake types. This was quite hard because the size of the samples was so small it was hard to get a good idea of what we really liked. The Cake Designer was somewhat helpful but definitely didn't go out of his way and didn't have a personable personality. We finally picked one and decided to order a 6" cake (for $35) to confirm that we really liked it. At this point we were a little disappointed but thought the 6" cake would be better.
The following weekend we picked up our 6" cake with much excitement. We were hoping it would be everything we wanted. Unfortunately, it would only disappoint us further. We brought it to our parents' house and tried it immediately. The whole family tried it at the same time and just starred at each other. We were all thinking the same thing, but nobody wanted to be the person to say it. The cake was absolutely terrible; the cake was dry, the buttercream frosting was hard, and the flavors didn't taste all that great together. This last one was our fault, but he could have helped us in the selection process to steer us away from this! I'll also contribute it to not being able to taste the flavors together like we had wanted at the tasting.
The next couple of days we spent contemplating what we should do. I eventually decided to call the bakery up and tell them about our experience to see if we could taste our second favorite combination of cake flavors in another 6" cake. Instead of being apologetic they tried to blame the bad cake on me. "Was it covered in with saran wrap in the refrigerator?" "Did you leave it out for a long time before eating it?" "Maybe you just don't have the right taste for that kind of cake." Despite this I still moved forward with trying to give them another chance to win me over. I asked for another 6" cake but in our second favorite cake flavor. We thought maybe this one would be better since it has buttermilk in it which might keep it moist. At this point he informed us he was going to have to charge me another $35 for the cake, after I had already spent $35 for the last cake that was terrible and I ended up throwing away. He then went on to again tell me that the bad cake wasn't their fault. At this point I had had enough. I asked to speak with the manager so he gave me the number of who to call. When I called the manager she was just as disrespectful. I was appalled.
I can't believe a business could be this rude and unaccommodating to customers. Don't they realize that they are losing $600-$800 because of one small cake? Don't they realize the importance of word of mouth? Don't they care about losing the contract with the hotel? I guess not, because if you ask them they know what I should like better than I do. I highly recommend anyone who values customer service to stay far far away!

YUM YUM YUM!

I am a huge fan and always have an amazing experience when ordering from Oak Mill. From the cupcakes to the all vegan cakes, you can never go wrong. There is also a location in Arlington Heights, which my mom and her friends often visit. About a week or so ago my girlfriend surprised me with the all natural vegan cake..AMAZING... and not one of my party people could tell the difference between that and a regular cake.

You can never go wrong here :)

I have always had great experiences ordering from Oak Mill for special occasions but now with the Wicker Park location so close to my apartment, I have a feeling I will be using them a lot more!

The other day I stopped in before work to grab coffee and treats for a co-worker??s birthday and the response from everyone at work was huge! Everything was devoured down the last crumb! I will definitely be back!!

Wow! This place is great.
I recently threw a bachelorette party for my older sister, and wanted to get her a fun cake to celebrate the occasion. A friend recommended that I try Oak Mill, and they were awesome! They worked with me to help me design the perfect cake for my sister, it turned out absolutely adorable, she loved it, and so did all the other party-goers.
I also love stopping by the Wicker Park location on my way to work to grab a coffee and treat.
Would highly recommend to anyone!
