While I was at work my two year old son pulled a pan of almost boiling water onto his arm and the side of his face causing 2nd degree burns that covered about 2% of his body. My wife was able to render first aid until I got home and we could decide what to do for him. It didn't seem like a very serious burn but since it involved the face I decided to take him to the ER. My wife stayed home with our other two children. I took him to Cardon's for treatment and was appalled at the questions they asked me. It was obvious that they suspected me of child abuse. The hospital social workers asked questions such as how many cars we owned, extended family, if we discipline our children etc. When I told them their line of questioning made me feel uncomfortable and I wanted a lawyer present in order for them to continue, they left and the hospital staff became very unresponsive. I noticed hospital security and then later a police officer had arrived to keep an eye on me. After about 30 mins I finally got the doctor to admit that CPS had been notified and I was being held until they could come interview me. In another hour my attorney showed up and we still had no idea how long we would be held. Meanwhile my 2 year old was very distraught and crying for his mother constantly. About 4 hours after we initially came to the ER three police and two nurses pushed their way into our room. One of the police then sent all of the other nurses and police to the hallway. I guess he realized what a circus they had created. He then interviewed me and apparently believed me. Then one of the other police came in and interviewed me. He seemed to believe my as well. Finally a CPS worker arrived and didn't bother to interview me but just let me know they would be coming to our home soon. One of the police officers then went to our home to interview my wife to see if her account matched up with mine. We checked into the ER around 4pm and checked out around 10pm. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. It is sad to think that when accidents happen to kids parents may be hesitant to take them in because an over reaching hospital staff will get CPS and police involved. The cops actually told me that in my situation they would have done the same thing asking for an attorney present. He said "it's a free country." My response was to tell him that I hadn't been free since 4 O'clock. Cardon's is not a safe place to take your kids if they have been in an accident.
