Every six months, I make the 60 mile drive to O.C. to get my teeth cleaned because my dentist is good. I've only had 1 cavity my entire life, and last year I upgraded to an electric toothbrush at the suggestion of my dentist.

As much as I'd hate to leave my dentist, I decided it was time to stop making that drive to O.C. and give Dr. Nguyen and West Murrieta Dental a try.

Like my last dentist at every check-up, he measured the gaps around my gums. I've never had any gaps more than a 3. With Dr. Nguyen, there were A LOT of 4's and 5's.

After, he explained that based on the condition of my gums I was on the road to gingivitis and that getting a regular cleaning would be merely just "cosmetic" and he wouldn't do that. He explained that I needed deep cleaning in all four quadrants.

The estimate he provided to me was for over $600 representing my co-insurance. This included the deep cleaning, 6 fillings, and a $100 mouth rinse that insurance doesn't cover. The $600 included the mouth rinse and represented my responsibility under my dental insurance. I told him I would have to figure out my budget and politely left.

Knowing that I'm pretty good with my dental check-ups, I was skeptical but also worried. I was also concerned that I'd be using up the 2 visits per year that my insurance allows. So, I called my friend who is a dentist. He agreed to give me a second-opinion. He took x-rays. Nothing. He checked my gums and didn't find any gaps bigger than a 3. Fillings? Not needed. Deep cleaning? No, and he even gave me the regular cleaning I did need.

What also bothered me about Dr. Nguyen was his staff's persistence with getting my social security number. They explained that it was needed to process my claim with my dental insurance. That meant having to go through the inconvenience of calling my dental insurance company to verify if that was true (no, they don't need my SSN to process a claim).

Would I recommend this dentist? No.
