.

After walking or driving by several times, we finally decided to give this place a try last Sunday night. We were the only other couple there and, frankly, were a little worried about the food. We shouldn't have been. It was some of the best Indian we've had in Washington, DC. Those looking for food to burn off their tastebuds might be a bit disappointed, though our waiter said he would could make the food spicier if we wanted it -- so if you want it hot, tell them when ordering. However, I needed a break from the ubiquitous lamb vindaloo and ordered a lamb dish I'd never seen on another menu. We found the layers of flavor for both of our entrees to be complex and delightful. The service was charming, friendly and efficient (without being overly so) though a little more polish may be needed and I'm sure will come with time (it's a new restaurant). While I would critique their marketing (they need better signage and a menu on display to attract walk-ins), I have no complaints about the food or service. As much as I'd like to keep this gem for myself, I strongly believe in supporting good local businesses, and this definitely qualifies. If you like good Indian food and want to try something different from the usual suspects, Cafe of India should be near the top of your list of "next to try" restaurants.

Pros: Excellent food and charming service

Cons: Not closer to my home
