No doubt about it, this is the best place when it comes to authentic Japanese cousin. You'll not find another place like this. The ambience is perfect.

I frequent matoi sushi often and I must say that this is the finest sushi restaurant around. What most people dont realize is that most sushi places offer fish that is not fresh without you even knowing it. I have been looking for fresh

I have been going to Matoi for quiet some now.
I think this is the one of the best quality place in town. I think sushi rolls are superb and fresh. Granted, the place can use more fashionable decor, but I have never had a bad meal

Hands down THE BEST place for sushi in Tampa. I was down in Pompano beach and had sushi at a restaurant down there that my friend said was pretty good. The food there was nowhere near as good as Matoi. I suggest you sit at the sushi bar and have Sam make something for you off of the menu. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. When they have it, the fatty blue fin is extraordinary, as well as the octpus head. I know... sounds weird but it's excellent as well as everything else.

I come to visit my family in Tampa near Westshore and everytime I am in the area I always go out to eat at Matoi Sushi. Sam, I think that is the owner, is always so friendly to me and now knows me by name. He also knows that I love his Dynamite Roll, which is now my favorite item on the sushi menu. I always order sashami when I am there and every time that I have gone the sushi is always fresh and tastes great. I treat my friends out to a dinner at Matoi when I can, and they have come to love the place as much as I do. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a quiet place to eat fresh, tasty sushi in Tampa.

Pros: Very Friendly, Fresh Sushi, and Reasonable Prices

Cons: I don't live close enough to eat more often : (

.

What can I say...I like this place. It's relaxed and not over done so your not paying extra for the "special" decor. The sushi is fresh and I love the rolls. The wait staff is a bit relaxed, but that is one of the things I like about this place to begin with...it's not uptight or super expensive. Sometimes I'm just tired after work and want so good sushi!! This is the perfect place.

Visited Matoi this evening and thought it would be good but it was fantastic!!!!

First off Sam the manager greets you at the sushi bar with a smile and a big hello. He's personable and very friendly. He's more than happy to answer any questions you have.
The sushi was the best I'd ever had! It was fresh, light and really tasty. I had the spicy tuna, salmon skin roll and some tuna. It's the kind of meal that tastes very good and doesn't leave you stuffed. The spicy tuna was not over powering, just right. Sam put a special touch on the salmon skin to make it extra tasty. The maguro (sp) was the best I've ever had.

The atmosphere is warm and friendly. They have tables, booths and plenty of room at the sushi bar. The restaurant is well kept and clean.

If you're in the mood for fantastic sushi Matoi is the place to go! Have no doubt

Try it . You'll go back.

Pros: Fantastic sushi !! Friendly service from everyone.

Cons: I don't live in Tampa.

3 Years ago I discovered Matoi with some friends while working in the Tampa area. That night was AMAZING!!! It was among the best Sushi I have ever had. And the staff was as top notch as the food. It made such an impression I went back before I left Florida. The following year I went back hoping to have some of that sushi again only to learn that there was a fire and they were closed to rebuild.

So, that brings me to this year. I went last night. They were open for business. I found a place at the sushi bar and ordered. And again, it was AMAZING. The second order was also AMAZING. So much so I got lost in the bliss of what I was eating and left without a very important item.

I called today hoping that someone might have found it. I talked with Sam and he searched and searched. no luck. So we hung up. A few minutes later I get a call back. HE FOUND IT!!! And was able to make arrangements to ship to me (since I had already left town).

This is one instance where the service went really far beyond the food...and the food was (again) AMAZING!!! And I imagine many people have had experiences like mine at Matoi.

Bottom line. I WILL BE BACK. Hopefully soon!!!

I Was in Tampa area after an appoinment. We were going to go into perkins but decided not to. Went to Matoi instead. I got to say the sushi here is great. I loved it. The staff was very friendly and very informative when we asked questions. The place is very nice and quiet . You would never know that you were on a busy road. I would definetly recommend this restaurant. I live in Spring Hill and i plan to make the trip for lunch often. Keep up the good. I can see why you have been there for so long.

I'm a sushi fanatic and have tried almost every single sushi restaurant in Tampa. Not only are the rolls excellent, but sashimi is always fresh. I've recently become a regular customer of Matoi's and I'm pleased with the food every single time. Korean food is also very tasty and traditional. This is my favorite sushi place in Tampa so far.

went on valentines day with my girlfriend. there was a nice atmosphere, we ended up in a booth in the corner. the food was good, though it cost about as much as other sushi places, so not exactly cheap. the only things we got were sushi rolls, so can't comment on the rest of the food. the special roll (bottom of the menu, description is "surprise") was actually pretty good, though i imagine it changes from time to time. i would go back again, though probably not too often simply because of the price.

My wife and I found this place by accident and decided to try it. First time we noticed a dank smell in the place but we were hungry so we ordered. The sushi and rolls are very good, but we've had better elsewhere for the same $$$. We've hit this place a few more times since then and noticed the customer service getting progressively worse. The guy doing all the waiting seems to be more interested in checking out the girls there. Last time we waited and waited for our drinks while others that came in after us got served their drinks - doesn't take much to just fill a glass with coke so it was unacceptable. So we got our drinks and food at the same time. Then we noticed when my wife's order was ready before mine, he set it down unattended on a regular table for a good 8 mins while customers are entering and leaving, walking right past the food. The guy there needs to keep his mind focused on serving the customers and off the chicks. He even ignored us when we called him to ask for our drinks, then he acted like he forgot or that we didnt' order drinks in the first place. The sushi is good, and the place is definitely worth a visit but service sucks.

I don't know how this restaurant got rated 5 stars. At best, I would give it 2 stars... AT BEST!

I was curious if I was the only one that had this opinion, so I browsed a few of the other reviews. It seems that there are people who loved the place, and others that did not like it at all. I fall into the latter category. I was unimpressed by the service and the sushi.

I won't be going back.

I heard from a coworker that Matoi had been around for many many years... so I dropped in one night with my husband to check it out. All I can say is that both my husband and I were not one bit impressed by the food, the service, or the place! First of all, parking is limited and situated right on a busy highway; second, the service (or lack of) is under par; most importantly, the sushi is... sloppy (for the lack of a better word). I am a sucker for sushi, so I have tried a lot of places around town, and Matoi is not a place that I will be returning to. It could be that I went on a "bad" night. But, I definitely don't think I would want to return to a place that might be inconsistent in the quality of food and/or service. I would recommend Yoko's. It's close to Matoi in distance, but far ahead in the quality & taste!

I go to Matoi at least once a week for lunch. Friendly, fast service puts this place at the top of my list. Liked it before the fire put them out of commission for awhile, but now that they're back, they are better than ever.

The atmosphere is very clean (new), comfortable, and it's a great place whether you're in the mood for great sushi or Korean comfort foods like Bulgogi or Dolsot Bibimbap. Kimchi is good here too.

I've been going to this Sushi Restaurant since I was in the womb. I go at least every two weeks, well not since the fire but still. Every time I walk in it's instant calm and sometimes yes the waitresses can be a little impatient but it mostly cause their trying so hard to get everybody's orders out ASAP. The sushi has never disappointed and I love their Volcano roll and Miso soup. I've tried other places while they are closed but every time I find myself comparing and Matoi has always won. Even their Unsweet tea is better. I've had my last 3 birthday parties there and the staff even bought me drinks for my 21st. I make sure I take every friend to this place and will continue to do so.

I heard very sad story on my number one favorite restaurant...
MATOI SUSHI..
caught on fire and closed for while...
Like in Oriental Preverb,
"when a place caught on fire, that place will go well on business"
I wish this place go well and overcome this critical moment and COME BACK~!
MATOI SUSHI, you are still my FIVE STAR Restaurant.
I miss you so much,
hopefully everything goes well and see you soon~!!!
I Still give you TWO THUMBS UP....

I've tried alot of sushi restaurants in the bay area and this is one of the best. There is a great selection of specialty rolls if you are up for something out of the ordinary. They also have korean bbq with all the little side dishes you would come to find at a sit down korean family dinner. My friends usually have large parties there and the staff and owner have always been very accomodating. I found out recently that they will be closed for renovations for a few months so they will be missed. I look forward to getting my volcano and SOJ roll when they reopen! They are rolls you have to try when you go there.

My wife and I really wanted to like this place. We ordered a couple rolls each and none of them were any better than average. I go raw and the wife likes cooked. Sorry to bust anyones bubble, but maybe we went on a bad day. We were not impressed. Try Yoko's.. it was awesome!

Four years ago my best friend took me to Matoi, since then, I have never gone anywhere else for sushi.
The servers are wonderful, the ladies never fail to have my hot tea and onion soup in front of me within mere moments of me sitting down.
The chefs are all fun and interesting to talk to, learn from and joke with. I have my favorites and they know I will be ordering them, but each visit I try something new and they know what i have tried or haven't tried yet, and they know which ones i liked best, so they make recommendations based on my personal history with them. That, to me, says more than anything else. The entire staff takes the time to get to know their customers.
Let's not forget the food itself. Excellent. Fresh. With portions that sometimes I even have trouble finishing.
I mainly go for the sushi, but every once in while, I branch out to some of the other dishes, and have yet to find something disappointing.
I recommend Matoi to every one I talk to about sushi. I have even told exec chefs from other sushi bars to go to Matoi's to see what sushi should be.
When I moved back to Tampa, I made sure Matoi Sushi was within a 5 minute drive.

Eric and I have been going to Matois for approximately 1yr. Since we started going there has never been a time where we have not been greeted with a warm welcoming hello and fast service.
Since our first visit we have come to love eating there and go at least 2x's a week sometimes 3.
Now when we arrive our drinks are arriving at the sushi bar at the same time or right before us. That is what I call service. The servers and the sushi chefs are attentive to our needs, know our likes and dislikes and are always willing to explain things to us if we have any questions.
The food is outstanding. The sushi is very fresh and delicious and the presentation is inviting.
I would recommend anyone who has never tried sushi to make Matois your place to start. You will be sold as we were and keep coming back for more.

Food is great, Servers are very kind and specially, the owner,
Mr Lim was very very friendly that makes me very special person.
Mr. Lim, the owner, tolds me they were there for 20 years.
Anybody who goes there and have a meal there will know
how they can success in this economy condition.

Every time I go down there,
I always wasting my time to find a nice restaurant which I really don't like it.
On May 25th that Memorial Weekend,
I went to Matoi Sushi restaurant and I loooooo~~~ve that place.
This is THE SUSHI Place I'd like to go to all the time.
Food is great, Servers are very kind and specially, the owner,
Mr Lim was very very friendly that makes me very special person.
Mr. Lim, the owner, tolds me they were there for 20 years.
Anybody who goes there and have a meal there will know
how they can success in this economy condition.
Absolutely, TWO THUMBS UP~!!!!!

Out of the many years I've lived in the tampa bay area I've been to countless sushi restaurants. Sure a lot of them were good, but Matoi Sushi has without a doubt the best sushi in town. The quality of their fish is outstanding and very creative, as if that weren't enough their service is amazing! They try as hard as they can to cater to your needs, and not once have they failed to meet my expectations. Not only are their staff members friendly and comforting but the environment of the restaurant also keeps me comfortable. Setting sushi aside, they also have a korean menu if you aren't a fan of sushi which is also delicious. They have anything from Terryaki to grilled delights, such as Gal Bi and Chicken. The best part? Everything is all very generously priced!

How do you know when you've came to a nice restaurant?? It's not just by what you eat and how good it is. A lot of it, for me, has to do with the service they provide. It's a very important thing to keep your customers satisfied, which Sam (the owner and chef) has never failed to do. I met him while dining in his restaurant and he is a swell guy! He not only creates it into a perfect and creative dish but he takes the time to talk to his customers and joke with them, he's hilarious! Not only is he hilarious but he's a genius, his specials taste amazing! The Bucs roll, Volcano roll, Steve's special, and of course for all the couples..The Love Boat Special! How does he come up with these ideas? I wouldn't know! The most important of all important facts about this restaurant....Their fish is probably the most fresh I've had at any restaurant! Don't believe me? Go try it for yourself, I highly recommend Matoi Sushi Restaurant!

I have business in Tampa Bay that requires me to travel to the area several times a year from up north. We stumbled upon Matoi by complete accident one day several years ago, I will never look for another Sushi restaurant in Tampa again, there's no need this place is that good. The servers are friendly and the sushi is outstanding. Even though I only visit the restaurant 2-3 times per year I feel as though I am a regular. Do yourself a favor and get a sushi boat, you won't be disappointed. Keep up the good work!!

Let the chef choose, take some friends and order a boat. The variety and quality are both top notch!

I would highly recommend Matoi Sushi. I have been a frequent customer since I was 14 years old. Back in the days of 'Sam Oh Jung'. Every year since I started going there to eat I have returned for my birthday as well as my mother's, brother's and little sister's. The food is absolutely amazing and the service is about 88% dead-on good service. The only problems I have ever had were with newer servers, but that's to be expected. My favorite rolls: VOLCANO - Absolutely too much of a roll, but well worth it. You would pay the same price for half the size anywhere else. Beautifully displayed and there's never a piece left on the table. SOJ - This roll has my favorite orange sauce on it and is the favorite of my 6 year old's picks. Something that needs to be tried atleast once. I guarantee you will be hooked! SAM OH JUNG SPECIAL ROLL - A very tasty roll filled with crab salad mixture topped with Salmon and avocado. Sweet taste and the fish always tastes like it is caught outside of the back door. Another must have is the ginger salad. I cannot live without them! Matoi is a quiet, cozy and relaxing atmosphere and I hope all who read this give it a try...it may turn into your favorite place too!

Good and Fresh Sushi... presentation not that good and service is mediocre.

The first waiter that approach us was tapping in the table with a pen as we were making the selection, it seemed to be that she was running out of patience or time. I don't like to feel like they are doing to me a favor when I am eating in their restaurant.

The Sushi was good... perfect Nigiri size, fresh and wide variety of fish.

If you are looking for a fresh and safe Sushi meal and you don't mind the service. It is a great option.

This was the best sushi and service that I have experienced in the Tampa area! We have visited and been constant customers for many of the sushi restaurants in the Annapolis area. The atmosphere at Matoi, the service and the sushi was phenominal. I would highly recommend going to Matoi.

Pros: Great service, great sushi and the kimshi was fabulous.

Cons: Can't think of any!

I'll agree with a previous poster that Matoi's has the BEST Volcano roll. It is unlike any other volcano roll you'll get anywhere else. I'm sure there is any nutritional value has been removed from it but it is a decandant indulgence.

Unfortunately, I'll agree with another poster that the service can be slow and abrasive (depending on who is serving you, that is/not naming anyone particular [cough, cough]).

I still recommend Matoi's, however, cause I do believe the food is that good. It's always fresh and never sub-par.

We visit Tampa several times a year and never go without a visit to Matoi Sushi. The service is excellent, the waitstaff is very helpful with suggestions and specials. Their spider rolls are amazing, their sashimi is incredibly good and good value and there is such variety. We always order too much! We often see celebrities there, but the staff treats us just as famously! Love it!

My husband and I eat at Matoi every Friday. We have eaten at Matoi at least once a week for the past two years and have never gotten a bad meal. The sushi cannot be beat. I highly recommend the Volcano roll. It is a must try! I have eaten at every other sushi bar in town and none of them even come close to the quailty of Matoi's. The sushi chefs and staff know us on a first name basis and that is very special to us. I recommend this restaurant to ever sushi lover out there.

I go back and forth on this place. I've been there many times over a 4 years. I like Yoko's and Ichiban better. If you're near RayJay and want it quick and simple - try it. Good points: Korean food (Kim Chi etc) on the menu. The inside is beautiful. Aquariums. Cute menus and take-homes that you can purchase (coffee mugs, pint glasses etc) Bad points: The rolls seem skimpy and the overcompensate just by using more rice. The wait staff never lets you know what you have or what's coming. The Spicy Yellowtail we just had was HORRIBLE. The worst I've ever had - it was super fishy. The rolls also usually seem poorly put together and fall apart as you pick them up. But I've also had a few great meals there. Very hit and miss. I haven't had a great meal there in a long time.

I've been driving almost an hour to Matoi Sushi since it was SOJ & now my secret is out... I love this place! You have to check out the Special's Board, including the Bucs Roll (the sauces on top are so good, you don't dare dip it in soy sauce) & my personal favorite,OECE (bbq'd eel w/ cream cheese served tempura. The cream cheese just melts in your mouth. It's almost like dessert,it's so rich!) The chef's are very personable. They'll make sushi not on the menu or currently not on special. The servers work together to ensure you're taken care of. I paid $20 for a discount card & was given my own pair of chopstix with a case that has my name plate on it! The card even gets me 10% off the bill. Oh, and don't be surprised if you see some Buc's players in there.
