My cat was exhibiting the following symptoms: excessive thirst, excessive urination, weight loss, decreased appetite (very unusual), and occasional vomiting. I was new to NJ so I had to do some research before choosing a new vet. I brought my cat to West Caldwell Animal Hospital after reading good reviews online. After experiencing the service and care at West Caldwell Animal Hospital, I will not be bringing my cat back to their office. One positive comment is that the the vet gave my cat what seemed to be a thorough physical examination. Also, my cat, while nervous, was calm while being examined (in my presence). The doctor and assistant took my cat in another room for blood work and an urinalysis. They brought her back to me and told me that I needed to collect a urine sample on my own. Right then, I thought something was strange because I have never had a vet ask me to collect a urine sample on my own. My thoughts were a) they were not skilled enough to draw a urine sample or b) they were looking to make an extra buck. I collected a urine sample on my own using the small container of plastic litter that they gave me for $10. After my cat's urine sample came back showing a plethora of bacteria, the stand-in doctor asked me if there was any possibility of contamination. I told her that I followed the instructions of the assistant when gathering the sample. They had provided me with a very small container (the size of a typical prescription medicine bottle) and told me to clear out of the box overnight. They told me to lock her in an enclosed room (which I knew would only stress my poor kitty). I was also told that it was okay if there was a little litter in the box. What I was not told, was that the box needed to be thoroughly cleaned. I would have done this, (being that I am a serious cleaner), but the instructions were vague. *One important thing to note is that there were not even any instructions on the receipt. Instructions are important! I explained to the stand-in doctor that there was a possibility of contamination and I requested that they draw her urine directly from her bladder at no charge due to the lack of clear instruction. They agreed to do it since the instructions were unclear. They had no problem gathering the sample the second time around. This was not a surprise. After wards, when speaking to the receptionist, she explained that they almost always put the homeowners in charge of gathering urine samples. After hearing this information, I felt that my suspicion of them looking to make an extra buck was confirmed. After getting results back showing early kidney disease, I was given very little instruction on how to care for my cat. They told me to feed her Hill's Science K/D (prescription food). I did research of my own online and found that it is very important to keep cats with renal failure hydrated. Most importantly, there are supplements and medicines that help cats with kidney failure and prolong their lives. Azodyl, for instance, reduces toxin build-up. This was recommended to me by my old vet in PA who has not seen my cat in 2 years. I also found that there are phosphate binders which reduce the absorption of phosphate (which normally advances the disease). On a side note, prior to my visit at West Caldwell Animal Hospital, I had my cat's medical records transferred from her old vet, and while they mentioned reviewing her records, West Caldwell Animal Hospital did not mention the fact that she only had one kidney. While having one kidney does not cause kidney failure, it is an important factor, because she has less disease fighting power. They must have overlooked this when reviewing her records. All in all, my experience at West Caldwell Animal Hospital was telling enough for me to know not to go back there. If anyone has a good vet recommendation, please let me know!

I want to Thank Dr. Mock and her Drs. as well as office staff for being the KIND< CARING & Compassionate people that they are. We have had a relationship with 3 dogs for over 20 years. I would go no where else or recommend no one better then these fine group of people. They literally treat your pets as if they were children. May the Lord continue to bless you with your talent and compassion.

The doctors and staff at WCAH are fantastic! I've been bringing my pets to Dr. Mock and her staff for nearly 20 years and they're top drawer! They're real pet lovers - you can tell by the way they talk to the animals, and the outstanding care they give to them. Whether it's a regular checkup or an emergency situation, WCAH is the place to bring your pet.

I've taken a few of my pets to West Caldwell for emergency visits and the vets and assistants were extremely courteous and professional. I always felt my pet was in good hands - they were always very thorough and willing to answer all the questions I had.

This place is wonderful! I brought my dog here when she hurt her leg and our usual vet was already closed. They were amazing and although it was an emergency appointment and they did lots of tests, it was cheaper than our typical vet would have been. They did a great job and the facility is very nice. I would recommend it any day.

We have used this facility twice for an emergency for our dogs. I would highly recommend this facility. The one visit we had our dog needed emergency surgery. They were able to save her life but it was touch and go for a few days. We truly felt the care that she received at this facility saved her life. It is expensive but for an emergency this is a great hospital.
