My first real time in a salon in over 5 years. (I shave my head.) And it was a perfect from start to finish. I walk in and they are playing the Pixies. That's a plus. Then the product they use I can't find in NYC stores: Kevin Murphy.

shannon colored my hair today. she is amazing. she took the VERY dark brown hair color out of my hair and turned it back into the super light beige blonde that i'm used to. i'm super impressed. at the nape of my neck, where it had been colored almost black, there are what looks like strawberry blonde lowlights now, but not brassy or orange looking at all. it's amazing what she was able to accomplish in one sitting. also, she didn't seem to dry it out or damage it.

I decided to do a search for cool salons in the city for a haircut. It's been a few months and I desperately needed one. Once I read that this is a salon in London as well, I had to try it. Boy am I glad I did. Shannon was amazing. She spent a lot of time asking me exactly what I wanted and did exactly what I asked!! I have been getting compliments all day at work. (Every one noticed). I will definitely be back. I am so sick of salons that cut your hair straight boring across...I love all the choppiness..super sexy. Did I mention the complimentary wine.. Loved it!!

I came in for the first time yesterday and saw Marissa. She gave me a single process and a cut and I had an amazing time. It's so friendly and cool in there and if you book on-line with Lifebooker, you can get a 20% discount!

I will be back!

I went to Pimps and Pinups for the first time this week and I am really impressed. The gentleman who greated me was sweet and funny. My stylist Angelina was awesome. She and I really talked about what I wanted and she totally delivered. I really dig my cut and she did it in a way that I can wear it in a bunch of different styles. She was a real doll with a great artistic eye. I highly recommend her.

Booked a double process with Shannon, asking to have my brown hair dyed red. Gave examples like Amy Adams, Gillian Anderson, Christina Hendricks, etc., but asked for something that would still look rich, natural and flattering to my dark coloring. Shannon pressured me to pick a swatch, even though I told her I wasn't comfortable with my own judgment and wanted her to pick one for me. We "settled" on a very deep red that I was unsure of, especially when Shannon said that she was planning to single process and add lowlights (I should have objected, but didn't, mea culpa on that).

The color I came out with was closer to purple than red, and extremely dark and flat. I told her that it wasn't what I wanted, and she said, literally, "You're the one who picked the swatch, you silly girl!" After I complained, she agreed to put a copper toner in. I reluctantly agreed that it was closer to what I'd wanted, and since I'd been there for four hours and had plans, I left, unhappy... Later, I realized that not only was the color nothing like I'd asked for, but it wasn't even of a salon quality: it was uneven, much browner in some places than in others. I called to complain and the manager, John, promptly agreed to book me for a free redo. I told him at the time that I would probably need a double process to fix it, which he didn't comment on...

...Until I got to the salon for my redo with Karen, at which point, John suddenly claimed that he had no idea I wanted a double process, that I had been changing my mind constantly, that it was my fault the color was the way it was, that it actually was exactly what I had asked for in the first place. He told me I would have to pay $70 and come back another day to have it fixed. After arguing with him for half an hour, pointing out that I 1) had always said "double process," 2) had never once changed my mind about my look, and 3) had been called names by the stylist, he agreed to rebook me for free.

On Monday, I saw Karen. To her credit, she spent several hours with me, not knowing if I would give her any money for it (which I did -- more, in fact, than the salon wanted to charge me), and did attempt to fix my hair to something I actually wanted. However, there were two problems: first, like Shannon and John, she was very passive-aggressive when asked even the simplest questions. For example, I asked her if my hair would turn out darker on the bottom than on top. She was very cool when she told me that it wouldn't, and would be even all over. In fact, it is now significantly darker on the bottom (much closer to the color I want, whereas the top is a bright, Cheeto-like orange!).

So, obviously, the second problem is that no one seems to know how to dye hair there. I've dyed my hair for years and never had as much a color disparity as I do between the top and the bottom. I suspect the problem is actually that she lost track of time while bleaching my roots, busy talking to the receptionist (Katie, who is very, very nice and deserves every credit in the world).

I'll also add that none of the problems with my hair itself are just my opinion, although John and Karen both challenged me at every turn, acting like I was just making up every problem. After the first job, people told me my hair looked "purple" and like I had gotten "magenta highlights." The second time, someone came up to me and asked if it was supposed to be so much darker on the bottom. So this isn't in my imagination!

I'm sorry for the obscene length of this review, but this is literally the worst service I have ever had from a salon or anything else -- so bad that I made an account just to write about it! I clearly will not be using this place again, and I will be discouraging all of my friends away from it as well. In the meantime, hopefully the top of my head fades to a more natural color before I lose it and run off to Duane Reade.

Pros: Free beer/wine/ tea; OK cuts/styles; very sweet receptionist

Cons: Bad attitude from stylists and manager alike; 2 bad dye jobs

Pimps & Pinups rock!!! I don't remember getting so many compliments about my hair...Ever!
I've had my hair done at Fekkai, Vidal Sassoon & many other expensive salons in the city, but have never been so happy with the results! Salon looks fantastic, prices are fair plus they are open til 10PM :)

This place makes you feel like a movie star. And not as intimidating as it may seem since it looks to chic. Everyone was super friendly and I felt very comfortable there. Plus my hair looks absolutely amazing. Michelle is the BEST!!!! Go there! See her! :D

I recently moved to the Lower East side and of course spotted this salon right on my corner. You really can't miss it. I went in last week and saw Michelle for a cut and highlights. She did an amazing job! My hair is so blonde now I feel like I'm stopping traffic! The one thing that really impressed me is that she took the time to give me tips and teach me how to style my hair myself. My hair now looks salon good everyday! Everyone was very friendly and funny. Also the music was great!

what a great salon! the staff and stylist could not be more friendly, the place is chic and comfortable, but most importantly, Kenny is very talented. He listened to what I wanted and needed, and made sure he understood my lifestyle and what I expected from the cut. I could not be more happy with my haircut and will definitely be going back to Pimps and Pinups and Kenny!

I had heard great things about this salon both from friends in London and New York. I decided to make an appointment in the new salon in the LES and was thrilled I did. Jackie gave me the best hair cut I have ever had and really took time with me and gave me the exact style i asked for. The price was reasonable too.

Jackie is great, the salon is amazing, I will definately be back!!!!

I had walked passed (or should I say, stumbled) across Pimps many times on nights out in the Lower East and thought I'd give them a go. I had such a great time! The staff are very cool but do not take themselves too seriously. British Manager John, even joked (I think) about how he's spent his whole life trying to become a scenester, but to no avail!

Jackie, my stylist, listen to what I wanted and gave me a great cut. The music was some great indie and a got a great cup of English tea John the manager had got for Christmas. As I said the guys are all very hip but it has not gone to their heads. I can not wait for my next visit.

Am disappointed as I called up to get a rough estimation of the cost for a few highlights and a little trim.
They quoted around $80-$120 mark depending on length and color.
I honestly only got a little trim and no more than a few foils. $185 later (plus $30 tip) I wasn't such a happy camper.
The atmosphere wasn't cosy enough - it was all about being "cool" or looking "cool" as an image in the exterior/interior of the salon rather than being focused on the clients comfort.
I don't think I'll go back - but was initially keen to try it.

Unless you're 'cool', seek 'cool', or have a wallet to pay for 'cool' - I'd think again. And, if you do go - make sure you get the price UPFRONT!

I have been going to Michelle at the last salon she worked at for quite some time. I'd follow her anywhere. But this place is just amazing. The lighting in there isn't that harsh salon lighting... you sit in front of those lighted mirrors and really just feel beautiful. The staff all look really cool and stylish but there is absolutely no ego in this place at all. Everyone is friendly and funny. The complimentary wine helps. :) I highly recommend Michelle's updo's thought... She is truely an artist!

One of my friends had a retro style wedding last week and i was really stuck for ideas. I went from hair salon to hair salon trying to get inspiration but all i got was tried, old lady style hair ups (I'm 27 not 47 for god sake, stylists of midtown!) But after a night out I spotted Pimps & Pinups in the lower east. I checked out their uber cool website and booked in for a up do with one of their stylists Michelle.
On the day i went for a classic style beehive. I loved it and it gave my outfit an interesting spin.

I will be back for sure!

I thought id try out Pimps' after reading about it in the NY post. I was a bit nervous as i haven't been to the hair dressers for a while.

But Kenny, my stylist, was the nicest guy i have ever met. He listened to what i wanted and offered some cool ideas for me. I loved my cut (and so did my girlfriend!)

For $70 dollars I thought i was getting away with a real deal. The music and atmos was amazing, and i got a free glass of some great red wine.

I will be back soon!
