Pravda

★★★★☆
Pravda is an underground Caviar Bar that prides itself in serving the best Cocktails and Martinis alongside Russian inspired food. Modelled on a subterranean Russian speak-easy, one can almost imagine the smoke filled rooms of yesteryear. The small bar upstairs is one of New York's little secrets, and is a perfect place to start an evening of debauchery. Although you might have a hard time picking your poison: Pravda offers over 70 different Vodkas, including 10 house infused flavored Vodkas.

Pros: Russian Tea, Chocolate Cake, Cocktails, Vodka

Cons: Monday :(

My friends and I made reservations at Pravda for my best friends 21st Birthday Party. We had a group of about 15 people. The waiter was very patient with us as some people arrived late and she was very attentive. The drinks were delicious, but I'm not sure if $20 a cocktail was worth it. When we got the bill we were surprised that the cocktails were much more expensive than the menu had listed, but regarless we enjoyed ourselves.
They allowed us to put our friends birhtday cake in their kitcken and after they brought it out and let her blow-out the candles, they then took it back and brought us each a piece.
Other than the pricey drinks, 2 thumbs up.

Perfect classy place to go for cocktails. Different drinks with the finest vodka. Great bartenders that server up the right mix to perfection. Fantastic location. Classsy, upscale decor without the pretentious attitude.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I had heard so much about Pravda from friends and how great the drinks were, so I was excited to go. I had never been before. I can not stress enough how absolutely rude every hostess was in there. After being booted out of TWO tables (for "VIP"s), we decided to leave. The hostess, who was giving us the stink eye all night, and circling our table like an ugly vulture, actually made us want to leave- even though we weren't even done with our drinks. We were five very nice paying customers.. I just couldn't believe it!
So when we were literally WALKING OUT THE DOOR, she pushed me to the wall and said "you need to let people through"... there was no where for me to go! My friend did not have kind words, needless to say. I hope that the owner reconsiders his choices in his help. It's a recession, and I am sure there are other out of work actresses that are prettier and nicer.

I love this place and keep going back even though the bartenders and staff aren't the friendliest because I love the martinis. This bar has a nice ambience, 2 levels, better for a small group unless you get a table. The martinis are tasty and strong. They are all voldka and infused with flavors. The Vladimir is fig flavored vodka, sounds strange but is delicious.

If you are with more than one person don?t bother going here!!!!! I went with a group of 10 people to hang out and it was like being in homeroom! You are NOT ALLOWED TO STAND ANYWHERE, BUT THE BAR. I had a few friends seated at a table who were scolded for not ordering drinks from the waitress, but after 20 minutes no one even came over to take our drink orders! You can not stand anywhere, but at the bar and if you even slightly move into any seating area in the place, this beastly women comes out and completely flips out that you have to stand at the bar! I think her entire job was to yell at people all night. We are all adults there is no reason to be hostile and flat out RUDE to people. The bar was pretty crowded and because there is no where else to go. We were separated from our friends the whole night and reamed out through out the night for standing anywhere, but the bar! It is a complete shame because the place is cozy, they have tons of interesting flavored vodkas and the bartenders were friendly. When we went to say goodbye to our seated friends we were AGAIN reprimanded that there was no standing anywhere, but the bar area. If you didn?t like being told what to do as a kid, this is NOT the spot for you!

This bar stinks. The waitresses were rude, slow and un-accommodating. I have had drinks in applebees restaurants with more class and atmosphere. Just because you are in the basement of an old NYC building does not mean that you have atmosphere. Blasting bad music while serving overpriced and disappointingly tasteless drinks is not atmosphere. Do not be fooled by any hype, this place gets two thumbs down.

Cons: No space, not nice, not convenient, not cool

Really bad y'all, really bad.

Waited around for atleast 15 minutes before I able to get the dirty blonde waitress's attention. After waiting another 15 minutes with no drinks we decided to leave... I told this to said waitress, and she litterally turned her nose in the air without saying anything, like in some strange movie.

The attitude with this primadonna server as well as the total D-bag dreadlocked manager was that of unwarrented pretentious superiority. The guy came up to where we were sitting--where the hostess sat us!--and said in a very deuchy way: "You can't sit at that table, it's reserved." The place was not even close to being full.

NOT WORTH THE ATTITUDE... Plenty of other places in the city. If you liked Pravda, however, perhaps you will also like Rainbow Room! Ha.

Pros: It's pretty enough--kind of like the oyster bar under Grand Central...

Cons: Our dirty blonde servers and the dreadlock manager... and the smell of urine

.

Such a great spot , great drinks, great staff...but one HUGE complaint which will cause me to go elsewhere next time I'm in that area. The entire place reeks of urine. We left wtih headaches from the stench. It's 2 floors and the smell managed to cosume both. If the bathrooms are kept in such poor conditions, I wonder how the kitchens are....its a shame, b/c the place has potential.

I visit Pravda once in a while and I have always liked it. But this vodka called Karlsson's from Sweden was not like any other vodka I have ever tasted! Usually I'm not even a big vodkatini fan, but that has certainly changed! Wow.. Thank you!

Was here this past sat9 and its a pretty good place. I had the chocolate martini which was jus alright. What I really loved was their infused vodka shots, the fig is really yummy!! Highly recommended. Also, the mini burgers and fries are pretty good as well. The decor and the ambiance of the place is not too bad, kinda russian feeling w low lights and reddish paint job on the walls. It can get rather crowded and loud though and the waitresses are hard to get once they bring ur order but it?s a cool place and I would def go back at least to try all the other flavored shots!

Been there a couple of times, most recently about a month ago. Nice chill place, the decor is very retro. The drinks are great, and expense reflects the location. But it can get really busy at times and becomes a drag when you have to wait 20 minutes to get a drink or can't get a table cause it's so crowded.

Pravda has a great ambiance and serves some good specialty cocktails, though they're a bit expensive. It's a fun place to grab a drink, but best avoided late-night when it becomes quite a scene and overcrowding can make it hard to even get to the bar for a refill.

Love the low ceilings and the cavernous setting. Drinks are not spectacular but good enough. Though for $13 a pop they should be spectacular..good martinis, good caprioska (but not better then let's say Yuca Bar which has them for $5 at happy hour and $8 otherwise). Vodka infusions are decent (best is chile horseradish) but not nearly as good as in the Russian Vodka Room. Overall the place wins with ambience and a good looking clientele. It also has some good appetizers (caviar eggs, ham croquettes) and a surprisingly great warm chocolate cake with sour cherry compote ($8).

The Russian vibe in here is undeniable and the lounge is filled with some of the trendiest people alive. Ambiance aside, the basement lounge sports some of the most interesting vodka mixes available. Be sure to bring plenty of $$ for your date or group night out.

I never thought I'd long for the days when the bouncers enfored an impossible velvet rope, but this place could actually benefit from turning a few people away. It's so crowded you can't even move, and a space that could have been fantastically intimate has become a noisehall where you can't hear what anyone is saying and you're always in fear the drunk guy crammed next to you is going to spill his drink on your shoes.
On the bright side, though, they do have a large selection of martinis and they are good.

By far, Pravda makes some of the best drinks in the city. Everything was made to perfection. Pravda has a great atmosphere as well. I got there on a crowded night, but was still seated at a table promptly. The bar got very crowded, which made it difficult to order a drink when I wasn't sitting at the table. This is a great place to start the night.

No, no it's not a bad thing. Nice 1920s decorum. Old mirrors with peeling silver great cocktails and vodkas. Great snacks. An atmosphere that many swankiest places lack. This place has a vibe and a soul. Your mileage may vary due to a fact that this is not a big secret anymore and has not been for years. Back in 2001 when we first found it by accident it was like finding a gem in a city full of mediocre lounges. Patrons were quite different then, but by all means go and give this place a try. If you lucky you going to find some of its soul still there. Something to be said about the place that kept quality of drinks and food throughout the years.

the waitress was really insistent, pushing a mysterious polish vodka on us but couldn't say what it was she like about it. In the end of an uncomfortable experience (7 people around a booth made for 4 - even though other tables were available) they OVERBILLED US $50.00! lame.

Behind the red velvet curtain is a vodka lover's dream..posh, leather chairs invite you to sip a cocktail and enjoy conversation with your date, as well as people-watch in a dimly-lit, cavern-like atmosphere. For $12 I felt the rush of vodka flavored with a huge yummy slice of fresh ginger. The wait staff had that reserved, European demeanor, all the more emphasized by their black attire; cool in a good way. Will return when I have a few bucks to burn.

I really like this place. While I discovered it supposedly after it's highday I absolutely adore it. It's nicely dark, the drinks are great, and it just feels like a private spot for you and your friends. The drinks are amazing and their selection of vodkas is outstanding. The food is great too. The caviar is great and prepared very aesthetically pleasing.

The host would not take my name, and let me sit with my friends. There were about 20 of us, but we only needed a few people to sit. One of my friends was in from out of town for my birthday, and is battling a fatal disease. He is weak, and was having difficulty standing. After apprising the host of the situation, he failed to let us sit at the emply tables, even for just a few minutes. Unfortunately, the delicious martinis are secondary when I think about the host, who left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Although I never get this angry, I was near tears on my birthday, and will never again pay 11 dollars for a martini to be treated like such crap.

We recently went for a birthday celebration, about 15 of us. We ordered plenty of drinks, lots of caviar, but someone brought in cupcakes for the birthday girl, and were promptly told "if you eat that cupcake I will charge everyone at the table $5." It was a typically non-busy tuesday. We had a bill well over $1000 but couldnt eat our cupcake thanks to the hostess and rude waitress, each of whome were real see you next tuesdays. Horribly unpleasant workers lost our business going forward.

We went last night for a friend's birthday. There were 15 of us ordering a ton of expensive drinks and caviar. Someone brought cupcakes for the birthday girl. The hostess/manager/wanna be cop came running over and said "if you eat that cupcake I will charge everyone at the table $5." It was a Tues. night, not very busy -- our bill was enormous -- give me a break -- it's a cupcake. They were incredibly mean and rude (as was our waitress -- who was sure to add a 20% tip to the bill). I have been to places just as trendy that allowed us to have a cake for a birthday. They lost 15 repeat customers last night.

This place is not Russian. Rather, it is a nice collection of many well know Russian clichés. There's vodka, Caviar, and things named after Russian czars. If you want an authentic Russian experience, look elsewhere, but this is certainly a place to go to if you want to have a good time. The atmosphere is very comfortable. The desserts are delicious. The martini was amazing. My friends and I had a good time. The price was expensive ($10 per drink and for most desserts, and a lot for caviar), but I will keep coming back.

I've been visiting Pravda off and on for close to three years. It's a great place to chill out with friends during the week with a good strong drink. One of the best deals in the city for a plain old vodka martini. Most of them are $7.50, and you get the whole shaker. Service has always been friendly and competent. It's best when it's not very crowded and you can get a table. Not a great place to have to stand around with a vodka martini. There's still a line occasionally to get in on weekends.

had a terrific time here on a night out with a friend -- even though we arrived on an evening where there was a private party downstairs, the hostess was very accomodating and we were seated shortly thereafter. great vodka selection, excellent oyster appetizer. we left Pravda to go elsewhere for dinner, but then came back for the thirty year tawny and a warm chocolate cake. the staff recognized us on re-entry, and treated us with a pleasant familiarity, seating us immediately. the place was alive with energy and conversation. the one sour note: coat check girl lost my umbrella (on a stormy night) and then argued with me about it. but the rest of the experience was well worth it.

had a terrific time here on a night out with a friend -- even though we arrived on an evening where there was a private party downstairs, the hostess was very accomodating and we were seated shortly thereafter. great vodka selection, excellent oyster appetizer. we left Pravda to go elsewhere for dinner, but then came back for the thirty year tawny and a warm chocolate cake. the staff recognized us on re-entry, and treated us with a pleasant familiarity, seating us immediately. the place was alive with energy and conversation. the one sour note: coat check girl lost my umbrella (on a stormy night) and then argued with me about it. but the rest of the experience was well worth it.

Pros: great service, vodka selection, lots of energy

Cons: coat check hell

Great place for a date, especially on a weeknight. Martinis are delicious. The crowd is young, it will be busy, but not overcrowded.

It was a little too trendy - not a place for a casual drink with friends. Seems they took communism a little too far - was told we would be spoken to in regards to getting a new seat?? I was seated between the stairs and the kitchen - had everyone stepping on my feet.

I've been going to Pravda for a few years, and one of its highlights is the great selection of martinis. The interior is lovely, understated, and not overdone. The upstairs bar is a great area for more intimate conversation with friends. Overall, the atmosphere, music, and warmth of the space give the place a lively atmosphere. Although I would not descirbe it as a trendy hot spot, I'd call Pravda a seasonless wise choice to start or end your night out.

My friends and I frequent Pravda for their huge selection of delicious martinis and great apetizers. The atmosphere is smooth and not at all touristy. We'll certainly continue to go again and again....
