Portions were way too small for the price. Service was slow.

When I received my credit card bill, I noticed that the restaurant overcharged me. I called them to have the extra money refunded and instead they charged my card AGAIN. I called to have that fixed and was told to call back the next day.

That is not the way to do business! When I threatened to call the Better Business Bureau all of a sudden they could refund my money.

AVOID this place! There are so many better Italian restaurants in the area.

This is truly the best prifixed lunch in all of New York! For $13.00 You get a three course meal with deliciously large portions and a vast menu to choose from. They also have a wonderful wine selection. Just don't come if you are looking for lunch in a hurry. The service was a bit on the slow side.

I have eaten here a number of times now. The decor is nice, clean, uncluttered. Service is good. And the pasta dishes are very good. We've had the taglierini with lamb ragu, the fetuccini with wild mushroom sauce and white truffle oil, and the fusilli with applewood smoked bacon and braised radicchio. All were excellent.

Their wines are also quite good, as was the arugula and goat cheese salad with mango.

This is now one of my standard go-to places for Italian food in the Midtown West area....

My boyfriend and I go to Roberto Passon on a regular basis, and are never dissapointed! The food is always excellent, usually with a few specials that intrigue us. Yes, it is a small restaurant, and is usually packed to the gills, but that is a part of its charm. We enjoy the great food, italian wine list, and a waitstaff that will bring us something when we need it and leave us alone otherwise!

This is not a quality restaurant, With so many restaurants in the city. The pumpkin ravoli tasted like it was from a can. The bread was not fresh and the hummus tasted sour. They come around with stale bread and provide everyone with hummus and a tomato spread. The appetizers were overpriced and not of good quality. The rabbit was about as rubbery as you can get. The water was warm, they don't even put ice in the water. The bartender can't make a drink- the mojito was absolutely nasty. The staff is rude. With so many restaurants in the city; this 'restaurant' seems to set itself as being one of the worst all-around.

One of the worst places I have ever encountered. For one, the seating arrangement in the place is awful. They crowd in as many tables as they can, and the waiters/busboys constantly bump into you. The waitress never comes over to ask how your food is. You can wait forever for someone to take away your food. Someone ordered the rabbit--it was dried out. The liver for the appetizer was not too great. The arugula salad with mango was all arugla, and one piece of crusty goat cheese. The list can go on. The drinks have no alcohol in them. The waitress spills my drink on me, apologizes, doesn't offer me a new drink, gets all over my dress, doesn't offer to pay a dry cleaning bill, doesn't replace the drink, and the $10 drink was on the bill. Never again and I told all my friends not to go to this place. Beware! Oh, and the bread was stale.

The hostesses didn't even seem to want to be there -- why have more than one person standing around?

The wait staff was friendly but slow.

The bread and appetizers were poor.

They charge for refills of iced tea -- which is basically criminal in New York. Even Ciprianis or Lugers give you refills on iced tea, amazing.

The bill was off, and not corrected. This place has some growing pains to figure out and it can be quite good I think -- it's just not right now.

I'd like to agree with Serafino, Bravo! I am Italian but american born, and I can tell you that Roberto's food is very close to what you will eat in Italy. It's unfortunate that alot of people go to Italian restaurants looking for puddles of tomato sauce, and mountains of cheese - people please, this is NOT ITALIAN FOOD. Also, Roberto is one of the nicest guys you will meet, and his staff are very pleasant. It's a very busy and small place, and sometimes people get stressed out, but I've never, ever been treated poorly here. I also happen to know ,that there have been some former employees who have been writing horrible reviews to try and ruin his reputation, but whoever you are, dont' worry, you will never succeed!

Where do I begin, the hostess never smiled and there were two of them that looked upset that we came through the door even thou we had a reservation. The waiter came by twice with no water after I ask three different people for some. They served stale bread - you couldn't even break it open it was rockhard. Our entree came out so fast we didn't even sip our wine yet. And the entrees were horrible. Don't get me wrong I love garlic but when the chop up a whole clove of it and there is more butter and olive oil than pasta in my dish I have a major problem with that. They served a "half" lobster that was completely dry and tasteless. I couldn't even take one bite of it. My friend had the chicken wrapped with prosciutto and mozzerella it was so dry and salty. Nothing tasted fresh or new it covered up by garlic and salt......
I will never go back!

Well, i was born and raised in italy, in the north. Clearly who write about bad food is probably used to little italy "american italian food" type of places. I cannot find any other explanation, because the food here is as close as you can be of eating in italy. I come here whenever i can, i don't live nearby. I tried also they other places, and the food is good everywhere Roberto cooks. Seriously people, get a grip!! the service may not be a 4 star, but sure if you wait 10 minutes fo the table it means that the restaurant is popular and should be happy to wait. Or you can go just around the corner and eat at the italian place that it's always empty...

I go out to eat every night and trust me, passon is one of the top place in the city if you compare price/quality.

just wanted to poit out that. if you want good service go to il mulino where they charge you 250$ per person and you have to wait 30 minutes even with reservatio.

This is NYC and not Boise.....

We went to Roberto Passon on a Sunday night, we had a reservation for 6.30 and the manager told us that the table wasn't ready even though we were right on time. She asked us to wait but they don't even have space to wait so we had to stay at the door for 10 min. While we were waiting the manager was acting as if nothing was going on. In fact she looked very unprofessional and lost. When she finally took us to our tiny table we saw that they put an extra chair for us which was very uncomfortable because we were actually on everybody's way. The food was good but the management was totally horrible. I'll never go back and i'll make sure that none of my friends go there either.

Such terrible service! The management is completely dysfunctional. Our waiter seemingly forgot our order and we watched as several groups were seated and served before we even got our drinks. We were never served several items we ordered. The waiter went to the kitchen promising to bring back another omelet to replace the one that had come without the cheese; she never returned. When we asked to speak to the manager he ducked behind the counter and sent over a hapless server. The food is pretty good, but it's really not worth the lousy treatment.

Walked in w/o reservation and was given a table immediately. Waiter was fantastic, gave great descriptions of the specials, poured wine and water timely, asked us several times how everything was and genuinely cared. We had no expectations and were very pleased with our meal. We'll be visiting again.

We almost didn't go to this restaurant based on the bad service reviews it got, but it was so convenient to the theater, we decided to give it a try. We went in mid-August, and it was just fine. The setting is very nice, the huge windows were so clear we had a debate about whether they were open or closed. The service was absolutely fine. We were in and out in an hour, which was just what we needed. The food was perfectly good...average to above average. One thing we appreciated: the portions were just the right size. They weren't so huge that you feel compelled to take home the leftovers and then sit with them at your feet in the theater. For 3 people with no wine, the dinner was about $60, which was perfectly reasonable.
It's certainly worth a try!

my finace and i came to roberto passon on a thursday night when we were visiting the city from philadelphia. we were seated very quickly by the window, which was nice. the decor is nice- i really enjoyed the picture windows. the service was fast and our waiter was friendly enough. we had the calamari as an appetizer, which i would pass on next time. it wasn't bad, but it wasn't fabulous. i had tortellini stuffed with goat cheese, which was wonderful. my fiance had the carbonara, which was not so great. the pancetta tasted more like a slice of smoked ham from a deli rather than pancetta, which left the dish needing salt. the wine menu was averagely priced. our bill was about $70, which i would consider average.

we arrived around 6pm without reservations, but the restaurant filled up shortly after that. overall, i would say that roberto passon was good, not great. i would probably come back. but there are so many restaurants in hell's kitchen that you might want to "shop around" before making a decision.

An overall dissapointment. I have been here several times (live in the area) with a few friends and service and food have been very inconsistent. They are constantly changing all the staff which tells you something isn't right. Also, they have been in construction for months which has left the place not so good to not so complete. The maitre de has a nasty attitude, and the hostess was yelling at the bus boy right next to us. She sat down two people when the table wasnt ready, so the bus boy came running over to set up the table asap, and she said hurry and dont give me an attitude so loud that we heard it as well as the people standing waiting for their table to be set up. I must say that their scorpinio and carpachio are fabulous every time I've went...used to love their carbonara until tonight when it was so salty that it was inedible.

Have eaten here many times- the food is fabulous - especially the risotto and the fegatini. Have had excellent service most of the time. The Saturday night maitre (male) was not very customer oriented when we were refused our usual table - which by the way was vacant and had been requested in advance of arriving. This was not a problem in the past with other greeters ( usually women). Too bad since we love the food, but like most consumers would like to be treated well since we are the ones paying the bill. By the way, specials are fabulous but usually a lot more pricy than similar items on the menu. They should let the diners know of the pricing at the time of ordering if possible.

As someone who's spent a considerable amount of time in Italy, I can only say that Roberto Passon is the closest thing I've managed to find to the food that I ate there. I've never at any time experienced the unfortunate events that have been mentioned in several recent reviews. The service has been impeccable-the host / hostess at the front door lovely and welcoming. Every restaurant has it's share of off moments, but clearly some of the writers here seem to have some sort of Vendetta against Passon. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if some of them were either written by the same person, or several people who were encouraged to do it. What a shame that people are going to read this, and get scared off by it! Oh, to the reviewer who made the cheap shot by saying the "Rude Smelly Host"- maybe what you smelled was your own body odor. He happens to be an aquaintance of mine, and I can assure everyone that he's neither rude or smelly.

I was here with my wife on a saturday night and it was the worst ever. We were sitted by the door, for our bad luck we had to listen to loud arguments between the host manager and two waiters, but we didnt say anything. The waiter probably didnt put the order in and we waited 20 minutes for our salads and no apologies were offered by the waiter. The food was ok after i had to send it back because it was cold. I would not recommend this place for the lack of respect while people are having dinner and lack of proper service!!

My girlfriends and I dined here recently and as seems to be the norm, you never know what you're going to get at Roberto! Some nights the service is amiable, some nights it's abhorrent. Regarding lunch, it's the same scenario. Inconsistency is rampant here and the service is a bit...strange...to say the least. The staff is a bit too touchy-feely (I witnessed a maitre d' actually groping one of the servers and use some terms better left in the privacy of one's home) and I have heard (on several occasions) loud arguments and felt uncomfortable. However, the food is AMAZING and a great value. Usually, service is prompt but there's something amiss. I don't like to be stared at in a menacing way while I'm eating nor do I like to hear loud arguments and inappropriate language. It's a shame because the place is really great and I've spotted many Broadway movers and shakers dining here. I recommend the place albeit with a STRONG caveat!
As far as food is concerned, I have yet to come across disappointment. The risotto is to DIE for as is the lamb shank. Desserts are artfully displayed and scrumptious.

My boyfriend and I came upon this restaurant on a friday night. Alhough the place is small we were seated immediately and our waiter was very charming and attentive. The noise level was as high as any other restaurant in the city but perhaps it is more noticeable because the space is rather small. I was seated on a long bench where I was almost eating on top of a couple whose first date conversations I had the displeasure of listening to for the rest of the meal. However, there is something charming about the ambience of the restaurant and I think it would lose that charm if it were any larger. The food was wonderful- I had the gnocchi which was some of the best that I have had anywhere. My boyfriend ate the linguini with clams- also rich and delicious. The wine list was good and the dessert (mmm... tiramisu) was excellent. This is not a restaurant that I would frequent but I may return with a group for a pleasant evening out.

I got the pumkin ravioli and it tasted like they used store bought won ton wraps and wrapped up some flavorless pumkin guts. This is a seasonal dish - that all the season will pass before I ever order this from there menu. My husband got the lamb shank and this was average at best.... I may try them again with hopeful thoughts because of there location, but I can not recommend them at this time.

This is one of my favorite spots in the theatre/Hell's Kitchen area. Wonderful food each time I come to the restaurant. Try the homemade pastas with fresh and unusual sauces. The homemade pasta with veal and rosemary sauce is wonderful. And the fettucini with wild mushroom flavored with truffle oil is amazing. Do try the appetiser - warm portobello mushroom with tomato and whipped sheep cheese on a bed of arugula. The wine list could be better but the food is so flavorful and delicious that I keep returning again and again.

My date and I were first time walk-ins on a recent night and were seated at the corner table at the window. This is a charming, unassuming, low-key room. As others may have said, seating is close and the noise level is high. We sat for some time before I asked a busboy if we could order drinks. We sat some more. I noticed a number of the waiters casually chatting at the back of the room. We waited some more. Finally someone arrived and took our drink order, which took some more time to arrive. After that a waiter arrived with menus and told us about the specials. It was a long time to wait, although it gave my date and I a chance to talk. A lot. We each had the beet salad, I had the filet mignon and she had the red snapper. The food was all very good (but uninspired)and the waiter did seem to become a bit more attentive as the evening wore on. We finished with tiramisu (not bad) and cappucinos. The bill came to $104. If I was in the area again, in a pinch, and had a lot of free time I would certainly go back.

I went there on sunday night with bunch of my friend to celerbrate my friend's birthdsay. let me tell you we had a fantastic time. The food was great and the service was wonderful. I didn't like how my monk fish came out but the waiter didn't say another word he was gladly changed to other dish very fast so I could eat with my frineds. all my friends are Italian and they think It was very good food as well. you know how picky they are about food and wine. I would love to go there again. very soon. you should too.

I liked the food and would want to eat it again. Unfortunately, I'll never go back on a weekend. The space is cramped and simply not pleasant to sit in. I like to have some element of relaxation when I dine, and this place was just not comfortable. Then there's the incredible volume of noise, which probably has more to do with the small, box-shaped dining room packed with people than the crowd who happened to be there on that particular night. I don't mind a nosier room if I'm with a group and am comfortable, but this place is too small and compacted to be good for groups. I'd go back on a night when nobody was there. Food is good. Portions aren't big, however.

What A Major Diappointment!!! I understand noise level in most NY restaurants can be loud - but this was unbearable. It seems they cater to "large" theatre groups (in a relatively small space). If you are unfortunate to be there on a night when they do, your dining experience is up for grabs in terms of noise, service and food preparation. Their swordfish in shallot sauce tasted like burnt onions in a beef consome base. Bad news, if you are avoiding beef. They seem seduced by their new success - giving up quality dining for packing them in. If you are couple or a foursome, forget it - unless you love shouting and receiveing service as it comes your way. You'll have far more peace of mind if you grab a sandwich and munch it outside the theatre. Shame on this restauranteur for subjecting his customers to this dining experience.

Cons: Loud and Crowded, Poor Service, Poorly managed

I ate here last night, and must say that the food was incredible. Each course that was brought out was better than the one before! The value also can not be beat-- the most expensive entree is $20, and that's a good sized steak (which my boyfriend had and raved about). Desserts were out of this world, as was the white asparagus appetizer... I'll definitely be back, with all of my friends!!

We've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. Fish is done to perfection and the pastas are incredible. The staff has always been friendly and professional. You can't beat the value for your money either!

Appetizers were good (shrimp and portobello mushroom). Steak medium is Steak WELL DONE--food took long enough to not send back. Grilled Chicken was good. Deserts: Chocolate cake good, DO NOT HAVE THE "APPLE PIE"--terrible. Coffee old and burnt tasting. Service was adequate--but never asked how entrees were. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT MC/VISA--Manager was extremely rude-saw him yell at waitress and was flip about the Visa issue. Not recommended.

The best Italian food in Hell's Kitchen! Especially for this price! A very welcome addition to a neighborhood that is filled with mediocre Italian restaurants. Service is not always great, but overall, tje waiters are so nice and personal, you forgive them. However, be warned that space is very tight and noise level can rise quite high. Still, I've been back there many times and like the "ambiente" - the food has always been "molto bene".

One of the best in NYC and not just for the price. Food is outstanding and the prices are so, so reasonable. If you do a play you must make reservations for Roberto Passon afterwards. Try the Grouper, it's simply great! No exceptions.

Fabulous neighborhood restaurant. Outstanding food and menu selection. Service is great and personable. An excellent value for a neighborhood that tends to have overpriced or touristy restaurants. We have been there a few times now - salads, pastas, and fish dishes are great!!! I esspecially love the proscuitto and white asparagus appetizer. I cannot complain about desserts either, very tasty!

I've been a regular since they opened a few months ago and I have always had an excellent experience. Food is a good value overall, there are numerous interesting dishes on the menu that you don't see on typical menus. For example appetizers include white asparagus with egg + prosciutto, octopus, and chicken livers with pears. I'm also a fan of the pastas, entrees, and desserts and would describe them all, but am limited to 150 words.
Biggest negative by far is the layout of the restaurant. It seems they have tried to squeeze the maximum number of tables into the restaurant.
