This is my first time writing a comment. I have a mini poodles and had tried virtually every groomer in the City when I found May at The Salty Paw. My dogs finally stopped "putting the brakes on" for grooming day, which told me right away that something was different. The haircut was perfect -- just what I asked for--I highly recommend May Groomer not only for their amazing haircuts but for the whole experience. You can always tell the people who really love animals .The shop is clean Plus the grooming stations are right out in the open so you can actually watch the animals getting their haircuts-it's just like a hair salon. The friendly, hard-working staff is also impressive and really nice to the dogs.

I have a Shisu dog that is very naughty. I brought her to this grooming place about two weeks ago and was very impressed by the service they provided us there. I usually very busy working and doesn't have much time to brush my dog's hair. As a result, her hair always matted. When I brought her there, I asked the head groomer, May, whether we should rematted her hair or should we just shave it. She suggested that we should cut them because rematted the dog's hair is usually painful for the dog. Also, shaving her hair off might help she feels more comfortable. Even though my dog might look ugly, I chose to shaved her hair off regarding May's advice. All the staff here treated my dog gently with a lot of cares. There's no hitting, slapping like the other grooming places. It turn out to be awesome! My dog loves it and she just running around like a happy kid. . I also think it is cool to have a shorted-hair dog sometimes. The most impressive service here was the offering of free brush out on my next visit. May said that I could bring my Shisu in next month and she will teach me the correct way to brush her hair with less time consuming. I really, really appreciated her help. Although the grooming place is kind of small, but I really like the way they set things up in their shop. The warm color of the wall and music that they put on, I just love it! My dos is happy and seems to love her new haircut. I would recommend dog lovers to go to this place 'cause it won't disappointed you in any way

My dog Bear is very friendly, but does not like to be left at grooming spots at all. But since we started taking her to The Salty Paw she loves going to get groomed. We have had her trimmed and puppy cut there and they couldn't be more thorough with the consultation before she gets groomed. And every time I pick her up she is happy and looks amazing! Perfectly happy every time!!! They have a tremendous staff that is so friendly and helpful with everything as well.
My puppy means everything to my husband and I and I recommend The Salty Paw to anyone who wants the best for their dog.

I am the owner of the Salty Paw and I would like to respond to this upsetting report from the dissatisfied client with the chow. I have tried to reach out to her privately to discuss this matter but unfortunately we have not heard from her. I now feel compelled to address these statements publicly because the circumstances and result that have been reported by this chow owner are not only false and very upsetting to all of us at the Salty Paw, but to our many loyal and concerned clients.
Perhaps the only thing more important to us at The Salty Paw than the satisfaction of our customers, is the care and well being of our animal clients? who we consider part of our "Paw" family, as evidenced by our numerous prior excellent reviews and countless satisfied customers.

Regarding this customer's comments, it so happens that I was present when she brought her chow in to redeem the complimentary dog grooming session they won at our last Halloween contest. The following is exactly what transpired:

The client specifically asked for a "lion?s cut". We had a 20-25 minute consultation with her, wherein our head groomer not only described in great detail what a "lion?s cut" entails, (very short body, long mane), we also told her what blade we would have to use to get it that short, and showed her sample pictures of what the style would look like. In addition we showed her the how very severe matted her chow was and explained that we would have to cut them out causing the shave to be even closer to the dog?s skin in order to achieve the desired "lions cut" style she asked for. The client agreed and was very excited.

Even though this dog

was very difficult to work with, our staff handled and groomed her with the same level of care and love we devote to all our clients. We know chows and have many chow clients, so we are fully aware of their needs and temperaments . In fact, during initial consultations with owners, we explain that some dogs will take longer to groom, depending on those individual needs & temperaments, so we may stop many times to give the dog a break, as we did in this case.
After the hair cut, this chow was bathed not once but twice because she needed it. And, as with all our grooming clients, bathing includes cleaning the ears, and brushing teeth. A total of four (4) hours was spent grooming this dog and she was picked up five hours later. At that time, the owner expressed nothing but delight and satisfaction and even took pictures and commented to myself and staff how great her dog looked.

That is exactly what happened in this case. We are all therefore, all very baffled as to why this owner would repeatedly make these false statement and then not respond to our attempts to reach out to her to better understand her concerns and try to rectify any legitimate problems that may have existed.

If any of our past or current clients have had any disappointing experiences I urge you to contact me directly and I will address them & make every attempt to rectify them. Thank you, Amanda Byron Zink, owner of "The Salty Paw."

took my chow chow on 10./16 she was last years halloween contest winner. I took her in to be groomend. She was never bathed. Her ears were dirty. She was shaved...who shaves a chow chow. When May the groomer kept saying my dog had her hair matted here and there it should have been a red flag. I asked her to groom my dog not shave her, She looks horrible and she was also in a lot of pain. She could not walk and looked so sad it broke my heart. Yes she is a chow chow but any reputable groomer should know how to work with any type of dog. This is my second time taking my dog there. The first time she looked beautiful(this groomer no longer there). This last time May and the the grooming crew left my dog traumatized. I will never let anyone(groomer) touch her again. She won the contest last year and if they are so money hungry they should have told me they decided not to take in my dog. My poor dog was there for 5 hours and ended looking like a mess and they did not bathe her clean her ears. Shame on the groomers and shame on the owner! Why are you offering prizes you are not honoring????

I love this store!! What a find!! I love all of the special and unique things they offer. I have two Yorkies and this place has everything!! I ordered custom collars for my little guys and they were beautiful when they came in. They also carry a homemade food line that my dogs love!

I also have my dogs groomed there and out of every groomer I have tried in the city, so few of them are even good at what they do. I was sooooo impressed with May. She really gets it and is very talented with the animals. My little boy is really tough to get to sit still and she has him melting in her hand in minutes. Can't say enough about this place, worth stopping by to check it out.

My dog has been attending day camp and getting groomed at the Salty Paw for the past year, and I cannot say enough great things about The Salty Paw, Amanda. Janet, Hollis, May and the rest of the crew. I would not trust my dog with anyone else and I know he wouldn't be happy anywhere else. He literally drags me there on all of walks whether it's a day camp day or not! They are truly the best at what they do.

I have brought my puppy to Salty Paw day camp since he was 3 months old. He is now 15 months old. The loving and caring nature of the staff as well the personal attention that they have provided to my family and my dog are some of the many reasons I love this place so much. Each day that I bring my dog to day camp, he is so happy and excited to see his buddies as well as the staff. From their day care, to excellent grooming and great boutique, the Salty Paw is the ultimate haven for any dog and their family. I highly recommend the Salty Paw to any pet owner!

The Salty Paw has been taking care of my dogs for several years, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Not only do they do a wonderful job with the grooming, they always treat my dogs with the same care and love that I do at home. They are also extremely accommodating with drop offs, pick ups, and special arrangements when necessary.

I highly recommend The Salty Paw for any daycare or grooming services your pups might need.

My pup and I are regular visitors to The Salty Paw. I go to order food or schedule grooming appointments among other things and my pup goes for the free treats and because she just loves it there.

The groomers are also very skilled and everyone there clearly loves and respects the animals as family members.

The place is itself is just great- a really funky, pleasant and friendly atmosphere- not too big and overwhelming or overly industrious. My pup always feels comfortable, safe and at home there and we highly recommend them.

Hi
I just wanted to update everyone, Eric is NO longer with the Groom Spa, and has been gone since this incident last year with our client Sonia. Sonia is still with us and we are so happy we were able to keep her as a client. Come on down and check out our store, and mention this review and get 10% off next groom or purchase. Tell them Amanda sent you.

I've been living in the financial district for a year and finally found a groomer that's worth coming back to over and over and over again! May is a really talented groomer. My dog loves her. It's a perfect cut every time. And once we came back from a muddy, rainy hike upstate. His fur was in knots and tangles. One trip to The Salty Paw and she restored him... just like new! She is great with dogs.

Other offerings here are a doggy day care which I haven't tried and some high end toys and supplies, and wholesome all-natural treats.

Bottom line this is a great neighborhood boutique with excellent groomers.

I took my 6 month old Maltese Snowball to get groomed. The woman was very sweet and asked lots of questions before she took him in back. They have glass doors where you can view your dog being groomed and i looked in and he was happy and giving kisses to the groomer. He normally is shy around new people but really took to the groomer. I was pleasantly happy with how he looked after. It was exactly what i wanted and she even added a bandanna for the finishing touch. I will be taking him back regularly. The staff was also very informative and helpful without being pushy. I even got samples of doggy cologne and some treats. I am so glad i found them! PAWS UP for the SALTY PAW!

Took my little Maltese-Gracie in, and wanted a really specialty cut called a lamb cut, and May the groomer there did a really great job. I haven't found a place downtown that could even come close. The store is really cute, lots of unique collars, and these really cool beds that you can pick your colors. I ordered one for Gracie with her name on it. Really like this place I will be going back. Highly recommend it.

Interesting place, my dog loved it, we don't have alot of dog places near us, I have lived down here for months and didn't know it was there. This was a great find, i recommend checking it out. I had my two dogs groomed there, and bought some Lolli-pups, really cute and the dogs flipped over them.

I dropped-off my puppy with specific instructions for the groomer. The groomer had ensured me that my dog will be ready in time for me to catch my train back home for the weekend. It took the groomer 5hours just to groom my 5lbs puppy. And now, I hardly recognize my dog AND I missed the off-peak train AND the groomer was so VERY RUDE when I complained. Eric is exceptionally rude, very dramatic and didn't even offer to give any discount or offer an apology...the owner had to apologize for his behavior. Unless they get rid of this pompous, self-proclaimed groomer, I really don't think I'm going back there, even though their other groomer- May did a good job the last time.

Finally!!! A place that I will take my dog to get groomed. The groomer did a wonderful job and when I asked her to fix the face a little she didn't give me an attitude like the groomer did at The Poochie Place. The package price is great too, it includes teeth brushing which not a lot of other places do. Their merchandise are unique and cute and very reasonably priced. Great place to get gifts and treats for your pets.

The Salty Paw is one of the best dog spa's in NYC. They are so great that I travel with my pooch from the UES. The service is amazing and I LOVE their merchandise. They have the greatest toys, accessories, sweaters and treats. My dog loves going there and gets so excited in the cab because she knows she's in for a treat!! The additional cab expense is well worth it since their prices are amazing compared to what I have paid for similar items on the UES. Eric, the groomer, is the greatest and genuinely loves animals!

Thank goodness for the Paw!!!!!!

Been to many other groomers in my day but since I have been in the downtown area, I have yet to be as happy as I am with The Salty Paw. From their great pet products to the way they make my pooch look to the friendly owners, I really must give them a big pat on the back!

I highly reccomend bringing your pet here as they are very trust worthy and time efficient.

Also, the girls that work there are awesome! Very nice addition to the neighborhood.

I live just north of Peck Slip and I thought the Salty Paw was a cute store with a great selection. Liked their merchandise, but everything seemed really overpriced. I noticed they had grooming. I had my partner take our Maltese in for a basic cut.. When he went to pick her up she was cut way too short and seemed terrified!! I would not recommend getting your dog groomed here.

Cons: Terrible Dog Grooming, Too Expensive

.

After reading the many positive reviews here, I took my dog in to get groomed, and they did a very poor job. It took too long and my dog looked awful. I will avoid this place in the future.

I've lived in the neighborhood for 12 years and I've got to say that the Salty Paw was a needed addition to the neighborhood.

From a retail standpoint? It's a homey, fun alternative to our local, gray & depressing Petland Discount with more interesting merchandise (they make a point to try to find local suppliers and have things made special for the store.)

From a social standpoint? It's a destination for neighbors with dogs to get together. The owners are both social dynamos -- they live in the neighborhood and want to get to know you and the animals. It must be said that Amanda is a little dog-crazy -- if she starts rolling around on the floor with your pup and you think she's laying it on a bit thick? I assure you, she's not acting. She's just a freak about dogs. Just look at her giganto Great Dane Tyras that sometimes "helps out" behind the cash register. Also, the events I've been to (a Valentine's Party and a fashion show) have been both well-organized (cocktails & hors d'ouvres) and amusing (dogs in fancy duds) and lucrative (ahem, yes, my bf's dog won a second place gift certificate in a costume contest). And no one went home from either of those events empty-handed...giftbags for everybody.

From a grooming standpoint? I have a dog with short hair that doesn't get groomed, but I'm there enough where I've seen Eric do some pretty cool stuff. Do you know what a Komondor is? A Newfie? The big hairy guys come out transformed -- they smell good, and their insane fur coats have been heroically tamed. At the other end of the spectrum I've seen a lot of cute tiny fluffy dogs come out with the fancy, technical 'do's too.

If you live in the neighborhood, you should give it a try. The girls spent so much time trying to get this place right and they're constantly working on making it better (products, staffing, etc...) If you're not getting what you need there, it's because you're not asking!

Pros: Outgoing local owners, Cool digs with a casual seaport vibe, Dog-related events, Treats!

Cons: My dog really wants to whiz on the planters by the door. ;)

We used to live in the Financial District and took our collie (loooong hair, tough to groom) to pretty much every groomer in the neighborhood, trying to find a good one for her. She is very skittish and generally comes home depressed. We were PLEASANTLY SHOCKED at how happy she was after her first visit to The Salty Paw! I think she wanted to stay there and hang out, whereas she's usually running for the door. And the grooming job was great, she looked beautiful and wasn't just shaved short like some give-up groomers will do. We have moved to the UWS, but still drive her downtown to go to The Salty Paw, despite a Biscuits & Bath that is right around the corner from us. She is just so happy there, and the groomer is fantastic. It is worth mentioning as well that it is a great value - they definitely don't overcharge. And the shop itself is a great little posh place to pickup treats for your pup. Its like SoHo's Doggie Style at the seaport.

Cons: None!

I have an older cat, who seriously needed a grooming. He is overweight, and less then pleasant. I thought it would be impossible to have him groomed, but he really does stink and I felt he would just be more comfortable after being cleaned and a trim. The groomers at the salty paw were able to groom hm completely , and were able to control him without trouble. I am so happy to know he is not a troublesome cat, and that I can have him regularly taken care of without having to go to the vet! The employees were super nice, and the store was really cool , it was all and all a pleasant experience.

I just moved to the neighborhood from Brooklyn and am still getting to know the area. I took my dog here for grooming and a sweater for the winter weather and the staff were very helpful and friendly in also referring me to many other businesses in the neighborhood. They are not only great at what they do but very nice to too. Thanks!

We were so happy to find our old groomer--Eric G at The Salty Paw. We have a havenese and a lab mix that use to go to Eric at his previous groom spa. We moved downtown and could not believe so did he. This groomer is the best they come!! I don't know Alexa, but she apparently does not work at the Salty Paw anymore-so not to worry by the bad reviews on her-she is gone.

The Store's owners were so friendly and know their stuff. They have some really GREAT things I have never seen before, and there always seems to be new things each visit.

We are so happy to find such a great dog store and have been reunited with our groomer. looking forward to the halloween party!!

Brought my maltese here last week, and she seriously got the best hair cut she's ever had. Alexa, the groomer, treated her like it was her own dog. So much so that my dog didn't want to leave. Loved this place!! Had cute stuff in the shop area as well. So glad this opened in my neighborhood!

I have seen so much buzz on this new store and groom spa in the past several months-we had to stop in. We live in tribeca and have a toy poodle...and decided after we saw their store on TV and in the NYC cabs..to try them out. Nothing short of excellent! Eric was our groomer the first time-and the hype is all that-he is great. We went last week, and Jackie (their newest groomer) was just as good. All hand scissor cut, and did a beautiful job!! It did take 3 hours, but knowing it was all done by hand-did not matter.
The owners are very helpful and sweet. I loved all the one of kind items and we even had our pup measured for a custom coat. It arrived in 4 days and was the least expensive coat we have owned for our dog.
Wish this new place all the success and the grooming is by far best in the neighborhood. Worth the trip!!

After reading the below reviews, I just had to write a comment to support this great pet store in the Seaport! I live downtown and stop by this store frequently with my Jack Russell Terrier, Lucy. She loves the store because the owner(s) are always sooooo friendly and greet her with love and treats. The merchandise is adorable and I have found the groomers and staff members to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful and caring. It is unfortunate that dogs sometimes get nicked during grooming, but I can't imagine that the store owners and staff members didn't do their utmost to rectify the situation. All I can say is Lucy and I are loyal customers and could not fathom shopping any where else!

I took my maltese to this place to get a grooming as it was close to my house and had been taking him uptown, what a mistake. Alexa, who was the groomer butchered him. She told me he was matted (which he was a little) and would have to cut him shorter. When I arrived to pick him up he looked like a freak. His ears were cut so short you couldn't even see them. I specifically told her that I didn't want him cut so short that you could see skin. She never paid attention to what I said he looked like he was shaved. Uneven all around. She left his face hair long which didn't match the rest of his body. It was really the worst grooming I have ever seen. His ears were nipped and bleeding and she never mentioned anything to me. She should be FIRED. I will never go back and I will make sure that I tell everyone about this awful place. DON'T EVER take your dog to this place.

A few days ago I took my dog for a grooming and it was the biggest mistake I made! I asked for a trim and my dog came back scalped! When I went to pick him up I didn't even recognize him. I was speechless. His once fluffy ears are now gone. The cut was uneven. One of the girls insisted that he looked great which made it worse. I could have done a better job with a buzzer than pay for them to do this. What made matters worse was when I took him home, I found they nicked the back of my dog's ear and never even mentioned it to me. My dog has been sad for days now! Not a good experience! Alexa (the groomer) needs to go back to grooming school and retake her test. She is NOT qualified to "grrroom" any animal. Start by grooming an apple!

Message from The Salty Paw

As a resident of the South St Seaport/Financial District for almost 15 years, and owner of the greatest dog ever "Tyras" our great dane, I felt there was this need in my neighborhood to do something for dogs (and pets) that had not yet been created. When we opened in 2007, the idea was to create a warm and inviting place to hang out with your dog, as well as try to carry things you wont find anywhere else, have the most knowledgeable staff and the BEST groomers in town. I feel we have succeeded. Stop by and say Hi, and get your complimentary Fido treat and mention you read this and get 10% off services.

Best,

Amanda & Tyras
