I'm stuck with MagnaCare because of my employer (they really aren't giving their support staff top-notched anything let alone health insurance...and we don't even have dental!!)...and MagnaCare is by far the WORST! First of all, finding an in-network provider is like finding needles in haystacks. The online directory is OUT OF DATE...and when I do call a provider, he/she no longer accpets MagnaCare (gee I wonder why???)... or that person is not part of the "network". This insurance company is a joke and if my employer really cared about the employees, giving us what we truly deserve, we switch back to Aetna!!!

I dealt with MagnaCare post surgery last summer when I need at home nursing care. MagnaCare only approved a small number of visits...and my surgical wound was far from healed after the "last" visit. The nursing agency and myself had to fight tooth and nail with Magnacare for an extension. That should never had happened as my surgical would was open, abdominal, and took about 6 weeks to CLOSE!!!

I'm looking for another job so that I would hopefully get better health insurance!

Pros: The worst insurance ever!

Cons: None, really!

This insurance company is horrible. I have to work out of network in order to survive this economy. I get sick or hurt off the job and it takes forever to get the doctor visits paid for. Adding insult to injury,or just plain lying, they then only pay 35 to 40 percent of the bill, not the 80% that they claim they pay for out of network services; any area outside the tristate area is cheaper too. Magnacare pays out what they think is 80% not what it really is. They, as a rule of thumb, deny all injury claims as job related before finally paying, but you must fight them first. When paying out of service providers in an area that is 25% cheaper due to demographics they still only pay approx. 37% of an already cheaper bill, thereby insuring the fat ass ceo gets to keep his fat ass paycheck, by the way these are the types of people Thomas Jefferson was refering to as tyrants. The really horrible part is the out of network deductable is not attainable because of the paultry amount that they allow towards the deductable, the 37% that is called 80%. I still have to pay 100% to the doctor who treated me, my wife or one of my 3 kids, not 80% which I only pay 37% because according to my math it really is the fair amount. WE CARE FOR OUR INSURED! BULLSHIT!!!

Pros: probably some

Cons: almost everything

I sprained/broke my ankle and freaked out. Living alone in NYC I wasn't really sure what to do. Knowing the horror stories the FIRST call (before Mom!) was to Magnacare to get approved. I then called them back for ambulance approval (how else was I getting there?!) and was told no approval was needed but I "should be fine." Then I called my mom. Then I called an ambulance. Today I got the bill which reads, "Emergency Room visit - 584.00 Insurance Payment - .00 Insurance says not emergency Ins denied claim. call them w/ questions" Same situation for my $201 ambulance ride.

This, combined with the fact that doctors suddenly "aren't accepting new patients" once they learn I have Magnacare tells me one thing - DO NOT USE THIS INSURANCE COMPANY.

I will follow up after a phone call with the CEO tomorrow.

Pros: are there? I didn't think so...

Cons: Sprained/Broken Ankle is NOT an emergency?

Pros: local and responsive

Cons: none

Good luck findning a doctor in NYC that is reputable and recommended that takes Magnacare. Then if you decide to pay out of pocket and try to get reimbursed you will only get a tiny portion back.

MagnaCare is the pits! STAY AWAY - ZERO STARS - STAY AWAY.
They pay participating doctors a feeble amount, often resulting in feeble health care. They have a very thin representation in skilled healthcare professions. View their participating MD list with a keen eye. Note that if you need an, i.e. Neurosurgeon, you might have to travel 80 miles. If you question, they'll tell you that you don't need to see a Neurosurgeon, a Neurologist is just as good. Examine closely the 'Out of Network' fees. Should you happen to be struck with some complicated illness, & want to be seen by the (undeniably) 'best in the field', it will either cost you a fortune, AND/OR they'll harrass and intimidate you every step of the way. Many doctors I've seen openly state that they're routinely nickled & dimed by Magna, wish that they never joined, or will soon be leaving. I've even had one ask for more than the co-pay - they can't survive on what they receive in compensation. Re: the enrollees, if a HEALTHCARE PROVIDER(s) fails to provide them with information within a week or so, YOU, as, the enrollee, will receive threatening letters in an attempt to have YOU chase down the provider(s), no matter how sick you are - even if you're still being hospitalized. They will try any and every artifice imaginable to void your claim. If you have an emergency, you must call them for pre-approval to use an Emergency Room (WHY? - to disuade you from using your paid-for benefit. I wonder how many enrollees have been stuck with an Emergency Room bill as a consequence?) They do not care about you. They have proven to me that they DO NOT VALUE the enrollees or their health care.
BEWARE. IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, GO ELSEWHERE. FIND AN HMO THAT IS CONCERNED WITH THE HEALTH OF THEIR ENROLLEES. AN HMO THAT DOES NOT DRED PAYING OUT LEGITIMATE CLAIMS.

AND MAGNA-COMP??? THEIR NURSE EXAMINES YOU OVER THE PHONE AND ADEPTLY MINIMIZES YOUR INJURY, SIGHT UNSEEN, WHILE INTIMATING YOUR ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD.
