Pros: Loved the Beef Shepard pie

Cons: doesn't refill drinks often

I have lived in New York for over 4 years, and have never, ever been treated with the level of disrespect my boyfriend and I received from the waitress and supposed owner of this place. We came in about 15 minutes before closing and asked if they were still serving. They said yes, and before we ordered, we verified that we would have enough time to order food and a beer and not be rushed. The waitress said yes, if we "hurried up and ordered." That should've been our first indicator. We ate the greasy food quickly and before we had even finished, they gave us the bill, which we paid promptly. After the waitress got her money (+ a 20% tip), she told us we had to leave because they were closing up. I had 1/3 of my beer left! It had been less than 30 minutes since we arrived and she was forcefully kicking us out! We told her we had asked before we sat down if we would have time to sit and eat, and her response now was nothing but rude and indignant. Absolutely no respect. The food was definitely not worth the trouble, and this woman's attitude will make us NEVER return. People like that should simply not be in the restaurant business or be allowed to interact with the public.

Pros: beer

Cons: terrible, rude, disrespectful service

This is definitely the place to take people from out of town, get them a deep-fried Twix or twice-fried cherry pie. I love the food here. Unfortunately, it's cash only so I never rarely think to go there. Also, I've notice that if I eat a lot of this beer-battered pub-food I'll feel pretty awful for the rest of the day. And I wouldn't say I'm a fried-food light-weight either, I'm from New Orleans and every Wednesday is deep-fried seafood night in my apartment. You got to try this place, just don't make yourself sick!

Had an very positive experience at the Bay Ridge Restauraunt. Fish batter was crunchy and the fish tasty and fried to perfection. Chips (fries) were moist and well done, the way I like them. Teddy can make you feel right at home. Don't be put off by english humor its part of the experience! Lighten up and enjoy..............

I am not drawn to fish sandwiches, but I came in here with my son and ate a great fish sandwich. I stayed away from the fried twinkie, but maybe I will come back. It is worth the trip. The fries (chips) were very good too!

I'm a Brit and I've wanted to visit this place for a long time now. I finally went tonight. The food is as good as you would get in an average fish and chip place in the UK. Not great but not bad. I was expecting a little better based upon all the hype. What soured the experiece for me was the service. I wondered if the moody waitress was doing it for effect, but no, she was just plain moody. No credit cards was annoying. I handed over $80 for a $62 check, only to get the "do you want change" response. I gather that the place was better in its early days, so I guess I was a few years late. Brits, if you live close by, fair enough, but I wouldn't recomment doing what I did and that's to drive an hour to get what I had hoped to be a better experience.

Pros: Deserts

Cons: Service with a scowl

Excellent all around. Good prices and authentic tasty food. A couple of pointers to my American friends: (1) English "chips" are supposed to be moist in the center and even bend in the middle if you were to pick one up and hold it horizontally. And they are delicious. (2) As for fried mars bars and the like, those are a Scottish invention (they fry everything). Not to my taste, but my granny was Scottish so whatever.

Pros: Great food, good prices, cool toilet

Shepherds Pie with Mac 'n Cheese instead of Mashed Potatoes... Yes. Please.

Also? The dessert menu is proof that anything is better when it has been battered and deep fried. Think more funnel cake than KFC.

We went to Chip Shop with a group of six people hoping to share some relaxed good times and good food. Unfortunately, we were met with a rude hostess who seemed to be having a bad night and was blaming us for it with her attitude. The other staff was fine, but the food was unremarkable. It's not worth ruining your night with bad customer service to brave a fried twinkie or sub-par curry.

So I called the Chip Shop at 8 and ordered fish and chips. They told me it would take 40 minutes. An hour later I called because my food wasn't here yet. They told me the delivery guy was 2-3 minutes away. 30 minutes later I called and cancled because the food still wasn't here. This is the second time this has happened. Also, they never apologize. When I canceled they said "oh no problem."

The hype made me trek to this "great fish and chip shop". It sounded cool enough, so why not? Each of us ordered a different kind of basic fish and each was mediocre at best. The batter was not very tasty and Mc Donalds makes better fries. I said I would MUCH RATHER eat Long John Silvers' fish (everything tastes way better and it is about half the price) than theirs. Save your dough and go somewhere else. Vintage in the city made the best fish and chips Ive had, but I dont know if its on the menu anymore.

When they first opened the food was incredible, the service too! I mean I would eat there at least twice a week, until I weaned myself off. I recently stopped by and was surprised how just changing your cooking staff can be deadly, how? Now the food is just okay..nothing to jump up and down about at all along w/ an indifferent waitstaff.

Sure, fried food isn't necessarily good for you, but man, nobody does fish and chips like these guys. All their food tastes great, especially the Chip Butty (a french fry sandwich) and the friend macaroni. The various English deserts and beers are also fantastic, and the curry shop next door is surprisingly good too.

Pros: unique, tasty, reasonable prices

Cons: a tad unhealthy

A chip butty is buttered roll with chips inside. Sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen but it's super delicious. Every meal I've had there has been great. I know I should eat healthier but ChipShop makes you want to cheat. Plus, they have fizzy Ribena and drinks you'd only find in England. The wait staff is friendly and courteous and the food is cheap.

Cons: Finishing your meal

A joy from top to bottom. I am proudly half English and I felt immediately at home here. And the fish and chips was so fine I ate without a word--extremely generous portions, fresh, crisp batter and flaky white meat. Incredibly good chips too. I love the Brit atmosphere and the waitstaff is so friendly and welcoming. The only downside?
Finishing my meal. Oh, the Indian is great here too.

My family was flying the next day and I decided to take them out. Instead of being impressed, they were appalled by the service we received from the waitress. She was EXTREMELY rude and had a really bad attitude. I never give reviews but this is something people should know about.

I recently had a very bad lunch at the "chipshop". with the fact that I am english I went in very excited about the food. But I was so dissapointed by it. It was in no shape or form authentic , in fact it was just bad the chips were really greasy and soggy and I have no idea where they got the recipe for their "curry sauce" but it was not England. The batter on the sausage was non existent it had all fallen off and was on the plate swimming in grease.
So my advice is go for the nice service but have a salad.

I went here on New Years Day for the full English breakfast. The food was authentic enough, but the service was horrendous! They kept forgetting us and it took almost 45 minutes to get a fried candy bar. If you go, refuse any table next to a wall - you have to be right underfoot so they pay attention to you.

Being an englishman in the slope for 5 years I can absolutely recommend this gaff. The wait staff are cheeky, but not rude. Yanks may find it rude, but it isn't. Thats the way it is back home and it's called banter/sarcasm/humour. You give as good as you get. So if you can't get on with that, this ain't the place for you. Tea and Sympathy is the same. I love pies, and the pies here are excellent. Better than the Peters pies you get in the chip shops at home. It is a bit pricey, but it is good plentyful soul food. Don't expect fancy presentation either. This isn't a poncy restaurant like the Spotted pig in Manhattan, it's a down to earth place to eat and chill out for common people. Deserts are great. I would recommend the treacle pudding and custard. Mmmmm, lovely. Don't be afraid of the deep fried mars bars. They are very nice. Many a time I have ordered from here because I needed to tame a hangover. As stated before, delevery is about 40 mins, but thats because it's a very busy restaurant. Thats how it is, but don't let that put you off, its worth the wait. And the delivery guys are good lads. Oh yeah, bring cash. No credit cards here. It's a chip shop.......

For English greasy fish and chips, it really hits the spot, I'm English so I should know! So odd that the lowest of the low in take-away food in England should be elevated and served as "restaurant" food in NYC. But they do it well here and the captivating decor evokes many a passed event from Memory Lane in England. For those not interested deep-fried fish and chips (a.k.a. fries to you Americans), there are other options. My partner chose a chicken balti which was competently put together. The beef and onions pies had me reliving nights out with the lads in my youth. Ill be back to sample them another time. Since the fry-up blew the diet anyway, why not try the deep-fried mars bar to finish. Sounds desperate but is actually sickly, gooey and wonderful! Give it a go if youre a Brit| hungry for home.

After reading the reviews here, I decided I would have to try this place while on a business trip to Manhattan. After a brief Subway ride, I was seated and ready to feast on a order of Halibut & Chips, which laid before me. Simply the best fish & chips I've ever had. The fish was very flavorful, and firm, with a crisp batter. The chips were equally great. I'd definitely come back again.

Its great. Much better than Tea and Sympathy: better food, better value, better service, better khazi - everything. I had a great cod 'n' chips. The Chip Shop rocks. The fish is super fresh, the chips just the right combonation of crispy and soft, and the curry is unBELEivable. The waitstaff is always friendly and on the ball. My personal favorite is the decoupage loo--the walls are covered with British tabloid headlines. This is our favorite neighborhood place, and worth the trek from Manhattan.

for an american of english descent, i love the idea of chip shop. now in new york, a city replete with every cuisine imaginable, english has a spot as well! the tchotchkies on the wall are hillarious, and the china plate that the fish and chips arrive on screams England. i lament the fact though that the cod stocks in the atlantic are so depleted, that the flaky, soft, melt-in-your-mouth cod fillets i remember as a boy are hard to come by, and chip shop's cod comes off a little bit tough, but that's not their fault. the chips were delightful and with a generous sprinkling of malt vinegar, went perfectly with a pint of boddington's. well worth the subway ride and the $14! God Save the Chip Shop!

Very good tender flaky cod with great batter, but the chips were a bit overcooked and thin for my taste, (that's pretty arbitrary; I just prefer thicker chips). The deep-fried Twinkie was decent, but the highlight was the deep-friend Mars bar. It was AMAZING chocolatey yummy goodness. The decor and ambience were quite nice and very relaxed. The Park Slope location was quaint and pleasant; you'd have to be a trust-fund yuppie to think the area to be scummy. A bit pricey overall, and not somewhere I'd go every week, but overall solid and yum.

First impression's go a long way, and when I heard of the "Chip Shop" in park slope I can only say I was excited. However upon turning up to one of the not so nice parts of park slope I was a little let down, but still never judge a book by it's cover.
But as an American who served in the U.S army and was based in the U.K for six years I would say I have a little knowledge of British food. As a party of four we sampled one anothers food, the mash on the Sheperds Pie was as sloppy as a 7 eleven slurpy, but with out the flavor, the Steak & Kidney had very little steak and the Treacle Pudding was as dry as Mummies under garments.
Overall an over rated second to Greenwich village's Tea & sympathy and A Salt & Battery!

As a fish salesman I was very dissapointed when I ordered the Cod and my partner ordered the Rock salmon only to find that both fish were in fact the same and not any of the fish that I ordered! My inspection of the fish, both in texture, taste and color I would be confident in saying they were both Hake. If your going to sell variants of fish, it's a really good idea to stock that kind of fish, just a suggestion! The music was too loud and the waitress was very abrupt when questioned about the fish. A real dissapointment.

Came across this in Park Slope. More "Brit" ambience than A Salt & Battery. FIsh N Chips were non-greasy and quite delicious. Better than most of what I have tasted in London. Fried mars bar was surprisingly better than I expected. A very light, non greasy batter coated a gooey-chocolatey-nougaty bar that isn't cloying or strange at the very least. Not something I would eat all the time, but deserves more credit than the butt of jokes it is. Or maybe Chip Shop does it justice? For a culture that fries everything from hot dogs to cheese sticks, Americans shouldn't be so hasty to point fingers and make fun . . .

Better than in the Punjab. Highly recommended "lighter" fare to help save room for some deep fried chocolate!

Pros: Inexpensive, varied, tasty

Cons: crowded, group table

The best fish & chip i've ever eaten! I tried loads of times in London & always been dissapointed not even close to Chipshop. The prices were reasonable & a great selection of unusual British beers.

It seems this place is trying to survive off its gimmick. There are SO many better places to eat in Park Slope. The quality of food is okay, BUT be careful: portions of most of the dishes are tiny and extremely overpriced. If you MUST eat there, stick with the basics: fish and chips or chicken and chips... the ginger beer is weak and the shepherd's pie is the size of a pudding cup. (Incidentally, this review is being written by a 100 lb. woman.) The delivery service is the worst ever. Two dishes ordered from 5 blocks away taking an hour and 15 minutes on a Sunday night, with no apology offered? The service stinks.

The fish cakes are the best. The service is friendly. The punk rock decor is great. A splendid oasis for anglophiles and homesick Brits.
