Unheard of!
I called Ms. Tootsie's on a Friday afternoon to inquire about making reservations for a party of 9 on the following Sunday. I was told by the very polite gentleman with whom I spoke that I did not need to make a reservation, as my party was under 10 people. GREAT! This was going to be a wonderful, first time experience for my two sisters, my son, my two nieces, my nephew, and my Mom, whose 63rd birthday we were celebrating. I had bragged and boasted to my sister for three weeks about the treasures created in Ms. Tootsie's kitchen, and assured my family that they would NEVER forget the Ms. Tootsie's experience. I was SO RIGHT. My party arrived at Ms. Tootsie's at approx. 5:45pm on Sunday, May 2nd, and we were met at the door by two male Abercrombie and Fitch models who greeted us politely and then asked me if we had made reservations. I explained that I had called about reservations and was told they were not required for a party the size of mine. One of the two A&F gentlemen explained that, they were expecting a party of 25 to arrive within the next 10 minutes, and that they were already... are you ready for this?... RUNNING LOW ON FOOD, and would be unable to accommodate any other guests, for fear that the fare would not last through the evening! After suggesting several other "very nice restaurants" to my family and me, and apologizing ever-s0-humbly again and again, the gentlemen smiled...politely... before dissapearing back into the cafe. My family and I shook off our disbelief, made our way to a soul-food buffet on Oregon Ave., and Mom's birthday celebration was a smashing success after all! Thank you, Ms. Tootsie.

where do i begin... ms tootsies was recommended by a friend. it was me and my boyfriends 2 yr anniversary and i wanted to try something different for him and we both love good soul food but its hard to come by. well first there was an hour wait which was acceptable. while waiting we walked around south street because the hostess said she will call us when our table opens. so when she called us we went right back and 3 men in suits didnot want to let us in because they said they stopped serving at 9. well after telling them we were on the waitin list they let us in. we were seated upstairs which was a very intimate setting so things were looking up. our waiter came over and took our drink orders. i ordered a daiquiri my boyfrirnd ordered iced tea along with wings for an appetizer, 15 minutes later our waiter came back with the iced tea and said they didnt have a blender to make a daiquiri but he recommended ms tootsies long island iced tea so i agreed. we placed our order. approx 25 min later another waiter came out with our food and gave it to the table next to us, then our waiter came out and took the plates from them and gave them to us, which is nasty in itself. i still had no drink so jus asked for a soda, which took another 10 mins. the food wasnt great the service was horrible, oh by the way, when we got our check, the waiter relized we never got our appetizer and asked if we wanted it to go. i said absolutely not, and you remember in the beginning the guys out front with the suits said they stopped serving at 9, well it was 1030 and people were still coming in and being seated. so is it that CERTAIN peple will not be served after 9. no apologys no remorse...will never go back or recommend to anyone... now for good soulfood and great service... try warmdaddys....thats the real deal

This past weekend I went to Ms. Tootsies for the first time since they have had their upstairs dining open. First off I must say that this was an absolutely amazing move on their part because we didn??t have to wait at all?the downstairs area usually got a little crowded on its own. The atmosphere upstairs was also elegant and relaxing. The food was utterly delicious as always and the service was great. Our server was on point the whole night?I believe his name was Rich.
Hats off to you Ms. Tootsies, we will be back in the near future.

For a number of months, my girlfriend has been raving about Miss Tootsies the South Philly "gourmet" soul food restaurant. I have to say I was rather excited about the chance to visit the place and a few weeks ago I did for the first time!
I was extremely dissapointed. I ordered the restaurant week special of fried chicken, collard greens, garden salad and 7 UP cake.
The chicken was really awful. It was very dry, slightly cool, the crust was overcooked too crunchy and very flavorless. The collard greens were ok, but extremely salty. The garden salad was good, but the portion was too small to really enjoy. The 7 UP was good, but it was really cold. I hear the food there isnt actually cooked at the restaurant, but at a nearby catering company. No wonder it didnt taste freshly cooked because its not!
Overall, I found the atmosphere very nice. Tthe service was impeccable and the decor modern and very cheerful just like the people who were at the restaurant. Theres a huge Buddhist sculpture in the restaurant and curiously also a Roman Catholic candle holder that one lights to say a prayer of petition.
I would like to say a prayer for Miss Tootsies. Dear Lord, may this restaurant's food improve and let it stop resting on its so called "laurels."
Miss Tootsies is too highly overrated. I could get a better quality meal at a hole in the wall soul food kitchen up in N Philly than this joint. I wrote to Mr. Parker the owner of Miss Tootsies about my experience there. He did not write back. I wonder then if he really cares about his customers

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that??s fair, however after reading the last negative review I feel compelled to give a piece of my mind in defense of Ms. Tootsies, my favorite soul food restaurant.
Let me start off by saying that I am a Philadelphia local and YES this is a place that I enjoy quite often. To me there??s nothing more enjoyable than an evening out, surrounded by mouth watering soul food and an atmosphere that lets me unwind from everything else in my life?and this place has all of it. Their southern fried chicken and mac??n cheese are usually what I go for (even though the rest of the menu does me justice as well) and serve as the perfect remedy for my soul food cravings. I don??t understand where the negative reviews come from. I have been to the south on numerous occasions because my wife??s side of the family comes from Georgia and Ms. Tootsies compares very well to the authentic southern cooking I??ve had. My wife and I are loyal patrons to Ms. Tootsies and we will always be.

Ms. Tootsies food is OK at best to me. I ate there a few times since 2001, I've never paid for it thank goodness. Now I am so proud of the owner doing his thang. However I am so tired of people posting this is the best food and I am from the South. So what! There are sooo many people from the South that can't boil water! As Martin Lawrence said " Now you know you can't use processed cheeeeez!" Please if people were truly from the South and old enough to know they did NOT have processed cheese originally. That started as a Philadelphia thing. It taste like what it is processed! (Kraft anyone?) I am not impressed by Ice Tea from a can in a cute bottle with a slice of watermelon. The fried chicken is the best thing they have going. People love the atmosphere and so do I but if you want food that taste like it came from your kitchen go to a Soul Food Joint where Mama is coming out of the back with her apron on with her hair pressed uder that hair net. Now that's good eating. By the way, the prices could be cheaper for what you are really getting.

I took some friends to Ms. tootsies this past weekend for their first time. Even though I've been there a few times before this time was unbelievably outstanding. My friends and I were so pleased with everything...from the food to the service to the great ambiance. The fried chicken here is straight from the south, their mac n cheese is so cheesy and delicious and their candied yams are right from my mothers kitchen. I can't say enough good things about this place...you have to go here and experience it for yourself. I also just found out that they are open 7 days a weeks which makes me very happy yet nervous at the same time because I am trying to watch my weight.

Pros: The best Fried chicken in town

Cons: no draw back for me

My first visit to Ms. Tootsies was my first and last. Even though I didn't have to pay for my food due to a friend taking me to dinner, I was still upset because as much as I do not like McDonalds, I would rather have had that. Including me and my friend, there where four other guests in the place and the service was that of a packed house. I am also not clear on what they consider southern cooking but this place does not have it. I am from the south and what I tasted at this place was canned side dishes and mac and cheese that had so much cheese in it, it would clog u up for days. The prices are a whole 'nother story. OMG I WOULD NEVER GO OR TAKE ANYONE I KNOW TO THIS PLACE. NOT EVEN MY WORST ENEMY. GIVE ME CHINESE FOOD, WHETHER ITS CAT, DOG, OR WHATEVER, ANY DAY.

I have never written a food review - strange, considering how much i love it... I am planning a friend's bachelor party and was thinking of Ms Tootsies for dinner... having read some "poor service" comments, I thought I would chime in...

There are two separately operated restaurants - both are "Miss Tootsies". one is casual and laidback (and also BYO.) The folks working here make you feel like family - great service, very pleasant, funny. There is often a wait; and they always offer to hold on to my brewskis while I wait. Unfortunately (and recently) the BYO restauarant is now only open on Friday and Saturday. i've been 5-6 times - loved it every time.

Now to the other side: Service is awful. The staff and many patrons have horrible attitudes. I mistakenly took my brother there for his birthday. me, my brother and two friends were fairly casually dressed - after all, we're eating fried chicken, mac n cheese and collared greens. I dont want to play the race card (well, yeah I do..) but 3 white boys and a puerto rican got horrible service, odd stares, etc, etc. We actually cancelled our reservation and walked next door. I was just back last week (only because the BYO/casual restaurant is no longer open during the week) and I got the same strange stairs. My crowd was mixed - Thai/Mexican/white. We got the "what are you doing in OUR restaurant" vibe. lots of snobs. totally bizarre.

moral to the story: go on the weekend. get great food and friendly service from the casual BYO. Or, poke your head into the formal side.

oh - and I think (though not sure) - that the kitchen is the same for both restaurants. food is great - I recommend the turkey legs with gravy, mac, greens and okre (sp?)

We got there after coming from connecticut and looking for a parking space for about 40 minutes, that's just philly. We go in the first door and were asked to go next door to the bar? So we said oookk and it was'nt as intimate as the first place, so after standing in the doorway and take it was cold out that night...I first noticed the attitude of one of the waitresses and how slow she was moving and their was an elderly couple that sitting right on my left and we were so close to them I had no idea anyone was there. they were complaining about how long was it going to be before they got there food? So I said hmmm ok let's just see what happens, finally the hostess comes and brings us upstairs and she did'nt tell us we were going to a bar lounge and we don't drink...so we got upstairs and bought 6 dollar pepsi's . So she never took our names and so I was wondering how this worked, but the couple that came in after us asked the bartender how it worked. The hostess was supposed to remember all the people that she brought up and then bring them down once the table was ready. I said ok I guess her memory was good...nope!! 2 couples that came in awhile after us were seated before me and my wife!! This on top of waiting for over 40 minutes and so now we're getting mad and decided if she's not here in a certain amount of time we would leave, but then she shows up and we thinking maybe things are looking up. She walks ahead of us to the lobby and after we squeeze and bump people to get to the front she never even shows us our seats and we just stand their for a sec wondering what's going because she stopped helping us and went to the front door to talk to new customers. She looks at us and points at this little rinky dink table directly in front of the door where people are coming in and it was cold that night and I don't like people standing right over me while I eat. I mean right in the doorway, so we got up and went to wendy's for a burger instead, never going back!

Pros: nicely dressed people, music good, atmosphere was nice, maybe reservations would work better

Cons: service sucked, too tight, food I never had it so...3 dollar pepsi? mostly ice

i haven't been able to make it over in a bit but OMG! I loved the food! The greens reminded me of the ones my NC grandmother used to make. The catfish was amazing, the mac and cheese was the best I've have in years. If the service was slow, I don;t even remember (I was there for a b-day party and we were imbibing). The food is the thing here. Set your reservations and enjoy!

I have no comment on the food because me and my husband never made it in. We went on Sat 10/18/08 around 10:30pm and was told the wait was about 20-25 mins. That was a not a problem the problem is that Mr. KeVen Parker (owner) waiting area is outside. Yes you must wait outside in the natural elements and when your table is ready they will call you via your cell phone. How unprofessional is that. Sat was a little cool and my husband and I was going to go next door to the bar lounge but was told we had to pay to get in $10. I'm a little confused as to why you have to pay to get in the bar if you are waiting for a table right next door at his other establishment. I don't think patrons one should have to stand in elements to wait for a table and two should not be charged to enter the warm atmosphere next. Waht happens in the winter months and rainy days. Keven Parker instead of turning the place next into a bar you should have expanded that cubicle of a resturant that you have to make for a better waiting area. I even heard his staff complaining about it.

I love Ms Tootsie food!!! I hope that in the near future, their next door open to accomodate folks. With that being said, the place is too small, even though they have a place next door, they don't utilize it properly. If you happen to go in the winter time, you're screwed because they won't use their next door for their long wait list.

Say what? Ms. Tootsies is delicious, and one of the best soul food joints I've been to. Very nice atmostphere and of course people. I would defintely recommend this spot to others. I'm from Philly but currently live in Maryland. But whenever I'm home I bring my friends (from diffrent geographic locations) and this is one spot I always check out and they all love it. I havent found anything like it in DC yet? Try it, you wont be disappointed. Kevin Parker is doing a great job, Kudos!!!!!

I havent found anything like it in DC yet? Try it, you wont be disappointed. Kevin Parker is doing a great job, Kudos!!!!!

Pros: Everything from the rooty to the tooty!!!

Cons: Small

Visited last night. I had high hopes for this place, and it turned out to be only a little above average in some areas, and disappointing in others.

I will say that the fried chicken, the mac and cheese, and the blackeyed peas were quite good. It wasn't the absolute best fried chicken I have ever had, but it was very good. The iced sweet tea while good in it's own right, was maybe a little too sweet. But here's where they lost us. The wife ordered the smothered turkey chops and found the meat to be a little dry even with the gravy. I tasted it as well and agreed with her. That dish would be so much better off if they served it as just a regular turkey dish with stuffing and the gravy which would have tasted a lot better. Trying to turn turkey into a pork chop didn't work so well this time. It was never meant to be served and cooked that way. Maybe it's good on other nights and they had an off night with that dish. I don't know. I liked the gravy.

Also had a problem with the service. Our waitress, while very nice, completely forgot to order our salad from the kitchen that we had ordered as a starter. She let us know right before the main dishes were set to come out and apologized, but at that point we decided to skip the salad since the food was coming anyway. It's not good if your staff forgets things like that, and disappointing since we wanted to try the salad with the lime chicken. And it seemed that several tables who seated after ours got their food much quicker than we got ours. I will say that what everyone else was eating looked good, and we found ourselves staring at everyone else's meal because we weren't eating.

This place had such good reviews and I had built it up in my mind. I was disappointed to have this experience. And now the wife never wants to go back. It is a shame because they do several things very well. But I think the management may be resting on it's laurels a bit. They've got to step up their game.

Pros: some very good dishes

Cons: some not so good dishes, and service was lacking

Have been meaning to go here for ages. Went on a Thursday night, around 8:30pm, which I guess is a slow night for them. Were maybe 4 other tables occupied in the restaurant. We had to wait a REALLY long time to place our order, get our drinks, get our salad, get our entrees, get our check... it was painful. The staff seemed too relaxed, probably because it was a slow night, and just appeared much more intent on hanging out and talking to each other as opposed to serving.

Huge positive - the food was truly phenomenal. We had the fried chicken and the ribs. Mac and Cheese. Not a single complaint. Probably worth going for the food, but I kind of shocked at how incredibly poor the service was on a slow Thursday night..

I don't know why anyone would give a bad review to such a place, because the wait time is that of Red Lobster and Olive Garden and any other restaurant that you go to. But the only difference is that they give you a lovely lounge to sit in and drink until your table is ready. If you love SOUL FOOD, and you happen to be in Philly, check out MS. TOOTIES. one of the best or possible the best in Philly.

Pros: everything that of a typical restauraunt that is in high demand

Cons: I would recommend that they expand their restauraunt cause it's that good

Ms. Tootsies has great food and atmosphere provided you come at the right time. My boyfriend, his mother and I arrived at the location last Sunday night. Stood there and waited for service, and waited and waited only to find out the host was standing right next to us in full conversation with some girls at a table, an arms length away. Are you serious!! You have three patrons awaiting service and you ignore them. How simple is that, but to him I guess it didn't really matter it's not money he was losing. This is sad for a black owned establishment that I supported for years, even went to their offsite when they were renovating. I sure hope the owner is aware of his/her incompetent staff. If asked about this place in future I will be sure to direct them to any other soul food place.

Pros: Food and Ice Tea (if you get to sit and eat)

Cons: Service, service, service (and we wonder why black businesses don't make it)

I was so Hungry one night. Me and my sister went to ms. Tootsie's. the food was the best. The ice tea was something to die for. They put watermelon inside it! That give it a taste i have never taste before! The chicken was so tender and good! The mac and Cheese was better then the way my mom make it. And when i was younger it was the best to me. ms.Tootsie's is highly recommended to any and every one. I say go every time your hungry!

Let me first say that when I walked into the door I was greeted by someone. Everyone there was so nice and the food was soo tasty. They were prompt when they brought my food, and when I put that first spoonful of mac and cheese I felt like I was in heaven. And don't get me started on their iced tea. It brought me back to when I was a little girl drinking iced tea in church whenever they had a special service. Overall I had a great experience and recommend this place to all.

My first and my last expereince and Ms Tootsies was a very negative one. Our group arrived at the restaurant at 3:45 pm to have dinner with old friends and coworkers prior to seeing a show scheduled for 6:30 pm. The wait to be seated was an hour and 15 minutes even though we were told it would be forty minutes. Once seated at 5:00 pm we placed our order and then we waited, and waited and waited, finally at 5:30 pm with nothing to eat, we asked the waitress about our order, when she came back to our table she informed us that the cooks changed shifts and our order was mispaced. Okay this restaurant has all of 40 seats what the heck! It looked to us that there were many take out orders being prepared, which only upset us more. When the manager was told of our disappointment, he came to the table and apologized for the wait, but when asked about the take out orders that were going out faster than those being served, his response was the orders came in before we were seated. OMG! Another 20 minutes went by and he came back to the tabe to inform us that they were waiting for the order of chicken breast to be cooked, we then asked him to send the rest of the orders, as we didn't have long for our show to begin. Well that never happened. All the food came at 6:05 pm and we had time to eat maybe a piece of chicken, because the rest went into take out containers due to the show beginning in 25 minutes. So we slow jogged to the theater after putting our food in the car. Little did he know that everyone at that table was in the food service business and COULD NOT EAT FOOD THAT HAD BEEN SITTING IN THE CAR FOR 3 HOURS!!! The manager offered to give us a discount of $22. But what we really lost was the $112. we spent on dinner. What a disappointment, I will never go back or recommend this establishment.

Here i am, writing my review.. I recently visited Ms. Tootsies on a Saturday evening in May- the 17th to be exact- party of 7... NOT GOOD. After reading several reviews, I was still a little skeptical, and but never the less, went anyway. Needless to say, all the negatives I read in the reviews were ABSOLUTELY ON POINT- the wait- 2 HOURS the menu- ran out of Collards and Whiting, the space- small- seats 40 thats right, the ENTIRE RESTAURANT SEATS 40 PEOPLE. Another negative was, the lounge- next door, where they tell you , you can hang out, and have a drink or 2 until your party is called, -yeah that one- booked a PRIVATE EVENT- on a Saturday night. I MEAN WHO DOES THAT??? So all the patrons that were waiting patiently for dinner- literally were waiting outside on the side walk. I mean seriously, that was just not a good business move. We finally were seated - @ 10pm, and the only thing that made my dinner enjoyable was the company I kept. Thanks to my friends and family, the night was not a total disaster. The food was ok- service medicore. I dont think I will be going back. We're moving on the the next place. I give Ms. Tootsie's 2 thumbs down-

Pros: good Mac and Cheese

Cons: wait, tight establishment

First let me start by saying that I had a wonderful experience the service was good and fast. I ordered the Fried chicken wings which were the best I had in a very long time, the mac and cheese was excellent and the candied yams were wonderful. Everything had excellent flavor and the Iced should be bottled and sold in stores. I highly recommend this restaurant to whoever loves soul food and to anyone who's never had it but always wanted to try it....

Cons: the waiting was a liitle long but i quess that's because the food is that good

I recently went to Ms. Tootsies with 2 friends of mine. We heard good things about the restaurant but our experience wasn't a good one. First of all, it was really small so the tables were really close together. If you're claustrophobic, you don't want to go there. Also, because it's so small, we could barely have a conversation over all of the other conversations going on. It was extra loud. My one girlfriend and I wanted the whiting fish but they only had the talapia (both of which were on the menu). My other girlfriend wanted the seafood combination and they were out of that (also on the menu). Then one of us wanted a fountain soda which she was told they didn't have any. All they had to drink was the iced tea and water. Now this was early on a Friday evening (around 6:30), so we were really surprised to see they were out of so many things. The food we did order was good. It's just too bad we couldn't get what we really wanted.

We were a party of 5 visiting the restaurant from Maryland more than a 2 hr drive. All but 1 of us had eaten at Ms Tootsie more than once. We had bragged about the cuisine and were excited for her to try it. Found parking ok. Pure Luck. 15 mins wait time. Was cold outside, but luckily we drove so we waited in the car. There were people who were waiting outside. 1 wanted ribs, 2 wanted pork chops and 2 wanted turkey wings. Waitress arrived at table w/5 iced teas and introduced herself. We were going to order something to drink but thought we would drink what we thought were complimentary teas since NOONE had ordered anything. Ut oh, waitress informs us they have no ribs so she changed her order to pork chops. Ut oh, waitress returns to inform us that they now only have 1 pork chop dinner. 2 then changed theirs to chicken. Greens were tough, turkey tough, yams way too sweet. Check screwed up, and we were charged for 6 teas. Forget that we never ordered the 5 that arrived. Oh, and to top it all off..they were out of sweet potato cheesecake. Somehow they tried to rectify the check. It all was a very horrible experience. The bright spot... The Hostess is mad nice. I gave feedback to their website and I got a "thank you for your comments!" back. I hope that's an autoreply, because an apology is in order. Shame on u Keven.

Eating out at Ms. Tootsie's is more than just going out to dinner, it's "brotherly love" on a plate. The dining room is cozy yet chic, the staff are welcoming and attentive, and the food is delicious. My catfish was fried just right, and I could probably eat that mac and cheese once a week! 5 stars for Keven Parker and this gem of a restaurant.

OMG where to begin. The food was to die for chicken seasoned and fried to perfection, mac and cheese like no other so cheesy and good, and the greens um um the greens. Ms. Tootsie's has my grandma's cooking beat by far. I definitely recommend this place if your looking for great soul food and good service.

I won't say Ms. Tootsie's has the best soul food because nothing compares to home cooking. However, if you're in the mood for really good soul food that will leave you feeling stuffed, Ms. Tootsie's is the place to be. They have great sweet tea (iced tea) that they serve with a watermelon on it. I warn you, do not drink too much of this tea. This is the type of drink that will give a person diabetes on the spot...lol. Overall, the food is really good. The only negative in my opinion is the size of the place. It is very small so if you plan to go with a large group, do not do it. If you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night, do not do it. I haven't been there on a Sunday yet, therefore, I could not tell you what the wait is like. If they had a bigger restaurant, they would receive 5 stars from me.

In response to the individual who wished there were more locations...bad idea. Once it becomes a chain the quality of food is bound to detoriate and be equivalent to your common Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, etc.

Cons: Very small dining area. Not good for large groups. Don't go on Friday or Saturday nights.

RU sure you weren't at RBL? Ms. Tootie's cafe is excellent, but small. Tables are packed in tight, but i likeit. U can check out what the next table ordered to see if u want it. Catfish was great, not greasy & super cheesy mac n' cheese was flat-out amazing. Bring dessert home, u won't be able to finish it there. Just go and try it out 4 urself.

Ms. Tootsie's put us out on Friday night! Two very good friends of mine reserved Ms. Tootsie's this past Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) to have a joint birthday party. They had invited about 200 people through E-vite two weeks prior after it was confirmed, knowing that many friends and family would be in town for the holiday.
They arrived shortly before 9 pm to find that the lounge area was closed and obviously unstaffed. The manager told them that the catering division had an event off-site that evening, and deployed most of their staff there, including bartenders and the DJ. The manager had forgotten about their party. The one remaining bartender turned on the music and people began to arrive.I arrived shortly before 11 p.m. to a crowded lounge, about 60-70 people. There was a long wait for drinks because there was only one bartender, yet people were drinking. At 11:45 p.m., the DJ began playing several slow songs and we joked that they were trying to wind us down, like the clubs back in the day :) HOWEVER, just minutes later, Jenn and Dee informed all their MANY guests that they were told that the bar was closing at 12 MIDNIGHT. The manager claimed that they weren't making any money, and people weren't buying drinks. As word passed through the disbelieving crowd, we became slightly outraged. How does an establishment put OUT an organized socializing, professional gathering EARLY?!?!?!? At 12 midnight, we all became Cinderella and Cinderfella, and the lights were turned on. The music stopped. Dee's husband began to announce to the crowd that we should NOT support Ms. Tootsie's any longer, and the DJ turned the music back on to squelch his announcement. By 12:10, we were all out of the door. There were also patrons in the bar who were not a part of the birthday celebration who had to leave as well.

Please pass the word.

Great atmosphere. Best place to have melt-in-your-mouth soul food, but feel like you're "somewhere." Great people watching at first floor bar. Tip: get fried chicken and mac/cheese. Don't snack before you go, but do dress up-- you'll enjoy it.

Went for dinner and had to wait a half hour to eat. Went next door for a drink so it was no big deal. Smothered turkey chops and collards, mmmmmmmmmmm. Sweet tea is great and it comes in Ms. Tootsie bottle, but don't forget the lemon pound cake. Waitstaff was friendly, space a little tight. Was crazy busy, but worth the wait. You won't be sorry you did.

Keepin it simple: fantastic soul food in deluxe atmosphere. Fried chicken is the best hands down, mac & cheese is decadent and pound cake is sinful. Go. You won't regret it.

My first time at Ms. Tootsies....not so bad!!! I originally wanted to order the Fried Whiting, but they were out, so I chose the Talapia....which had no taste!!! Talapia, not seasoned at all....I also ordered the collard greens and candied yams....the collard greens were VERY GOOD and the yams were pretty good (just too much..too thick). The corn bread muffins were GREAT!! I tasted my boyfriends Fried Chicken...and it was SOOOO GOOOOD!!!! He also ordered the mac and cheese and cabbage, which were both pretty good. Ms. Tootsies is extremely small....but quaint!!! Oh, I also ordered the lemon pound cake for dessert....pretty good!! I will definitely visit Ms. Tootsies again!!!!!!!

Hi. I finally had the pleasure of ordering from the famous Ms.Tootsie's Soul Food Restaurant. I live in DE but work in PHL. The food looked and tasted fabulous. My concern is the space, the wait and where you must wait. I placed my food order at work. So right after work I went straight to Ms. Tootsie's to pick up my food. I noticed an older black couple was there and the woman had swollen ankles and a cane and the elderly man could barely stand. God bless them both. I think and truly believe the hostess should've been more observant of the patrons and immediately offered a chair even though your establishment is not equip for that type setting, as yet!!, but under those circumstances common courtesy etiquette should have been followed. I'm young. I sat on the curb in my dress work pants but for the elderly and disabled customers your team should be more on top of their game. Representing Ms. Tootsie's restaurant. You never know whose watching.
Oh by the way, the reason why I mentioned, ' YOUR TEAM ', right next store at the new Ms. Tootsie's Cafe, employees where there right in front conversing about ' whatever ' but never took notice to assist or suggest that this couple needs to be seated before they fall over!!!
They noticed me and spoke to me but never took that extra common courtesy to the elderly couple. I felt embarrassed. Speak to your hostess and staff and remind everyone individual work skills get the job done but a teams collective ethics and positive interests will make ALL shine together brightly.
Thxs Ms. Tootsie's
I got my eye on ya..^_^.. Tara Robinson from DE.

Ms. tootsie's is the spot. They have the best soul food i have ever had. I had the catfish which was to die for, and the macaroni and cheese, which would melt in your mouth and collard greens, which would make you want to hurt somebody. The cornbread is also amazing. and they give you like a water bottle but it has ms.tootsie's name on it and they have the best tea ever. It is sweet and just to die for. I want to go all the time.

Just came from Ms. T's RBL and ? no doubt ? still the best in the city! Chicken here is still my favorite. Small plate make sharing fun. And the parties they throw here are off the hook. Can't wait until next Party of the Year Nov. 3.

I have been to Ms. Tootsies several times, and I finally got to the lounge. At the bar the dj was playing the hottest songs, and my friends and I tried all kinds of drinks we never thought could get any sweeter. Milk chocolate TootsieTini's and the famous Tootsies sweet tea with a shot of rum! Upstairs, their dining room resembled any New York restaurant. You feel like your in your own concert looking around the room at local philly artist photos. Friendly servers suggested to go with our tastebuds. We started with Teddys Tenders and Whipped Yams, which I couldn't keep to myself. The menu was updated with Spicy Crab Cakes and Chicken and Waffles. I thought I had jet-setted to LA for a minute. We decided desert in the luxe lounge would be so hot! Again with the personal touches of local models captured on the walls, you feel like your in your own personal art gallery. Tasting down home soul food accompanied by high fashion decor. I can't wait to go back, the weather is heating up and its time to strut. The white lounge is a major spot for networking and mingling! We only came in for drinks but stayed the whole night. I was transported around the U.S., through Ms. Tootsies RBL- philly's newest hot spot!

4.26.07.I was visiting Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Cafe last week for Penn Relays. I am so glad I found this spot. The name says it all. A cozy cafe with the best soul food in the city. I had the sweet tea I heard about, and was instantly taken back to the lazy days of my childhood. Our table had such a variety of entrees, it is hard to pick my favorite. Fried Chicken and Catfish with; Cheesy Mac, Buttery Yams, Peppery Cabbage and cornbread! I wanted to curl up in the booth after a thick slice of Sweet Pototo Cheesecake. Incredible! Their food can't even compare to anyone or anywhere else. Don't tell my mother, someone cooks better than my grandmom. And my team also observed them donating to Dining out for life. It is good to find a restaurant not only with heart warming service and soul food, but sincerity in the endeavors for the community. I will be back next year even if my team doesn't come for the events. Ms. Tootsies has my vote for the best soul food in the city!

My husband and I live in Kansas City, MO and were in Philadelphia for vacation. We are always looking for a great soulfood restaurant and found Ms. Tootsie's and after seeing all the great reviews decided to try it. Boy were we disappointed! Maybe the other reviewers have not had good soul food because if they did they would know that Ms. Tootsie's is NOT it! First, it is in a back alley, the restaurant is about the size of a living room, so you're going to have to wait a while for them to call you on your cell phone when your table is ready. The food isn't at all what we expected. My husband had the catfish and he said one had seasoning, and the other one didn't the macaroni and cheese was good, but it tasted like Kraft Deluxe with shredded cheese baked on top. I had the fried chicken, which was over cooked, dry, and tasted like it was cooked in old grease. I tried the cabbage and rice with gravy, but I should have stuck with mac and cheese and yams! The cabbage was CRUNCHY, soulfood cabbage should be tender, and the rice had white gravy instead of brown, and the gravy had NO FLAVOR. The best part was the tea. I had the sweet potatoe pie and wasn't impressed with that either. If you are ever in Kansas City, MO and want some good tasting soul food, look up the Peach Tree. They have a buffet restaurant, so you can try a variety of things all you can eat for about $10 per person, and the food is great. You will be disappointed with Ms. Tootsie's if you've had good, authentic soul food before.

Having moved to the city a few weeks ago one the first things that I did was seek out some authentic down south cooking to remind me of home and ease my transition from rural Georigia to Philly. Well I found it! At Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe on South Street. The ambience of the restaurant was very welcoming and my server Dominique went well out of her way to explain the menu, keep my glass of Southern style sweet tea brimming, and ensure that I had an all around enjoyable experience. In fact the entire staff was helpful answering all of my questions and providing some tips for getting around the city from my condo on Columbus Boulevard. I can't wait to go back and try the fried whiting which was all gone by the time that I arrived last Friday evening, get some more of that awesome chessy cheese macaroni and cheese, and take home a slice of the lemon butter pound cake! I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone and anyone looking to get a taste of home: whether its good food or good old southern hospitality your'e longing for Ms. Tootsie's has it.

This is a great restaurant if you are trying to impress your mate, friends, or family members. My friend and I drove from Maryland on two different occassion just to eat at Ms. Tootsie's. It is hard to find a good soul food restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. The hour wait was okay with us because it was a nice summer night. Once we were seated the service was fast and great. I love the dim lights and hardwood floods as well as the color paintings. The ice tea is off the hook and the Mac and cheese and greens are to die for. I've told all of my friends in maryland about the retaurant. A must try!!!!!!!!!

Ms. Tootsie's has the best sides around. They have great mac and cheese, collard greens, black eyed peas, and the string beans are by far the tastiest I've ever eaten. The candied yams are to die for as well. The meals start with great cornbread muffins and they serve wicked tea here. The entrees get mixed reviews, though. The fried chicken seemed a bit meager in size and suffered from being in the fryer much too long. The bbq'd ribs were much better, but also seemed a tad dry. The sauce served with them was great, though. Smothered turkey wings were pretty good, and the chocolate cake for dessert tasted fresh and homemade. Unlike other reviews, we found the service to be excellent.

Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Restaurant recently opened their dining facility in the New RBL. The experience was off the chain. I started out with the Spicy Jumbo Crab Cakes for appetizers which were scrumptous. My dining partner enjoyed the Grilled Shrimp & Collard Greens. My entree was Smothered Turkey Chops along with the African Rice and Black Eyed Peas. Nothing can describe this meal. My dining partner the Chicken & Waffles. (Roscoe's better watch out). Of course you have all of that with the Cafe 3801 Famous Tropical Blend Ice Tea and your dining experience is complete. But of course I had to try the Red Velvet Cake. I'm hooked. The dining area in the RBL is so sheek and classy. Not your normal dining soul food experience. The Host and Hostesses were friendly and knowledgeable and the Wait Staff was on it. I'll definitely be back.
