WARNING: If you are looking for a gym in the Charleston area please steer clear of ESAC aka Eastshore. Is it convenient, yes, BUT they will treat you like crap even if you've done business there for 13+ years. Heaven forbid you ask someone a question and they will act like you are inconveniencing them and heaven forbid you smile at them and get anything but a dirty look in return. There are better, cleaner, operational gyms around. Time to put our money somewhere it's appreciated and be treated like a human being instead of a membership.

BE WARNED!! I??ve had nothing but problems with ESAC. At first it seemed like a good idea to join because my wife wanted something physical to do and they provided child care for a small fee. Shortly after joining though, they continually messed up our bill and I found myself on the phone for hours with the most incompetent people I??ve ever met. Additionally, their childcare play room stinks like urine because they??re never cleaned and our son came down with strep throat and ear infections multiple times as a consequence. I??ve tried to cancel the membership because we no longer have a contractual obligation but they make it next to impossible. Instead of having a streamlined process, you must mail in your request and it may take up to 3 months to cancel the membership. I put the account on hold while trying to accomplish this because they told me it would only charge $10 a month, but later found out they lied and actually putting the account on hold extends your contract 3 months. They charge way too much for the worst service and mediocre equipment. If you??re thinking about joining, seriously think twice. I??m in the military, and I can honestly say I??ve never felt like I??ve been taken advantage of so much before in my life. Recommendation: save your money, go elsewhere, and hopefully put these people out of business.

The East Shore Athletic Clubs are the best gyms I have ever worked out at and I have been to quite a few gyms in my day. The Staff is beyond Great! They are always so friendly and so willing to help. My favorite part of the gyms are the group fitness classes. I love getting into those Body Pump Classes and getting a great work out. With 12 locations there is always one easy to get to. Like every gym they get dirty from time to time but I always see the staff cleaning and making sure the equipment is staying nice. I would say that if you are not a member of East Shore then you are missing out.

N. Charleston facility is a "Dump", stay away. The shower area is horrible, old, never clean. In the summer it is so hot, no fan in the locker room and AC is kept at a minimum.

Having so few options in Mt. Pleasant, I reluctanly signed up for ESAC. I ran..not walked away after my required year..I have lived all over the US and only since the 90's has a gym I've been a member of (LA to Atlanta) had a year long contract with only death or move as the way out! That should have been my first red flag....but alas...I was desperate.
The staff never..never greets you. There is no desire to learn their members' names. I never found a bathroom stall that actually locked (all the inside locks are broken!). The lockerroom is hairy scarey...the weightroom dirty....hum..oh yea..you have to pay extra for spin class (say What?!?!?)
After the long...long ...LONG year of being a member..yippee the term is up..but ONLY after you get a certified return recpt. letter to them...written in blood. It is utterly ridiculous to think I have to go the post office to officially end my year!
I say any other option is better.. if only there was one nice gym in Mt. P..it would close ESAC down in a blink (once all the members made it to the post office to get their certified letters to them)

This is a horrible gym.I joined after doing research online prior to moving to town. A big mistake. The customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. The management could care less about its members and it shows!. The staff is rude, the facilites are dirty, the lockerooms are disgusting! Anyone writing a good review of this gym has either never belonged to a good gym or part owner of this poor excuse for a gym.

The Hanahan ESAC is supposedly 24/7-the key to get in works sporadically; they are so incompetent! And the machines are filthy.

I'm a very long term member of this club and have seen many transitions over the years. I think the staff is great and helpful and friendly.

The club overall just stinks. It is down on it's heels and really really shabby. I think having carpet throughout the club is a big problem. The place reeks particularly downstairs. The locker rooms are just unbelievable in how nasty they are. For as much as we are paying per month there should be a better return on our money.

With the recent influx of new members absolutely no thought was put into where they would all park. Parking can be at a premium anyway and now it is nearly impossible. I wish that the owner had put some thought in to the upkeep and maintenance of this club before he went about sucking up all of the other clubs into his web. The appearance and maintenance of the Johnny Dodds club is shameful. It used to be a "flag ship" facility and now it is more the "red headed step child" of his collection of clubs. It would be nice if the owner, Kent, could be bothered to make an appearance every now and then. It would be even better if he would spend some of his money to do something about the club. It is very disappointing.

I recently became a member of the Mt. Pleasant ESAC location because my gym closed and I couldn't be happier. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating which made the transition so much smoother. The class offerings and equipment is great, over all I am very pleased with ESAC!

Also my daughter enjoys the child care so much that she asked me the other day to go to the gym, talk about motivation!

It's not the only pool in town, yet the memories keep me returning...A shout out to management:
PLEASE Re-Think Pool Policy & Pricing & Keep CURRENT - Mt. Pleasant- Pool classes & schedules posted at the front desk and on-line. Twice this month i've called /received Incorrect Pool Information- Yikes!
As a 20 year member of the Mt. Pleasant pool location, this club was has seen a more organized staff and a Fairly Priced Pool Membership ...when you could join as a POOL MEMBER ONLY. Currently they have a 'pool classes only' membership, the catch- you may NOT swim laps??? If anyone else agrees, please leave your suggestion with the club management for review. Thanks
And
Appears they have just about cornered owning the club market which may (or hopefully may not) pan out poorly for all consumers in the long run ... Or speak now or forever hold your peace ;D Disappointed Long-Term Local Member Hoping ESAC Will Re-Vamp Mt. P's Pool Policy

The manager at Mt. P is the nicest guy and so attentive, and the class instructors were really engaging. I was used to having such a variety in DC gyms to choose from, but the customer service here can't be beat. My only complaint would be no steam shower, but they told me I could take a chair outside whenever I wanted. Good folks. I'm looking forward to becoming a member.

This gym/company is absolutely disgusting. They do not care at all about their gyms, members, or employees. They are concerned with nothing else but draining every dime they can from their member and draining every ounce of spirit from their managers, workers and trainers. If you are someone that would prefer to do business with a company with a soul - run far, far away from ESAC

There is always a "wait list" in the childcare room so you can not make your fitness class. I waited there with my son this morning for 45 minutes until I finally got fed up and left. I ran out of time! There were 3 other upset parents as well. The childcare fee is extra per month and seems difficult to even get your child in there. There needs to be more child care workers in the nursery to help out. There was only one girl in there to watch the children so there was a limited amount of children allowed at one time. And...there were other people standing behind the front desk or in their offices.....I am wondering why they did not go into the nursery to help so the customers can have their workout? Afterall, we are all paying for the childcare and the workout! I am frustrated that I had to leave without working out while other staff members were standing around or sitting at their desks. Where was the athletic club's teamwork? It appears they do not care about their customers!

I'm not sure what that "L J." person was talking about because I see things to be quite the opposite. I will concede that there are a handful of snobby members but hell, you'll find that anywhere. The facility is great!

What makes ESAC different for me is the staff. These are some of the nicest people you will come across. The personal trainers in particular are incredibly awesome. This is the first gym that I've actually joined and at first I was overwhelmed with all the equipment. I knew what fitness goals I wanted to achieve but coming up with a map to get there is what was throwing me off. I began working with a personal trainer that they have on staff and this guy actually is a serious and competitve bodybuilder. That alone intimidated me just a little bit because I knew what I could lift is pathetic compared to what he's pumping on a daily basis. But let me tell ya, nothing could be further from the truth. He said the amount of weight doesn't matter so long as you're in proper form... then you working on increasing the amount of lbs that you work with. Oh and something I really liked about his training regimen? Each training session was an hour long and every single workout was different.

Lastly, it costs me $50 a month. Had I not signed a 2yr contract it would have cost me $54 a month.

East Shore is a fantastic fitness center in the Charleston area. They've got clubs in Mt. P, Downtown and west ashley. I don't know exactly where the last reviewer went, but there are almost no bodybuilders at east shore, they market mostly to de-conditioned people interested in group fitness and cardiovascular workout. If anything, they cater less to the true body builder, since the free weight areas are smallish. Great group fitness programs and instruction, including Les Mills programs and Spin. In addition, the cost of membership is NOT "almost 100 dollars." It's 54 a month for access to every east shore in the city. But, hey, that's more than half of 100, so whatever.

I FOUND THIS CLUB TO BE VERY INTIMIDATING. MANY ARE IN UPSCALE WORKOUT OUTFITS, AND ALOT OF BODY BUILDERS. IF THIS DOESNT BOTHER YOU THEN THEY HAVE A NICE FACILITY. A GREAT POOL/SAUNA AND QUITE A BIT OF EQUIPMENT.
I PERSONALLY DID NOT FEEL WELCOME HERE. IT IS ALSO VERY EXPENSIVE! ALMOST $100/MONTH
