PLEASE TRY IT FOR YOURSELF! The food is phenomenal. Most authentic Italian food you will find in the states. Heavenly gelato, amazing cheeses, ugh and the wine! Please just try it, service is relative. When you read about bad service you

Heard good things about the food, but couldn't tolerate the place for more than 10 seconds To start with, no ambience whatsoever, but it gets much worse. Upon entering, we were serenaded by a screeching child whose parent ( and I use that

I was so excited when Porta Via Italian Kitchen opened last summer on White Bridge Road. My wife and I had been dreaming of a great new gourmet pizza place on our side of town ever since having a real neapolitan pizza in San Francisco's

I love the wine selection here. A lot of great wines at a reasonable price! A nice American selection plus some great French choices!

I was surprised to see such a selection in a small place. I thought the food was just what I wanted . .

I will tell you that Porta Via has the very best gelato I have ever had. I've wanted love gelato for a long time, but usually find it doesn't live up to my expectations - until I tried it at Porta Via. It is creamy, flavorful and the perfect consistency. My favorite is the Blood Orange flavor, but the others are good too.

As for the meals, they are good. Is the food the best Italian food I've ever had? No. But it is good.

The drawback here is the service. It is mediocre at best, and often poor. I have never really felt welcome, like a paying customer should feel. I've always felt like an interruption to their work, and I've witnessed the staff treating others the same way. Once when I was there giving a to-go order, the server walked off halfway through ringing my order up and never came back to finish the order. Instead, he took care of numerous other customers. She never explained why she walked off or warned me she was leaving me in the middle of my order, she just stopped. Tonight I tried calling in my order. I phoned them 3 times in the space of a half hour and they never once answered. I ended up driving across town anyway, hoping they were open, and when I let them know something must be wrong with their phone, they said they don't answer it when they are busy.

If you are too busy to answer the phone, you just might be understaffed. And to basically say a customer calling in is less important than any other customer is frankly offensive. The staff and management all give off an air that they just really don't care if you the customer are there or not.

I don't see myself going back - at least not in the near future. Maybe a long time from now I'll get a craving for that Blood Orange Gelato and wonder why I haven't been there in a while, forgetting the service issue. Maybe by then they will care just a little and treat customers with a little more courtesy. One can hope.

Pros: Fantastic gelato, good food.

Cons: Mediocre to poor service

this pizza reminds me of pizza I have had in Italy. Wood fired with fantastic selection of toppings! The gelato was alright, but the food was great. Only thing is watch the amount of toppings you add, because it can get pricey!!!
