First of all the spinach was dirty. It tasted like dirt and was extermely grainy, they didn't not wash the spinach. Second, the Gyoza tasted like some cheap store brand and the sushi itself was not good...That brings us to our last issue. It was definitely over priced. By a lot.

Cons: the food and definitely the price!

I won't say this is the best sushi in town (I'm partial to 713 and Azuma, personally), but the food was good, and the ambiance was nice. The prices were definitely steep, but fortunately my boyfriend and I were there for happy hour, so we made it out for under $25 - not bad. The only thing that put us off slightly was the owner standing outside with his friends as we came to the door. I felt like they might start a fight with us if we didn't go inside, but they were in fact all very polite. One other thing that slightly annoyed me was the bowl for the edamame was piping hot ... was wondering if they were maybe microwaved. Regardless, the food was good, the atmosphere was lovely, and the happy hour prices were reasonable. At regular menu prices, you'd be hard pressed to get out of there for under $50, so I'd recommend you try it out for happy hour.

Just ate here last night on a whim with my wife and her colleague. We like to try new places in our area. And we have been to many Sushi places all over Houston. I also travel internationally for work, so I know a few things about international/authentic food. So it really concerns me when I see many of the previous reviews that this is the "best sushi", "amazing", "new standard", or 4+ stars. Either they have not had much sushi before, this is the first sushi place they've been to, a friend of the owner, or IT IS the best sushi they have had so far.

Message to Management/Owners: Please do not take this as a "bashing" or hating. I'd just like for you to know my honest opinion. As a person that respects restaurant owners, there is nothing more I want is great success for you (and your food to be outstanding). So maybe you can take some of my opinions for your consideration for some improvements.

I will start off with the pros: good decore, great service, good presentation of food, the owners/management seem very nice. Sauteed veggies was yummy (spinach/mushrooms).

cons:
-The seeweed for the sushi was very chewy, seems like it was an inferior brand or not prepared correctly. It should be more crisp, this makes a big difference in enjoyment and flavor.
-Price is too expensive for the quality of food. If I'm paying for that much, I expect it to be terrific/outstanding. I could have gotten much better sushi for less.
-All 3 entrees were bland. Although it wasn't terrible, it was below average for us.

Honestly, of all the sushi restaurants in the same south west area, this would be at the bottom of the list of us.

Granted this place still seems new (under or around 1 year?), there could be improvements. We hope it will.

I live nearby, so it was no brainer for me to try out the new sushi restaurant SHIMAKO. The decor is fantastic as is the food. I felt like I wasn't even in Houston (which is a good thing) The sushi was fresh and flavorful and the speciality rolls were unbelievable. I highly recommend the Shaky roll and the tuna tar tar..oh and the black cod. The waiter I had was prompt and friendly. I will definitely be back again.

Expensive. Thin, small slices of sushi served. Bland sushi. I was disappointed with the poor quality of sushi, especially if it is going to be charged at a high price.

Very good Sushi, the place is very neat, fresh looking, good quality and price to meet its qualities.
My hobby is to visit new places and give my opinion to the public, the place has very high standards for Sushi and very creative presentation. I enjoy eating there at least once a week ! Try it, highly recommanded!

I eat at SHIMAKO Sushi AT LEAST twice a week. I am very picky with sushi and have tried almost every place in the city of Houston and SHIMAKO is the best place by far! Great environment, very nice people and wonderful service, and extra fresh food. Great place for casual dining during the day and at night the mood is set very nice for a romantic dinner. Prices are reasonable too! Sushi anywhere is never cheap. I more than highly recommend SHIMAKO Sushi.

This restaurant tries to make up for poor sushi with a nighclub atmosphere. the bar will keep this place open.....but the sushi won't help. It is inferior sushi....extremely overpriced and a disaster of management.

Talk about a bad business!

I go into this place and it is loud. It's pretty, but LOUD.

Then, a few minutes later, I am seated at a sushi bar that can hold about 5 people. Then, the sushi rolls......$25.00?!?!?!?!? for a roll?!?!?!??!

Go some place else. This place is horrible.

You just have to try the food and judge! Fresh, clean, neat, and trendy! This place is a must try restaurant in Houston, the food is unbelievably good with a very creative presentation. It is not made for the general public, only for people who appreciate good Sushi, and good music. It is not an average restaurant, this palce knows what food standards are!
Love it ! Love it !Love it!
GOOD JOB ON THE FOOD AND DECORATION!!!!!!!

I have tried this restaurant out a couple of times and it's just not good. I love sushi, but it has to be good. Also, this place is way too expensive when there are better sushi restaurants at better prices in Houston.

My husband and I go to Shimakos a lot and we love every minute of it!! The wait staff has always been amazing - always willing to answer questions and the bartender will make ANY drink you want, the atmosphere and one of a kind - great lighting, amazing music, the decor is fantastic, Great Sushi - I don't like sushi much and when I first came there, Marc (the owner) took time to tell me all about the sushi, which ones to try and they all came out wonderful! I now eat sushi all the time!!!

The think I like most about this place is the people! We live in busy Westheimer and have been to plenty of food joints - Shimakos has a friendly atmosphere that is hard to find! It is not only to my husband and I and our friends that we bring in but I've seen the owner of the place talk to guests like they are his best friends. He is very personable and makes you feel like family while you are there! That is hard to find and makes any mistakes worth it! I'd rather pay $200 and feel welcome than go pay $50 for horrible customer service.

This is a new business, sometimes a little slow, but great atmosphere and on Saturday nights - great to go and sit with friends a have a few drinks (they bring in an amazing DJ). I have no complaints really - the food has always been great, even the non-sushi dishes. The desserts are amazing!!! They just added a new sushi dessert and it is to die for - I love it! The variety of drinks is awesome - marc will make anything you want! The atmosphere is incredible and romantically ciche!

To start off with, when you walk in it is a very cool looking place. After that, it is all over. This place is not ready to be open yet. They have a lot of issues to work out. Food was going to the wrong place. We saw our food go to the wrong place and the people at the other table told the guy it was not their food, but he assured them it was. Once our food finally came out, again, it was OK. It was way over priced for quality. We ordered gyoza (potstickers) and I could almost swear it is the same stuff I get at Costco and cook at home. There are better places, lots of them. If you want a sushi place with low quality food and worse service, this place is for you. But if you want good sushi and service, look elsewhere.

Since moving down the street from this restaurant I haven't had sushi anywhere but here. The service is great, the food is FABULOUS, and they have a great wine selection. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and having a nice chat with the Marc the bartender. He can help with your choices on dishes as well as wine.

Started loving to eat sushi in 2 years ago,and increased my love for it during my first visit to SHIMAKO.
Shimako sushi bar bring us some of houston best and hottest dining and drinking destinations...You have to give props where they're due for that kind of longevity, popularity and staying power they definitely know how to wow the unwowable.
SHIMAKO doesen't claim being the most authentic japanese cuisine, but they do assure a great experience with fresh fish, creative far and great atmosphere.Shimako is great for a date night,a large group,a girls night out,you name it.Fortunately for us their versatility extends well past the appealing decor of candles, lighting, sound features and artful paints...the food is just as engaging,
I've never had a dish here that wasn't well thought out, tasty and cleverly presented, there are a few of SHIMAKO must trys:
-Spicy Yellow Tail Mango (yellowtail, chili sauce, mango puree)
-Shimako Roll (lobster, crunch, motoyaki, wrapped in avocado,5 fishes)
-Sky Diver Eel (salmon, crab, eel wrapped in avocado)
And for the non-adventurous sushi-phobes they have a fabulous menu of amazing entrees that venture so far off from"Beef Negimaki" that it almost can tempt the biggest sushi lover away from the raw bar.
Well in the end i can only say that it's a must visit place.

Looking at some of the reviews, I have to wonder if they went to the right place.

I went Friday just in time to catch happy hour. There were couples outside enjoying sushi and drinks. I was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful decor inside. We chose to sit at the Sushi Bar, and were rewarded with an incredible display of skillful knife-work of Beto, the chef. He was a pleasure to chat with while we enjoyed our sashimi. It was very fresh and was about the best i ever tasted.

The sake selection was outstanding. The Tuna Tartare is a must have!

The atmosphere was like that of a country club, but without the dues or the stiffness. It was very relaxed and the music was refreshing and upbeat. This was unlike most sushi bars in town. The prices may be a bit higher, but i feel it was definitely worth it.

The server was wonderful from the moment they opened the door as we walked up, until the opened it again as we left. Very prompt and any need was met with a smile and touch of class.

I highly recommend to anyone wanting an outstanding experience, celebrating a special event, or as a wonderful date spot.

I practically live at 713 down the way, but may have found a new home.

I don't have to say much about this place in order to give you a good idea of what to expect.

Loud place - radio, TV playing at the same time. Echos everywhere - poorly constructed.
Can only seat about 45 people.
Sushi bar seats 5 people. 5 people!
One sushi roll costs $25.00..what an ego!
Oh.....and they have seats outside - a total of two - and you can't eat sushi there.

ha ha

Skip this place. What a disaster.

Shimako Sushi Bar is a unique sushi place, where you can enjoy fresh and delicious fish and treat yourself with a choice of sake or wine or any kind of drink you want.It became my favorite sushi bar, and every time I experience a new item on the menu, wait until you try the Unagi or the Hamachi Kama, fantastic! or even the beef and chicken teriyaki.
