We bought a new condo this June and my husband got a Plummer to fix the furnace/AC unit. When the winter came, even we had to keep the furnace running for 24hours, the temperature could not go above 70F when outside was in the 30F. The air did not feel warm out of the registers. I did not have any experience with forced air but when I got my November heating bill which was $451.00, I told myself that I had to get someone to check my furnace. I posted request online at QualitySmith and Steven Nguyen was the first one to contact me. I asked about his charge. $125.00 for the first hour. We made an appointment and he came the second morning. He was later for nearly an hour. I had to call him to confirm if he was coming. He told me that he was trapped in traffic which was reasonable considering it was around 9:30AM, the morning rush hour. He came and used a small tool to detect the wind temperature and speed out of one register. He told me the level was lower than it supposed to be. He checked my furnace and found out that it was 60,000BTU. He asked the size of my house. I told him it was around 1400sqft. He told me that the BTU of my furnace was not enough for the size of my place and I need a new furnace with 80,000BTU. He would charge $3000.00 for installing a new Trane furnace. He told me that Trane was a far better furnace than my current Goodman furnace. He also said that I could not install a high efficiency one because my furnace is in the closet. I told him that I had to do some research first before I made a decision. I paid him for what he asked for $125.00. I went to read about furnace online and found that Trane does not have that kind of reputation to be evaluated as better than Goodman furnace. Goodman furnace has a 10year warranty compared to Trane's 5 year warranty. Several days later, an Alan from Pro-Air and heating came to my place to give me a free evaluation. He agreed with Steven that I need to install a new furnace and he would charge me for $2300.00 for a new Payne furnace. However, Alan explained to me that I could not install a high efficiency furnace was not because my furnace is in closet(reason from Steven Nguyen) but because a high efficient furnace requires different tubing which would not be approved by my condo association. When Alan left, the air out of my registers became very warm for 10-15 minutes but Alan said that he did not touch anything. I went to read more info about furnace maintenance and decided to find a Goodman dealer who would be more interested in repair than installing a new one. I called several companies and talked to them and asked for the price. On December 20, 2010 after talking to the owner of Costal heating and air conditioning in Quincy, I made an appointment to let their technician to come to my place the next day morning around 9:00-9:30AM. That night Boston had the first snow and I was worried that the heating technician might not show up for the appointment. I called the company at 9:06AM to see if they would come. I was told that they would call me back. A moment later, I saw a van with Costal Heating and Air conditioning showed up in front of my place. The technician Tony called me to ask me where he could park his van. I was very impressed. He came into my houses and removed his shoes. He checked the furnace. At the beginning he thought the heat exchanger was not working ideal and might be the problem. That would require a new furnace. I insisted if he could open the blower compartment to check the blower motor and belt. He told me that require too much work because the way my furnace was installed. He then decided to open the front cover to check my AC unit. Once he touched the tubes connecting to the AC unit, he told me that my air conditioner was running. I could not believe myself. He asked me where was my thermostat and the menu. Luckily I found the installation menu right away and in a minute he told me that the lines were connected wrong on my thermostat. Every time I turned on the heater, the AC was turned on as well. The hot air from the heater was cooled down first before entering every room of my places. Once he switched the line on the thermostat, I got hot air immediately out of the registers. That explained why I got a gas bill of $451.00 with an unexplained electricity bill jump from $80.00 per month to $240.00 in November. Ever since then my place has been very warm no matter how cold outside. My furnace is working perfectly fine and 60,000BTU is definitely good enough for my place. I am really happy that I contacted Costal. It was really a Christmas gift for me. If I have any future heating problem, I will contact Costal but not Steven Nguyen.
