.

I hired Jerome Kurtz to paint the exterior of my home (stucco w/ wood trim) and stain my deck and porch. Mr. Kurtz did not properly prepare the house for painting. Neither power washing nor cleaning debris with a brush was done prior to start. I had vines growing on my house which he tore down, but he did not remove the suckers or the vine pieces that remained. He painted directly over them. He also painted directly over the "dust bunnies" that had accumulated on the stucco over time. He did not properly scrape and sand the window trim, nor did he properly prime it. You can see through the new paint to where the old paint had peeled and cracked, and the new paint is already separating from the wood where he didn't prime (2 months after he painted). He splattered paint all over the freshly stained porch, and only scraped it off and restained after several requests. He also got stain on the freshly painted house and did not cover it until he was reminded several times. The old paint he did scrape off (possibly lead-contaminated since my house is over 100 years old) ended up in my garden, my yard, my driveway, and in the space between the door and the deck. He also splattered fresh paint on the A/C unit, the fence, the driveway, the stepping stones under my faucet, and left a trail of it on the sidewalk. Mr. Kurtz requested the balance of the payment prior to completing the job, despite his contract stating "Balance due upon completion and customer satisfaction". He also charged $140 above what he had quoted in his contract. When I sent a certified letter to him requesting a refund and listing all of my complaints, he came by with his wife to look at what I was unhappy with. His wife agreed with most of the things I pointed out, and they started arguing and swearing at each other. This went on for approximately 20 minutes. He came back the following day and made a half-hearted attempt to fix some of the problems. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but he did not respond to them so they have listed it as unresolved. Since he wasn't listed in BBB until I complained, they have given him a B+ rating for only having one complaint. Please don't let that rating fool you. If you are thinking about hiring Mr. Kurtz, you are more than welcome to contact me. I have lots of pictures that I would be more than happy to email you.
