Very shady and non-transparent business dealings and my own stupidity in trusting this contractor sum up my experience. He didn't use a contract and wanted $4000 up front, in cash, only cash, and right away. I realize now this was stupid. No contract means I am left with a great deal to do on my own. All cash up front leaves me with no leverage. All I have in writing is our texts and emails about all of this.

He started building my deck within days of our last conversation. Two days later, my neighbors threatened to report me for illegal construction. My contractor had not alerted me that I needed a permit and when I raised the issue, he insisted one wasn't required because it was low and my yard is large. This was totally wrong.

He left me to do all the work in getting a permit, and he was no help, even hindered the process. Even with the explicit instructions I gave him and the availability of a comprehensive DC deck guide from the government, he didn't have an clear understanding as to the application procedures, so I had to figure it all out myself, and he couldn't seem to draw the plans correctly, which needed to be done on separate documents in separates ways, or give me the right number of copies required. He wanted to charge me $100 for architectural plans. Each of the many times I went to the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs the people there were very surprised that he didn't get a permit as part of his work, didn't get one, and how uninformed and unhelpful he was.

I spent a lot of money, and hours over days of time and lost work dealing with this, and it held up the deck by a good month.

Now the deck is built and he won't paint or seal it in any way unless I pay him another $450. I had to go get the paint myself, when I don't drive or own a car, so that was hard enough, and now I'm left with all this work, too.

So the deck is unsealed for the time being. Its just raw wood. Basically, he is not finishing the work I paid him to do. I can't use the deck until I find time to paint it myself. I have no more cash to give after the $4000 in cash that I paid this man. Because of him, this got dragged out for over a month and we lost the cool spring weather, so this now gets to be in 90+ degree weather, too.

He was supposed to repair and replace my gates. He was originally referred to me by Service Magic some time ago for another project (thank goodness I did not hire him for that huge project). This project, he mentioned, would take 2 days. He worked a full day and, I feel, rushed the job. Majority of the work was completed. I will not hire for any other project. Proceed with caution.

DO NOT HIRE THIS GUY!!! EVERY FEAR YOU HAVE OF CONTRACTORS IS TRUE WITH HIM!!! Eric Sivak was referred to me by Service Magic for a renovation project. I wanted a 10' wall removed between my kitchen/dining room, drywall ceiling replaced in living room/kitchen/dining room, cabinets and appliances re-located, plumbing re-located, and recessed lighting installed. Eric's quote was $6,800 and he estimated 3 days to complete the job. He showed up and worked a full day with his brother to remove the wall and ceiling. In doing so, he created a very big mess and caused damage to trim molding, appliances, and walls. He did NOT clean any of the mess. After waiting 3 days for him to return to condinue work he showed up daily for a few hours at a time. The plumber he contracted clogged my pipes and returned 3 days later, after I hounded Eric, to clear them. Eric's work is substandard, slow, messy, and incomplete. He is deaf which makes communicating an inconvenient challenge. The work ended up taking 3 weeks and went almost $3,000 above his quote. He is rude, slow, non-responsive, and unprofessional. I would NEVER hire him to do work for me again and I urge anyone to look elsewhere for their home repairs and projects.

Eric was extremely professional, fast and did an excellent job. Moreover, he went above and beyond the job requested and assisted in repairing a few other wood issues. He came prepared and completed the job as requested. I would highly recommend him and plan to use him again!

Thorough and trustworthy. I was particularly impressed that Contractor made a return trip to address a small issue to ensure that I was completely satisfied.
