I recently adopted a six week old pit bull puppy. After having him at home for 4 days, my pup started getting very sick. Throwing up constantly, frequent diarrhea, and a complete loss of appetite. Immediately, I looked up the nearest vet available in the south Austin area and VCA Tanglewood appeared with generally good reviews. Upon arriving at the vet, the staff was indifferent towards my sick pup. I guess it was because I came in a half hour before closing time. Dr. Stried examined my pup, who threw up after his belly was examined. Dr. Stried deemed x-rays necessary. After the pup was x-rayed, Dr. Stried pulled me aside and explained what he saw in the x-rays and he openly said he knew for a fact my pup did not have parvo, but rather a foreign object in his abdomen. He was adamant against testing for parvo. He concluded by saying that my pup would need a $2,500 surgery or else he would die, but that he could under no circumstances do the surgery because my pup was too young. Through out the whole visit, Dr. Stried seemed almost clueless and couldn't offer any words of comfort. At the same time, I was trying to avoid bumping into the rest of the staff who were busy mopping floors, and cleaning table tops, rushing to leave work. I left the clinic in tears, feeling hopeless. The following day, I visited another clinic to get a second opinion as my pup's condition was worsening. Here, my pup tested positive for parvo and was quickly treated. He is now recovered, but I am still so upset that I ever trusted VCA and their incompetent staff with the life of my little pup. If you want your pets to live, DO NOT take them to this vet.

As a new patient I took my 12 year old kitty in for an exam and to schedule a teeth cleaning a couple of months ago. As a new patient I receive a ""new patient"" voucher.\r\nI told them about his gums being a bit red and wanted his teeth cleaned. \r\n\r\nThe doctor glanced at his front teeth and gave me a what was to be two-weeks of antibiotics. She did not check his heartbeat or temperature. He only got weighed.\r\n\r\nWhen I arrived at the pharmacy I found the perscription was for four-weeks, so twice the time and twice the expense they had assured me at the vets.\r\n\r\nI called the doctor back to check on the length of time I was to give my kitty the antibiotics, and she said yes, it was for a month, not two weeks. \r\n\r\nI debated returning and scheduled an appointment recently with another vet for his teeth cleaning. The night I scheduled the appointment my kitty suddenly passed away from what my previous vet explained sounded like a stroke caused by a clot breaking loose from his heart. It was a terrible thing to watch, but he was at least in my arms and not alone.\r\n\r\nI'm not saying if Tanglewood would have noticed anything odd with his heart if they would have listened to it. Would a clot develop within a couple of months that would have had the same outcome, even if they had listened? I don't know and nothing will bring him back anyway.\r\n\r\nI found our experience at Tanglewood unprofessional, unthorough and insensitive. They continuously called sent notices about his shouts and did inquire once how he was doing. I honestly felt dollars meant more than care. \r\n\r\nI just receive a message from Dr. Abbot at Tanglewood after placing a call to them earlier explaining what had happened. She did not leave any mention of our loss, just her name and number with a happy tone in her voice. Did she receive my reason for calling, or does her bedside manner need work?\r\n\r\nI would have serious reservations taking my animals there, but judge for yourself if you do.

I have been boarding my pup Dana at VCA Tanglewood for about two years now. Shannon and Sara make sure that Dana has the most loving and caring home away from home. I live in far north Austin and make the trip that far just because I am assured genuine care, affection, quality, and peace of mind. To give you a very concrete example: Dana *jets* to the door and wags her tail incessantly when I drop her off, and when I have picked her up, she has literally made a u-turn, followed Sara back, and *not* want to come home with me. I am 100% serious!! =D \r\n\r\nDana has also had all her medical care at VCA Tanglewood with either Dr. Streid or Dr. Abbott for the same time as I have been boarding her. I love them both--they are extremely professional and patient (Dana can wiggle a lot!). Both Dr. Streid and Dr. Abbott call when they say they will call, and make absolutely sure all your questions are answered. \r\n\r\nAs for the staff at the desk and elsewhere, they are *always and without exception* courteous, prompt, receptive, and cheerful. I have come to know them by name. \r\n\r\nI CANNOT rave enough about VCA Tanglewood, and would almost bet money that you will be happy giving them your business, and, more importanly, placing your baby in their care. =) \r\n\r\n~Helena

Pros: Oh, almost everything--see below!

Cons: Far, but that's just for me :) Not open Sundays.

Our dog Fox is very wary of new people especially vets. When we arrived at vca tanglewood the staff was very friendly and after a couple of minutes we were escorted into one of their rooms. Shortly thereafter in walked Dr. Stried and immediately he went to the treat jar and won Fox over by giving him a few of them. I was so impressed at how patient he was with us and our shy dog. A few months after our first visit we noticed Fox limping and brought him in. Dr. Stried said that he would need surgery and so we made an appointment. A few weeks after the surgery the band that was put in during the surgery broke and we were afraid he was going to need another surgery which meant another surgery bill. When we brought him in Dr. Stried said he indeed would need another surgery but that because it was the band that broke he wouldn't charge us for the procedure. There aren't many doctors I know of who are honest about when something they did didn't work out and compensate by fixing it for free. That is the type of vet Dr. Stried is and we are so lucky that he's our dogs doctor. In addition at his office they do a pet of the day each day and the winner receives a fun doggy goodie bag. Fox won once and I think it is such a cute idea and a great way to show appreciation for customers. Needless to say for the last two years he has continued to be our dogs vet and everytime we have an appointment we are extremely pleased with the service we receive. We recently added a blue weim to our family and he too is a fan of Dr. Strieds. In addition everytime we have brought either of our dogs in for something the day after our visit someone always calls to follow up and make sure everything is going well. I would recommend VCA Tanglewood to anyone looking for a vet.

Pros: Friendly, professional staff. Never had to wait more than 5 mins. Very Clean.

Cons: Can't think of any

Need a vet in the FarFar South Side?
Good service. Helpful, friendly staff. The young vet is knowledgeable and seems to know alot about each specific breed.
I find it to be priced accordingly and don't feel the same complaints others had.
First time visitors can printout a coupon online for $25 Off.

Well, we had a rough start on the telephone. My cat needed to be seen asap and they put me on hold. OK, no problem. It was 6:20 and this was the only place still open (until 7pm). The man asked for my number to call me back. I was getting nervous and decided to head for the emergency vet. On my way there VCA called me back. It was now 6:40. They agreed to see my cat and we headed there instead. The vet saw us very quickly. The staff was friendly, especially the Vet himself. (Except my kids didn't think so when the vet asked which one of them needed the shot). LOL. Long story short...facilities were very clean. Staff was friendly and they took my cat (not a previous client) 15 minutes before closing. I think I've found my new vet. It was $50.50 (competitive) for the exam fee. The antibiotic shot was $65.55 (yikes, but it was a shot and I don't have to trick my cat into taking any pills for 10 days). Also, all in all cheaper than the emergencey vet I think.

Pros: Vet was great and they saw us on short notice right before closing, very clean!!!

Cons: maybe the receptionist guy was having a bad day?

If you want to get your money's worth for veterinary service, don't take your pet to this clinic. I paid $60 to wait 20 minutes in the examination room with a nervous cat for an incomplete checkup. The doctor took his weight, gave him a couple of shots and that was it. He didn't check Gizmo's teeth, heartbeat, feel his abdomen for tumors, or check his ears. It was rushed, impersonal and not worth my time or money. The vet who serviced Gizmo was robotic and showed no interest in my cat, which I take very personally. \r\n\r\nSo if you want your animal to receive the best care, do not take him to Tanglewood Animal Hosipital.

We were disappointed with the care our dog received here. We feel like we should have been given more information regarding the health of our animal. The regular vet seems knowledgeable, but not super friendly and doesn't tale the time to explain details. We actually like the "substitute vet" better. I think they care more about making money than providing the best care for animals.I would say this place is okay for routine pet care, but I would go elsewhere if you have specific health needs for your animals.

I first went to VCA Tanglewood Animal Hospital when I moved down the street and got my cat Makayla. She was having eye problems and sneezing a lot. It seemed as if she was always sick ever since I brought her home from the human society. I showed up and they were very welcoming and inviting. I did not know what to expect when I went to go visit this place. I loved the doctors. They were very friendly and just thought my cat was a beauty. Makayla had such a good time with the crew and everyone else. I love this vet now. Whenever Makayla has a problem I always turn to VCA Tanglewood Animal Hospital. What i loved the most is they follow up with you the day after to see how your pet it doing. They called me and asked me how Makayla was doing. Told them she was good and that's when they officially locked in my business with them. I totally recommend this place to people in need of a vet. the staff is friendly and welcoming. Enjoy!!!

I found VCA from the Humane Society after I purchased my puppy. I have been taking my dog to them for 2 years now. The staff is curteous and helpful. I never have a problem getting my dog in for an appointment. I can even get a same day appointment when necessary.

Dr. Streid is my dogs primary doctor. He is very patient with me and my questions. They are very quick on call backs and always send out my reminders for shots, well visits, etc.

The office is always clean and never over crowded. THe most I have every waited for my appointment is 10 minutes. The price is comparable to other vet clinics.

I would recommend them to anyone in the South Austin Area who may be looking for a vet .
