One year ago my dog (age 6) was operated on for stones in her bladder. She was in a lot of pain even with the medication. I brought her back to the clinic everyday for a week, still no improvement. They wanted to keep her overnight for observation, only to find out that nobody would be there ALL night with her. Seeing how much pain she was in they suggested that I take her to the Animal Hospital in Woburn. My heart pounding I had a friend drive me up there with my dog in my lap crying. At the hospital they told me that she was septic and only had a 20% chance of surviving surgery. She had been leaking blood and urine into her bladder all week due to carelessness of the surgeon at Melrose Animal Clinic. We had no choice but to put her down. My heart is still broken.

We used this clinic for years for our 2 dogs. Overall we liked the vets very much, especially Dr. Low and Dr. Kasow, and LOVED the staff, especially the front desk staff, with whom we had much contact over the years.
BUT when we needed them most, when our Beagle took a sudden turn for the worst, Dr. Kasow stated that she needed to be euthanized ASAP and that nothing could be done. During her physical exam, my dog yelped when ONE ear was attempted to be examined...Dr. Kasow said "I barely touched her." Yet she did NOT check the other ear. She decided our dog (age 13.5 at the time) had some sort of spinal or brain tumor due to a sudden onset on being unable to walk without losing her balance. We tearfully scheduled her euthanasia for the next evening, as we wanted to "think on it."

The next morning, quite by chance, a comment made by my daughter to a co-worker on the elevator who asked about our dog's wellbeing, was overheard by a stranger who said, "Our dog had those symptoms, and it turned out to be canine vestibular disease caused by an ear infection." Huh?? How could it be that a stranger was on a usually empty elevator and during a 20 second ride, on the VERY DAY our dog was to be euthanized at Melrose Animal Clinic...heard this chance remark? (we think somehow or other it was an "angel")

We researched quickly online, canceled that night's scheduled euthanasia, and had a second opinion where they found her raging ear infection within MOMENTS, and she was treated with medication and went on to have another NINE MONTHS OF GOOD QUALITY LIFE, until at age 14.5, she was peacefully euthanized in our home, when her little legs finally and truly suddenly failed to even hold her and her weight. Not an ear infection this time. The vet checked her and made sure before she peacefully left us and went to the Rainbow Bridge.

So I can only share OUR story- Dr. Kasow made a mistake, those things happen, but if a dog YELPS when you touch her ear, and you don't check further, and the owners are telling you that she was walking FINE that morning, then came home to find her walking like she was very drunk...then despite her age of 13, AND because of her overall stable good health.....GO FURTHER Dr. as we are counting on you!!

We feel VERY lucky to have had an additional 9 months with our Beagle, and her companion dog who adored her did too. IF NOT for a chance moment on an ordinarily empty elevator, we would NEVER have known otherwise.

Re: euthanasia--- ask questions!!!!!!!!! If your pet suddenly walks with difficulty, wobbling, falling, whatever- at least SUSPECT the possibility of Canine Vestibular Disorder which can be highly treatable, and in the case of our Beagle, it was!!!!

She was literally saved from death- by a stranger on an elevator!! We are still floored by Dr. Kasow's mistake (and what felt like indifference) and by the 2nd opinion vet to whom we are forever grateful, for he properly diagnosed and treated our dog, and then he gently and humanely helped her leave this life when her true time came.

    Thank you for reading.
    RIP to "CLP" our Beagle

    Dear Dr Silverman,
Thank you so much for the special way you take of our baby girl Jasmine.
From our first phone call we knew we had picked the right Doctor and staff to help get our Jasmine well and to care about her the way we do. Its amazing that when you walk in the door, your not greeted, but your pet is, with a heartfelt hello.
We were very concerned with Jasmine??s condition, one that other Doctors were unable to treat. You however took the time to research and find the right medication and diet to put Jasmine on the road to recovery. She is a happy little girl.
Our heartfelt thanks to a team of professionals who really care.
I will always recommend yourself and your staff.

I love this Vet Clinic. All of the Vet Techs are exceptionally nice. They take great pride in keeping the place spotless. As far as 1 review saying the want your $. I don't think so! :) There was a time my dog had a tick and I couldn't get it all out. I took her there and they could have charged me for a visit but they didn't. The truly care about your pet. If you ever have an emergency or something that you can't live with waiting for an appointment they will get you in there in 10 min if needed. If you have a question and you call they will spend as much time on the phone as possible. You never feel rushed or like your bothering them. As long as I live in the area I will never bring my dog or cat anywhere else.

Our pet has been a client of the Melrose Animal Clinic for four years. We have received excellent service. I am opposed to giving my cat tests that some adults in America can't afford- ie. thyroid tests. In the past, I have gotten major attitude from vets because of this stance. Melrose Animal Clinic always offers my (very elderly) cat any available testing but graciously accepts my decisions. They are definitely not just after my money!

I'm not a client at this vet, but sent my father to pick up prescription dog food that they were supposed to be holding. I had to return it after he brought it home because they gave me the wrong one size cans. They wouldn't give me my money back, only a credit. I paid in cash & had the receipt. I called them as soon as I got home. Only credit. I don't think this is right.
