Beware: BAD experience

In 2012 I decided to renovate my apartment. Before I started this project I designated a budget and decided on several ideas and concepts. This was going to be a complete renovation of a 1-bedroom apartment from A to Z: Including replacement of windows/doors, living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, closets etc. With an estimate to complete the job in 30-business days with a 1-year warranty on all labor. This is where the nightmare began. Once the project started, it didnt finish until 5-months later. This is nowhere near the 30-business day estimate. Also, everything that we discussed in the original contract became an upgrade for which I had to pay extra. The agreed upon estimate for the entire job was exceeded by over 1.5 times! Shifra fell short of most deliverables and lacked professionalism, scrupulous and integrity. When the job started there were two workers that were assigned to my project. Although this was my first renovation, it didnt take me long to realize that the two workers lacked the necessary experience to do the work they were tasked with and in the estimated time frame. Unfortunately, Rafael only came to evaluate their work a couple of times during the first month. For the most part the workers were unsupervised with little to no oversight. When I complained to Rafael, he designated a project manager to provide some level of oversight from day to day. Soon thereafter, the project manager was replaced for another project manager. It became very apparent that the new project manager had as much if not less experience than the two workers. To give you an idea, the new project manager was unable to properly install a battery operated door-bell. Almost everything that was handled by this crew had to be redone. On more than one occasion, several attempts were made to correct the initial work and mistakes made. During this time, it was very difficult to get ahold of Rafael. He would stop by very infrequently and toward the last couple of months stopped coming altogether. He would always try to reassure me that the project manager would handle the work. Unfortunately, this never materialized. As I had limited ability to stay elsewhere, I had no choice but to continue paying and moving forward with the project. The job that was done is completely unprofessional and unfinished. When I asked for new hardwood floors, they were installed over the existing wood floors. Rafael never took the time to remove the old floors and make the subfloor even. So the new floor was installed over the uneven old floors and now I have uneven new floor in my apartment. This is completely ridiculous and unacceptable! I need to have new windows, doors and patio doors installed. All these installments needed to be re-done more than once, since initially, the installations were incorrectly made. THz patio door leaked every time it rained for a couple of months and took several attempts to repair. During that time I heard every single excuse as to why the new patio door leaked. There was an old door in place of it for many years that didnt leak once before the patio door was installed. Anything that I needed built-out like closets, boarders and frames either inside or outside the house were crooked. The wrong calk and sealant was used on the bathroom tiles. Instead of using the correct paint with gloss on the bathroom door and ceiling to repel moisture, powder coat was used instead. In five months Shifra failed to deliver the quality of work that was agreed upon and this was further worsened by rushing to finish a project that was way over the contractors workmanship and craftsmanship. When the job was finally done after 5-months of torture, soon thereafter paint on the walls and ceilings started to crack. I brought in two professional contractors on several occasions to assess the work that was done by Shifra. The only thing they said was that it was my mistake to hire Shifra and to continue to pay them for sub-standard work. Shifra cut corners by not installing sheet rock on the walls and ceilings. In one room, they cut corners instead by installing sheet rock squares in the ceiling where they needed to install new lighting versus entire sheet rock slabs. Paint started to crack along the seams and where the walls werent properly sanded and treated prior to painting. I needed to have Shifra come to my place every month for touch-up work and to fix and correct their prior work. They specifically couldnt build back a window in a wall where a patio door was installed. The work was done in such haphazard fashion that even to the untrained eye like mine it looked completely unprofessional. It took several attempts to plead with Rafael in order to get his crew to come back and do things right. The final straw was when Rafael decided to not honor our contract and cut the touch-up work guaranty 3-months short of the 1-year anniversary date.

We recently had Shifra Construction, remodel our master bed and bathroom in Bellerose. They were wonderful to work with and very attentive. I really appreciated Barrys input to make our design exactly what we wanted but also staying within our budget. Barry is the cleanest and most organized contractor I have ever dealt with. We plan on using them to remodel our kitchen within the next year or so.

We had Shifra construction do a complete new design to my Mother's bathroom. New marble shower, wash basin and toilet. Vaulted the ceiling. Installed new cabinet and vanity, lighting and painted. Also had them paint setting room, dinning room, kitchen, back porch, laundry area. Recently had them install new vents in each end of the house. I would recommend Gulley Remodeling for any job.??
