Tennis courts are well maintained and annual free clinics are offered in April and May by the Oak Ridge Tennis Club and City Recreation & Parks Department. Some of the other events planned for 2011 include:

MARCH 12th and 13th Tennis Registration Event
Tennis demonstrations will be on viewat the National Fitness Center from 1:00 to 5:00 on March 12th and on March 13th. Oak Ridge parents are invited tostop by and register for tennis events scheduled this spring forchildren agesfive to 17. There will be players at the Fitness Center demonstrating how novice players experience success using customized tennis courts and equipment.Email David Bowman at aceace10s@yahoo.com or call 389-5176 for more information.

MARCH 14th Deadline forAdult Tennis Leagues
The Oak Ridge Tennis Club 2011 SpringAdult League play will begin on Monday, April 4, 2011. Leagues will include evening and daytime singles and doubles, including separate women??s and mixed leagues if there is sufficient interest. Email the Oak Ridge Tennis Club at oakridgetennisclub@yahoo.com or call 389-5176 for more information. Leagues will be divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced, based on USTA NTRP ratings. Contact theTennisClubif you do not have a current rating or know your equivalent skill level.

MARCH 15th, 22nd, 24th, 28th
Oak Ridgers are invited to three tennis clinics to see the customized equipment being usedby children ages ten and under during leagues and tournaments this spring. Two clinics will be held from 5:30-6:30 March 15th & 22nd at the Boy's Club; one clinic from 4:30-5:30 March 24th at Girl's Inc. and clinics all day at Willowbrook Elementary School in Oak Ridge.

MARCH 28th Deadline for Junior Tennis Leagues
This spring junior playersagesfive to 17 can participate in tennis leagues on the Oak Ridge High School courts. Players will be grouped by their skill level and age in divisions for Girl's Singles, Boy's Singles, Girl's Doubles, and Boy's Doubles. The Oak Ridge Tennis Club 2011 Spring Junior League play will begin on Monday, April 4, 2011. Start times for all league matches on Monday and Thursday evenings will be 5:30 and 6:30 pm. On APRIL 2nd Oak Ridge Will HostAQuickStart Tennis Tournament
Oak Ridge will host a one-day tennis tournament on April 2nd that is limited to two age groups: 1) ages eight and younger; and 2) ages ten and younger. Juniors born May 1, 2002 or later are eligible for the 8 and under events. Children 10 years old and younger willplay tennis with lighter tennis balls and racquets on smaller courts.Juniors born May 1, 2000 or later are eligible for the 10 and under events. QuickStart is a new tennis format endorsed by the United States Tennis Association to help young players learn and enjoy the game. The first annual Alvin Weinberg "Singles" Tennis Tournament for youth and adults will be held June 10th and 11th. The event is one of many community activities created to honor Alvin this year. He was an avid tennis player and a fixture on the Jackson Square Courts. Awards will be presented to players and food provided at a 6:00 pm tournament reception on Saturday.

A Wood Racquets Exhibition Tennis Match will be held on June 11th. Players will use wood racquets, white tennis balls, and wear traditional attire consistent with the 1940's theme of the Secret City Festival. Last year Jimmy Hyams, Mozelle Bell, Janelle Dunigan, Samantha Bowman and Charlie Hensley participated.

The 7th annual Secret City Festival "Doubles" Tennis Tournament will be held June 17-19th. Senior, adult, and youth divisions will be created based on age and skill level. The tournament will be held in Oak Ridge again on the Jackson Square Tennis Courts.

Oak Ridge will host its first adult age group United States Tennis Associated sanctioned tennis tournament in Oak Ridge August 26th, 27th, & 28th. Entrants will participate in age 45 and over, age 50 and over, 55 and over, etc. to improve their state and national rankings. Players will compete at a very high level; with local Oak Ridger Dennis Strickler an excellent example. He is consistently ranked year-in year-out in the top five for his age group in the state of Tennessee.
