The Barbed Rose and a 30th anniversary proved to be a winning combination for my wife and I. The filet and the rib eye was both perfect and the banana's foster bread puddings was fabulous. Having eaten lunch here before and in The Burger

I was a little concerned about going to The Barbed Rose because of some of the negative reviews -- glad I didn't let that sway me, I was thoroughly delighted! I chose to go to the Burger Bar side and was surprised when I was offered menus

The food was good, plated well, but cold. Appitizer never showed up, when asked about it, was told it went to a private party at the restaurant, so I guess they were out of it after that, because it still didn't show up after asking.

My wife and I have eaten in the restaurant once and it was very good. The wild boar was succulent and remarkably smooth. Some authentic gaminess but not at all offputting. Wine list is good and the markup minimal.

After reading the reviews posted on CitySearch, I set my expectations high for an out-of-this-world dining experience at the Barbed Rose. I was particularly attracted to some of its unique foods, including boar, ostrich, alligator, quail, and venison. Unfortunately, I was a little let down by the inexperienced wait staff, small wine selection, and some of the food items (red fish/rice and banana foster bread pudding were not up to par). (My boyfriend rated his steak as "good" and the potatoes au gratin as "delicious." ) Also, several patrons wore t-shirts, tanks tops, shorts, and leggings, so it's difficult to call it "elegant dining." For the overall experience and food, I thought the meal was over-priced. Would I recommend this place? I am in the middle of the road on this one.

I'm in Alvin about once a month and tried them based on my massage therapists suggestion. I was a little surprised at the prices considering it is Alvin, but I'm pleased to see them giving it a go...small town America can use this kind of cultural shot in the arm! The hot spinach dip with wonton chips and Texas cobb salad made for a great after massage late lunch and glass of wine. I'm sure to return.

Who would have thought! We heard a lot of good things about the restaurant, ... well... now I'm hooked as well! I have been for both dinner and lunch (The Burger Bar), both experiences were fantastic. I had the steak with a sweet glaze, which was cooked to perfection, with asparagus. We had both the cheesecake and bread pudding .. wonderful ending to the dinner! The burgers for lunch were very good, I must mention the shaved pork sandwich and cobb salad... both are something I could eat on a daily basis! We will be visiting again soon!

Thought we would try out the burger bar as a preview to the restaurant. Based on this experience won't be going to the restaurant. Got a buffalo burger with goat cheese, bacon and garlic aoli, with a side of sweet potato fries. The bun was soggy and small and the fries were overdone and shriveled( as if they were previously done and the reheated to serve). Also ordered a beer with dinner and then was told they were out of that brand( early on a Fri night.. WTF) If this is the way the burger bar is run ..I am not going to chance spending big bucks on the interior. The outside should be overdone in hopes of bringing clientele back to the main restaurant. This was a sad representation of a burger from a supposedly high end restaurant. Would have been better going to a fast food place.

Im not even sure where to start. If Im paying $$$ for the food I want the BEST food Ive ever had. That definitely wont happen here. The service is slow and is VERY inexperienced. I have been here 4 times (thinking it would have changed since the opening in july) and the only two things I have had that I can honestly give a good review on is the gumbo (go joe!!) and the oysters with bacon and jalapenos. Other than that the burger is tiny and ridiculously priced, the thin fries are just too difficult to eat (they look more like noodles than french fries) the thick fries are normal thin fries and are ok until you dip it in the homeade ketchup. The rice paired with the gumbo taste like instant/minute rice. The filet.. should be the easiest thing on the menu to get right, yet somehow the chef has managed to put no seasonings (mainly salt) on it. Once we added salt to our filets they had little flavor, but still nothing i would want my taste buds to suffer through again. If Im going to pay this much for food Id rather go to Killen's in Pearland, Atleast there Im guaranteed a delicious meal. Sorry to the owners and the chef but this place needs alot of work. Also I would agree with the other person who gave you 2 stars.. how is it that EVERYONE is giving you 5 stars? It is definitely not deserved.

I am impressed by the great reviews, but I am puzzled by the percentage of votes on the "Best of" list...I hate to question, but is the restaurant doing something to encourage customers to cast a vote for them in numerous categories? The restaurant indicates that they have a small wine list - how could that make them #1 in wines?

What an amazing dinner! We had the fried bacon and jalapeno oysters, filet and fries, BBQ shrimp and grits (blue maize grits from Waco), truffled mac and cheese, mushrooms and wine. EVERYTHING we ate was well beyond our expectations. We HAD to meet the chef - we have NEVER had mushrooms so tasty and these mushrooms were not swimming in a pool of guilt. The fliet was cooked to perfection - we ordered medium-rare and that is exactly what we got, and, wow was it tasty!!! The wine is reasonably priced, the service was good, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with natural wood beadboard ceilings, a full bar, unique original artwork on the walls and there is even a more relaxed atmosphere outside called the Burger Bar. Whodathunk that the place where I have taken some of the worst photos in my life (It is the old DMV building) would turn into my new favorite restaruant. It doesn't even look like the same building! Impressive! We will be back again and again! Oh, and AGAIN!!!

We had an extended family dinner Saturday night at The Barbed Rose which included two grand kids (seven and four). Every thing was great! The kitchen made bacon cheese burgers for the kids which they loved. We had the crab dip appetizer which was delicious. I had the pork chop special which was perfect. Brine-marinated pork cooked to perfection with the best potatoes I have ever eaten. The service was excellent and the owner visited our table several times.

In downtown historic Alvin there is this beautiful little place called The Barbed Rose. The drive may seem a little out of the way but let me tell you it is well worth it. I took my three daughter's there for a very special dinner. We were blown away. We started off with the Divers Scallops. They were the best scallops I have ever had. You cannot leave this place without trying Joe's Gumbo. The flavors explode with every bite. The food is so fresh and there is something for everyone on the menu. The Chef will take your pallet on an amazing journey. I will be back again and again. The Barbed Rose is my new favorite place.

This is most definetly one of Houston's finest eateries.
The food was outrageously good and the service was awesome. I would not hesitate to be retuning over and over again. This place is great. The Oysters and the Barbed Rose Bacon topped with thos pickled jalapenos just cannot be outdone by anyone.

First and foremost I know the trek to Alvin, TX might be a deal breaker for most, but after you experience what The Barbed Rose has to offer, you will see, the drive is worth it. From the moment I stepped into this small, intimate dining room I knew I had stumbled across a jewel! The restaurant sits at the entrance of downtown Alvin just beyond the historic railroad depot. The trains still run and can be heard in the restaurant, but not to the level of being annoying. The service was wonderful. Our waiter explained the specials, ingredients, wines, and flavors so that we understood everything. You can really feel the heart and soul that the Chef put into the menu. The bar is stocked and ready to serve as well. I can not wait until our next visit to The Barbed Rose.

I heard about the mass reviews on this restaurant and decided i needed to try it myself. I decided i would take a client with me that visits Houston on a continues basis. We arrived and realized right away that this was going to be an amazing experience. The host met us with a smile walked us to are seat. The atmosphere was very comfortable.

Honestly i was sort of worried because my client was actually a vegetarian but when are waiter came and i let him know about the situation he replied with saying "We have an amazing Portobello Mushroom Burger" and i felt right at ease when he said that.
So that is what he had to eat and I ate the phillycheese steak. Both sandwiches were delicious. My client said that it was his favorite restaurant in Houston now.
I cant wait to go back for dinner very soon.
