Judy has been tuning my piano for over ten years. It always sounds wonderful! As a serious pianist, this is important to me. She is also extremely reliable and her cost is reasonable. Highly recommend!

I recently contacted Judy Kroll to get an update on her availability as well as her current charge for piano tuning as, due to illness I had let some time slide between scheduled tunings by Judy. She quoted me a price of $90. I smiled as I realized Judy's price had only increased by 50% across the nearly 20 years I have welcomed her to my home to help me take care of my piano. I respect and admire Judy's professional skills set and knowledge base. Judy also has skills that are difficult, if not impossible to teach, in the realm of interpersonal interactions. Her talents of compassion and empathy coupled with her well-developed listening skills assist her in providing a favorable mix of services/recommendations to fit (I suspect) most anyone's "Big Picture". Judy's business ethics and sense of fairness can be summed up as: "It needs to work for everyone or it really does not work for anyone". It has been my pleasure to work with Judy since 1994. It is my pleasure to give Judy an unconditional recommendation. NOTE: Being curious, I later researched other area tuners, finding Judy prices to average @ 40% lower - most competitive, eh!!

Judy has been doing my piano, a Kawai grand, for about 20 years now. She started when she lived in the area, and has continued to tune it annually when she comes to visit her family. I understand that this is not an easy piano to tune, but she does an excellent job in making both me and my piano happy. Her rates are reasonable, she is excellent about keeping her appointments, she treats me, my home, and my piano with care and respect. I do hope she has no plans to retire!

For the second time, I had Judy tune my "inferior" piano (which she was constant in reiterating). I don't care about the status of my piano, I wanted it tuned, and she basically destroyed it, tuning-wise. Of course, she blamed it all on the "piano". Not only do some unisons have problems, but more importantly (I can fix the unisons), the TEMPER of the scales was completely uncompatible....not one octave could go to the next without being severely out of pitch with each other. When I called her about it, I asked if she could come fix my "now unplayble" piano. She not only became so defensive and offensive (I was shocked, I expected professionalism, here), but she insisted if she would come again, I would pay her full price, again. I lost twice...I never got a tuned piano, and I payed what I consider good money for it, so I lost TWICE. When I could finally get in a question in between her defensive ranting response, I wanted to know what equipment she used. Get this: she uses ONLY a tuning fork!!!!! I'm sorry, this is a NOT going to work when tuning piano unless you REALLY know what you are doing!!! This is due to the fact that the octaves must be tempered, and a machine, not an "ear" is necessary. She obviously has either 'lost her touch' or never had it in the first place. I am HIGHLY disappointed that her level of professionalism did not allow for her to fix my destroyed tuning job without paying for it all over again, and by the time she was finished yelling her insecure defense, I realized I didn't want to even invite her on to our property! Yes, I'm disappointed. She was like a twelve-year-old, in her level of defensiveness and insecurity. I will NEVER recommend her to anyone. I'm sorry to write this, but it must be known, before someone else ends up in my situation....a piano I can no longer "play" (if you care about 'pitch', that is). Do not hire her, you will be out money, and out a playable piano after the fact.

Business Response:

Just a few points for the interested piano owner: The piano was a Wurlitzer spinet, about 60 years old. It was worn out, and has not had consistent tunings for many years. This is not about "status." I never used the word "inferior." I merely explained the condition of the instrument. When I tuned it a YEAR AND NINE MONTHS ago, I advised a follow up tuning in FOUR TO FIVE MONTHS to stabilize the instrument, which was significantly below pitch .When I was next called to tune, TWENTY ONE months later, the piano was a half tone flat. I left a note for the customer explaining that the piano was very unstable, difficult to tune, and would need another tuning in a few months. A tuner must work with the instruments limitations and condition. The reviewer has also left out the fact that I offered her either a FULL REFUND, or that I would come back out for 1/2 price. SHE DECLINED BOTH. My last point: Tuning without a machine is the time honored method , existing centuries before machine tuning, and known as Aural Tuning.
