This store has a great selection of fish and fish supplies. I recently purchased a set up for a 10 gallon tank at this store, plus all the supplies, as I was setting up a secondary quarantine tank. The store personnel answered all of my questions.

A few criticisms, the store is in a "dive" shopping center in a "hole in the wall" sort of place. The store is small and cramped. The store does not have an answering machine with a message at least stating their hours of operation and address. I think it is generally poor form when a business has a phone that just rings and rings when nobody is there to answer it... an answering machine costs very little and will add to the professionalism of the business.

But back to the positive, I have purchased about 90% of my fish from this store. I have only lost 3 fish, which I can't contribute to the store directly, but suspect they may not have been in the best of shape when I bought them. Which is a good reason to make sure to pick fish which are active and alert and not fish that are sluggish or inactive.

Also, this store has a wide selection of fish food, fish medicines, cleaning supplies, and water testing supplies. I find this store meets all of my needs and will continue to patronize this establishment.

I would recommend this store to anyone in Anaheim starting a new tank, or for those who have an established tank, as a place to pick up supplies and gear.

The store is cluttered, but it has sooo many things I can't find anywhere else except on the internet. They have a huge variety of fish and like the other poster said a large variety of smaller less showy fish. They also have a whole aisle of really neat fish that are too big for my tank. but they make the store more exciting to visit.

Unlike the other poster, I didn't smell any fishy smell, which for a fish store with lots of salt water tanks is a sign of how well they care for their tanks.

The people working there seemed friendly and willing to help, but didn't once bother me while I was browsing. I hate it when fish store people hover and ask about your home set up and try to tell you things you already know and push unnecessary products on you.

I am new to this hobby and have been to a few different stores. This is the one that I will give a 5 star. When I first walk in, someone was ready to help, but he also gave me time to look around myself. He gave me good advice and answered all my questions. I have a smaller tank (12 gallon) and this place has different kinds of smaller fishes that I want. I would definitely go back.

I was looking into setting up a freshwater tank and travelled to about 10 different fish stores in the North Orange County area. I was disappointed by many of the fish stores I went to, but The Reef is where I finally found what I needed.
I set up my tank a year ago and this is the only place I have gone back too, other than PetSmart for a few plants I needed.
The Reef had the Cherry Shrimp and Cardinal Tetras that I really wanted and had small but fairly good selection of live plants, plus lots of natural rocks and driftwoods.
They do focus more on saltwater fish, shrimp and a large coral section with good prices , but a freshwater person will not walk away feeling disappointed.
As for service I have never walked in the door without someone asking me if I needed help.
There are boxes and extra stock on the ground, no problem for me but if you are hard of seeing or in wheel chair it could be real hassle.
I felt the tanks are very clean and the fish look healthy and active. The place does not smell bad at all, just like an average fish store. (the place over in Brea with water dripping down the front windows and smelled like a sewer is a different story!)
I would happily recommend them to anyone.

After traveling around Orange County, and exploring over a dozen tropical fish stores, I can tell you that the only person I met who actually knew what he was talking about, yet didn't fake it when he didn't know, was the owner of this store. When necessary, he got out the book and looked it up rather than give me information that he wasn't confident of. His local competition are staff in other stores who pretend to know so they won't look stupid, or simply are too busy to help with anything but your cash. After a month with a planted Tanganyikan cichlid tank I can tell you that every one of my healthiest fish and plants came from this store. I don't know why I bother to go anywhere else.

Pros: Extensive Cichlid inventory, live plants and good information

Cons: Not the prettiest or trendiest locale

This pet shop focuses on tropical fish, with a few turtles and frogs to add variety. There is a respectable variety of aquariums and aquarium "fillers". The prices are very reasonable. However, the store is often kept rather dark and cluttered, with boxes in the aisles. A slightly offensive smell, more noticable than in most pet stores, is obvious from the moment you enter the store. It is sometimes difficult to get the attention of employees.
