Nice location, mediocre food, there are 1000's of much better restaurants, this is not texmex and NOT good Mexican food. I am NEVER going back.

Lush decor, attentive service & interior Mexican cuisine are worth the hefty price tag on Fonda's menu. Brunch here is a don't-miss.

While the atmosphere and decor of Fonda San Miguel are inviting, the real reason for dining at a restaurant, the food, was unimpressive, especially for one of a higher price point. It was fine and nicely arranged, though I enjoyed it no more than a restaurant for half the cost. Also, avoid ordering a mojito, as it was basically a cup of lime juice for $9 (four lime wedges in the glass) with little mint or sweetener. \n\nUpon entering, the courtyard area is lovely and colorful and the dining room offers a pleasant ambiance, though the tables are a bit too close together as I had no room to adjust my chair. Furthermore, the citysearch provided dress code is accurate as myself and my company were in nice attire, as were most others, though jeans were worn by some and I noticed several tables with kids, though they were well enough behaved.\n\nThe environment was welcoming and nice, though the food was forgettable. A nice place to just grab a drink and sit in the courtyard, though for dinner, look elsewhere.\n\nPros- Atmosphere, Decor, Service\nCons- Price, Average Food\n\n(republished review from 2008)

Theres so many great things about this restaurant I wish my wallet could handle it. I definitely recommend as a large group or a date to impress. Have never been let down with the food but I also never order the basic things like fajitas..my favorite dish is the cochinita pibil. Took my mom here for brunch last year's mother's day.. although it is also expensive it is very extravagant, plentiful, and beautiful. It was a very special mom date thats for sure.

We recently went here for a birthday celebration. I had heard it was pricey, but it was really too expensive for what you get. I don't like to have to ask what the price is for a particular dish and there you have to ask about the entire fish section. The food was good as far as I was concerned, but everyone else said it was just ""OK"". Some had the fajitas and said they were no better than any other Mexican restaurant, but double the price. We had margaritas and I was amazed that they would serve them in wine glasses!!! Get real. There were a few sips for $9 and by the way, ""happy hour prices"" are ONLY at the bar. I don't think we will go back any time soon, sorry to say. I had hoped for a much better experience.

if you like authentic mexican food, you'll love fonda. the ambiance is great, although a little loud. the food is very good and the price reflects that and then some. Its a little pricey considering i'm not a huge fan of mexican, i probably wouldn't go back. But i enjoyed going there for brunch.

Excellent authentic Mexican (not Tex-Mex) food. Prompt curteous service and wonderful ambience. Food is on the expensive side ($18 Cheese Enchiladas) but the quality is there. Many daily specials, green choriso made in house. A dining experience.

To rank them mediocre would be a compliment. You're essentially paying for the leather bound menus and expensive bricks and mortar. The food is below average for the price and you will get better service at Taco Cabanna's drive-thru. Needless to say we were extremely disappointed after all the rave reviews and recommendations. In a time like this when people are pinching their pennies restaurants should do everything they can to back up their big prices with big service and excellent food. Sorry to disappoint but save your money.

This is a great local favorite! Every time my parents come to town they insist we go here. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful; almost worth going just to see the art. The service is above reproach - the servers know so much about their wines and their menu. The food is wonderful, I've been many, many, times and have never had a bad experience. The chorizo queso is amazing (almost a meal in itself), the shrimp are great, and so are the scallops. The owner is usually on the premises and willing to chit-chat with you. Definitely worth the money - amazing food, great wine list (includes hard to find Mary Edwards!), knowledgeable servers who obviously enjoy their job, and beautiful art. What more could you want?

This is fine Mexican dining, very enjoyable. I love their appetizers and most of the menu. Very fresh food and fantastic drinks. \r\nThe mole is exceptional as is any of their chicken dishes as far as I'm concerned. The fish is very fresh but you can get something ""plain"" once and a while. The main steak dish, unreal. \r\nI would skip the fajitas although the claim to have introduced them to the US. Boring, not flavor. Yes fresh but just nothing exciting about the meat at all.\r\nExpect to pay for the experience and and to wait for a table. That's ok, they have great margaritas.

We went there for mother's day brunch, and unfortunatly didnt ask how much it would cost...we just figured it would be the normal expensive...maybe $20 each $25 at most. When we got the check, I swear I thought I would pass out! $147 for three people, outrageous! The food was good, but unless you ate absolutely everything it wasnt worth the money. Im still dumbfounded at how expensive it was, and sadly it really overshadows the lovely mothers day we had planned. On the bright side, the decor is amazing and impressive, but it still wasnt worth the money. If I'm going to pay almost $50 per person, I want baluga caviar quality, not quail and flan.

While the price of gas steadily increases and I try to find other modes of transportation, I just spent $88 on brunch that was mediocre at best. That cost me two tanks of gas and I will now be riding the bus for the next couple of weeks to pay for that meal. I braced myself for maybe $20 a piece (which would still be overpriced) but $38.50 per brunch!!!!!!! And, they charged me for a refill for a diet coke! The audacity!!!!!! Everyone, go to Chez Zee for brunch instead.

Cons: I'm poor now

This was probably our fifth time to visit Fonda San Miguel. It has never been my favorite restaurant, but we were with a group that wanted to try it. Their first visit resulted in disaster. Everyone agreed the prices were a rip off, the service was unacceptable, unaccommodating, and inflexible. (Example: My friend asked for some grilled jalapenos to accompany his meal---waitress responded that ""the kitchen was way too busy to do that"" The waitress was short, dismissive, and snooty. She was really put out to serve our 8 top. The food was luke-warm and took forever....upwards of an hour. This meal was a true disappointment. I'm afraid this place has turned into a bit of a ""tourist trap"". I will never return to or recommend this establishment. It was just horrible! AVOID. If you must see the place--stop in and have a beverage before going to a good restaurant.

The cook has changed. I have had previous memorable meals here but the one I had this wk was poor. The sopa de elote was basically blended canned corn with no flavoring. It was also served luke warm. the cerviche had no diced fresh jalapenos or cilantro which are distinguishing flavors in this dish. Instead of tortilla chips it was served with deep fried flour tortillas which is not a good substitute. My dining partners meal was also only warm. Attention is needed to serve food hot. I am not one to send food back. I will pay for the meal and not ever return to the restaurant in the future. This place may be riding on its past history. I would be hesitant to recommend this to anyone.

Well this place blew me away. It is a weird spot in Austin to have such an amazing restaurant.. I was completely suprised as to how gorgeous it was inside with all the beautiful Spanish/Mexican art and decor.\r\n\r\nI am so lucky to make a reservation though, this place completely fills up!!! I have had dinner and brunch here and both were spectacular i order the ancho rellenos for dinner.. there is absolutely no other place in Austin that serves a dish like this, the server said it came out quickly because it is their most popular dish!\r\n\r\nI usually love hole in the wall places or little tex-mex.. but I know when money is made to be spent.. this is the place to go when you want to splurge on an excellent meal (by the way I cant believe how man cheap asses posted reviews on here). The place is gorgeous, if you're suprised a holiday buffet cost over $30 then you should eat at a low-end franchise and leave the gems to the rest of us! (b.t.w. brunch is ridiculously extravagant)\r\n\r\nWonderful place, recommend reservations, buy the cookbook, great place to go when you want to live a little!

If I could give this restaurant 4.5 stars, I would. The most notable thing about FSM is the decor ... it is very unique, interior Mexico authentic and romantic with a capital R. The food is positively some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. FSM has a full and pleasantly unusual menu. Their flour tortillas are so f/cking good - I don't even like flour tortillas, but I ate every single one they brought me. The recommended wine was amazing. \r\n\r\nHowever, unless my Mexican food is doing something extra special like driving me home, it is not worth the prices this place is boldly asking. I will most definitely go back, but only when I have a few extra dollars to throw away in a WTF whirlwind.

I feel that many don?t realize the difference between Tex-Mex and Authentic Mexican cuisine, thus resulting in some unfavorable reviews concerning the food. If you?re looking for Tex-Mex you?re not going to be satisfied with your experience at Fonda San Miguel. However, if you?re looking to taste and enjoy the authentic flavors of Mexico, this Austin favorite is where you should go. I had friends in from Dallas and everything about our dining experience was fabulous. From the beautiful interior, superior service and quality cuisine, my friends and I were greatly impressed. This is a place that every Austinite should introduce to their out-of-town family and friends.

We went to Fonda San Miguel for a celebratory dinner on a weekend night. We were impressed by the wonderful decor of the restaurant as soon as we walked in. We had reservations so, we were immediately seated. Our server promptly served water and took our drink orders. Server was back within 10 minutes with drinks and took the rest of our order. We had tamales for appetizers, for main course I had enchiladas de mole and my husband had chile relleno. All appetizers and entrees were really good. Then we had tres leches cake for dessert, which was wonderful. It was our first time trying the cake so, I am not sure whether the cake is better than other restaurants. We spent almost 100 dollars on dinner and felt that it was well worth the experience.

This place is beautiful when you walk in. That is about the only good thing I can say about it. I'm so confused by the other reviews. Maybe if you get past the attitude laden gatekeepers you will have a decent experience, but it's not worth the $300 you'll end up dropping by the end of the evening. We had a reservation for four knowing that one of our friends would be meeting us later in the meal. We were thinking that we would get drinks and appetizers and order dinner when he arrived. We weren't allowed to be seated until he was there even though we had a reservation. When we explained he wasn't meeting us until later we were told if we were seated without him he would be seated at a different table and that we wouldn't receive as good of service if we sat down as a party of three??? Great way to run a restaurant. The place wasn't even that busy, I went to the bathroom when we were waiting and saw several tables available. So we sat in the virtually empty waiting area where we were told we could order drinks and appetizers but it took a server forty minutes to bring us menus/take orders and that was after I chased him down. We were finally seated and then dined on overpriced food with mediocre service. We suggested the place so it was so embarassing!

Look, the food is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the service is excellent. But, I am Hispanic and have eaten in Mexican restaurants all over Texas, Mexico, and the Southwest, and I have to say there is no way a restaurant can justify charging over $20.00 for a plate of enchiladas. I will pay money for food, but when you cross the $20.00 mark for a plate, you better get a cut of beef, fish, or something more amazing and complex than 2 stuffed flour tortillas and rice and beans.\r\n\r\nThis place has good food, but if you want food that is every bit as good, if not better, in a cooler environment than go to Vivo's on Manor. The menu is not nearly as vast, but you won't leave there thinking, ""Did I just pay $125.00 for two people to eat Mexican food with a couple of drinks?"" Huh.

Ignore all negative comments! Yes it can be more expensive than a burger joint or your average Chili's restaurant. The food is prompt, the service excellent, the food is divine and so are the drinks! The shredded duck enchiladas are worth the money. Sometimes people forget you get what you pay for. It has a very nice atmosphere, and it is truly one of my favorite restaurants. Go in with an open mind and be blown away!

The food is good, the atmosphere is locked in the 70's What passes for the ""Best"" here is really nothing more than well prepared dishes. They do have very good mole' and fish dishes. Just don't be surprised when the decor is lacking. A note, the lighting here a night is very low. Ok if you don't really want anyone to see you.

My boyfriend & I went there from Houston and to my surprise (we had heard so many good things) the food was decent. I will NOT be going back. Our bill was $85.00. For 2 people and 2 sprites. Oh I forgot to mention that it was a buffet. The atmosphere was good, service was OK, food was OK, but it wasn't worth what we paid.

I was really looking forward to having dinner at Fonda San Miguel and what a disappointment! Our waiter was very rude and the service was some of the worst I have ever received. My friend just wanted to leave the experience was so unpleasant! The food was mediocre - I have definitely had much better at holes in the walls! To my great surprise, I found dinner at Fonda San Miguel to be a waste of my time and money.

Cons: Horribly rude and inefficient service, mediocre food

No canned tex-mex here. This is the only restaurant in town where I've found truly authentic made-from-scratch mole, and here you can find several different varieties of it at their weekend brunch, as well as melt-in-your-mouth homemade tortillas and amazing salads. A great place for real interior mexican cuisine and the surroundings are beautiful-great patio, bar. Note: The Sunday brunch menu seems to offer a wider variety of dishes than the dinner menu.

Pros: off-beat location means there is always parking available, professional servers with excellent knowledge of food and wine

Cons: pricey (with respect to mexican food) but worth every penny

This place has sold me. I crave to go back! Apparently I went here as a child but that was decades ago! My boyfriend just took me here this past weekend and I fell in love. I fell in love with the atmosphere, the artwork, the fast service, great drinks, and fabulous food! Thinking of their shredded duck enchiladas just makes my mouth water! You cannot leave without trying one of their unique and delicious margaritas! It is somewhat pricey but worth every penny in my book. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant.

Delicious food, great atomosphere. Wonderful wait staff! Definately a treat. And try not to skip dessert. The Tres Leche and Crepes de Cajeta are worth the trip alone:)

After reading excellent reviews we had high expectations. We arrived to a packed restaurant and were told an hour wait. The bar area is beautiful and comfortable. However....service was odd to say the least - not friendly and overall very abrupt. We waited forever for a waiter, who had to come back twice to ask us what we wanted. Margaritas are good but small. \nFinally we were seated in main dining area. Again, the ambiance is spectacular but we found everything else to be below our expectations. The waiter was aloof and distracted. We ordered rellenos and ancho chile and much to our surprise, they arrived within 2 minutes ...a little disconcerning! (how long had they been sitting under a lamp?? - the side of cold rice & beans clearly indicated this). The food was mediocre at best and the prices, outrageous - does not live up to the hype.

By far one of my favorite restaurants in the world. My boyfriend and I went on a casual reccomendation and were blown away by this very unique place. The food is beyond reproach and the service is fabulous without being too stuffy. We ask for Connie's section every time. She's awesome! They also serve the best mojito I have ever had and I am very picky! If you can't afford a whole meal, just drop by for the amazing atmosphere and savor the best cocktails in Austin.

My husband and I went to Austin for the weekend (from Fort Worth) and visited this restaurant because of the great reviews and good word of mouth. We found it to be overpriced and the food was just ok. The ambience is beautiful, and the margaritas were great, but the food was nothing to write home about. Ridiculously overpriced, and the service was just not all that great. I'm sure we could have gotten better food and better service for half the price. To us, this was more of a great place for a large group, not so much of a romantic place. I am glad we made a reservation because it was packed!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. It is a bit steep for my budget or I would go at least once a week! The atmosphere is so lovely and authentic. The food is genuine interior mexico, so don't go expecting your typical tex-mex. I would say that Fonda San Miguel is the most elegant and upscale Mexican restaurant in Austin, yet they also have on their dinner menu many excellent things for the person who prefers continental fare. Their Sunday buffett is excellent - the ceviche, napalito and guacamole salads, corn pudding and pork adobo are some of my favorites. They also have one of the best mole' sauces in Texas! Service is excellent, prompt but not invasive. All in all a wonderful place!

I'd heard a lot about Fonda but nothing could prepare me for the experience that was waiting as I walked through the door. A rich, warmly decorated restaurant in old Mexican Colonial style, with a very friendly and welcoming feel, great service and meticulously prepared food, and a thoroughly memorable meal. After being disappointed at a couple other Austin fine restaurants, I was beginning to wonder if I could find a wonderful fine dining meal here in town that wouldn't make me feel that shudder when I signed the check. Well, I've found it in Fonda... if you are looking for great traditional Mexican I'd highly recommend it!

It is easy to forget that you are actually in Austin when dining here. Luscious tropical setting. Beautiful decor. Interior Mexican food at it's best.\n\nI was disappointed in the brunch though. It is rare that buffets ever measure up to the price and this was no exception.

On Sunday, May 11th, we went to Fonda San Miguel for the first time. I didn't know it was a buffet, which I should have left at that point, not to be waited on for Mother's Day. But then no where was there a price for anything... Needless to say after an OK meal, a glass of tea and a coke when the bill came for $77, I WAS SHOCKED. It was far from worth it and I felt completely ripped off. Besides that I guess because they were busy, the service wasn't that grand either. We won't be returning.

This is truly the best Mexican Restaurant I have ever been to. We had Sunday brunch there. All the food was excellent and the service as well. From the fresh lime margarita and orange juice to the sweet bread pudding, everything was great. I have no particular favorite. They are all my favorites! The atmosphere also added to the enjoyment.

This used to be my favorite restaurant, but they are slipping. Wine by the glass is an expensive JOKE. I've had bigger portions at free tastings. Last night they were out of our first two entree choices, a fact the server neglected to mention beforehand. (One was a special and it was still early in the evening.) My ""stuffed"" zucchinis, which I usually like, had NO stuffing. None. Not a spoonful. It was just zucchinis with cheese and sauce.
