I have known Jeff Baldwin since 2002, as a friend and training partner at the Harris Academy. I have witnessed his love of the martial arts, his passion for jiu jitsu, and his desire to better himself in those realms is second to none. Continual improvement is his way of life, he will never stop learning. These traits blend naturally with his love of teaching, where he shares with the students and helps them bring their goals into fruition.

I have trained at The Harris Academy now for over 8 years. If you are a working professional (like myself) and looking for a safe place to train, the Harris Academy is the place for you. There is a sense of family here and everyone is there to learn and help each other achieve their goals in a safe, positive manner.

I have been a martial arts practitioner for 15+ years, studying Taekwondo under the tutelage of Hyung Lee and Taekwondo and Aikido under the tutelage of Eduardo Mayobre. I developed my Jeet Kune Do and Brazilian Jujitsu foundation as a student of Roy Harris at the Harris Academy for roughly the past 3 years and have developed friendships along the way.

Without a doubt, the quality of instruction and people at the academy is among the best. The instructors take the time to teach a technique, repeat it, go into the nuances of it, and have students apply it as they carefully monitor its application. They are always ready to answer questions knowledgeably and in detail. Mr. Harris especially, has never failed to surprise me with the thoughtful responses to questions that he has obviously spent countless hours preparing for. I don't ask too many questions--usually because I don't know what I don't know, and don't think to ask--but when I do, I am quite pleased with the thoughfulness of each instructor's response. In studying BJJ, I've found patience is truly a key... I learned you have to crawl before you can walk, then walk before you can run. It takes time and commitment --both from yourself and your instructor-- to really be successful.

The commitment and leadership of Mr. Harris, Mr. Baldwin, Brad, Phil, Mars, Dustin, Al, and the rest of the Harris family have truly inspired me in my journey through JKD/Kali and BJJ. And yes, it really is a family-environment--you go to learn and share, and grow together; the focus is on technical application of effective, practical self-defense, in a genuinely positive place. I have truly appreciated learning from, training with, and developing camaraderie with everyone I have trained with at the Harris Academy. Thank you.

Bottom Line: If you want to learn the intimate technical details, nuances, and effective application of JKD and BJJ in a fun, respectful learning environment, the Harris Academy is the place to be.

I trained at The Harris Academy for three months. I strongly believe that it has the best instruction out of all the gyms that teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego. Most of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are taught by Jeff Baldwin, a black belt under Roy Harris. The advanced Jeet Kune Do and Kali Ilustrisimo are taught by Roy Harris, one of the best instructors of martial arts in the world.

My training was limited to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. The instruction by Jeff was great. He has a good way of explaining things, a good eye that can see errors that need correcting, and genuinely cares that you not only understand how to perform the technique, but also the context of the technique being taught. If you ask a question, he'll actually take the time to talk about your personal jiu-jitsu progression with you. He will then help you out by giving you hints and tips that will help you improve your game.

Unlike some other gyms, The Harris Academy is a place where people truly leave their ego at the doorstep. It is not a place where you need to worry for your safety because of overly aggressive people. The people that train here are friendly and will only turn up the heat if they know you are prepared and ready for it. Also, this is not a paranoid gym worried about visitors stealing away secret techniques. You learn everything the right way from the beginning, regardless if you are new or have been at the academy for a while; everyone is given close attention, regardless of competition aspirations or skill.

I highly recommend training here whenever you have the chance. I thoroughly enjoyed my three months training at The Harris Academy, and I cannot wait to visit and train there again.
