I highly recommend the Alexander Homestead to anyone getting married in Charlotte, NC. Even from the beginning when Renee first called me, it has been a pleasant experience. When we met with Joy, she explained everything so perfectly that we booked the venue without even looking at any others! The next couple steps were made via email, and when we finally met Amanda, she seemed to be more excited for us than we were! At first I was a bit worried about talking to so many different people during the process, but Renee, Joy, and Amanda were so confident about the experience that I quickly became trusting of each of them. The day of the wedding could not have been any better. Amanda handled it like a champ... I probably would have fell apart without her! Afterwards, we realized I left a wedding band at the venue, and Amanda mailed it to me. I wish I could have a wedding every weekend!

When we first went to look at Alexander Homestead for our wedding, we fell in love with the gorgeous grounds. We met with Caroline who promised they would be there with us every step of the way while we planned our wedding to ensure everything went smoothly. That was the opposite of what happened. Throughout our 11 month planning process, we were met with unwillingness to work with some of our simple requests. I could not get in touch with the coordinator, they were not open to meeting with us other than the final meeting which was a month before our wedding. The coordinator we did have at the beginning quit working there, and no one notified us that we would have someone else working with us.

At this point, I decided I needed to hire a day of coordinator because nothing was done to ensure our day would go smoothly. Finally, we were able to get in touch with Amanda who seemed more willing to help us. I scheduled a site check for my florist, my florist arrived a few minutes before I did, when the staff at Alexander let her on the property, they told her to stay in her car and they would come get her when we arrived. I was humiliated that a vendor would be treated like that, but the staff at Alexander has a reputation for treating vendors who were not hired through them poorly. For our final meeting, I felt like Amanda was very accommodating, she even apologized for the poor treatment of our florist. I was starting to feel some relief.

On the day of our rehearsal, they had some men on site trimming large portions of a tree in the middle of the property. When I asked Amanda if this would be cleaned up before tomorrow (the wedding day), she told me that it would not be an issue. I did not think twice about it. The next day (my wedding day), 2 hours before my husband (then Fiancee) was supposed to be on site, he received a phone call from someone from Alexander stating that they were going to have to cancel our wedding because of this tree, but they were able to cable it up so it would not fall, so we were still going to be able to have our wedding. There were tree limbs and debris that were covering the walkway to the barn where the reception was going to be held. We had to go into the other side of the barn, where there was no clear path to the dance floor. They offered us to come on site another time to have pictures taken (meaning I would have to pay for the photographer, tuxes, hair and makeup and for all our out of town attendees to come back) and they also told my husband, and later, my Dad, that they would give us a 10% discount for our trouble. They never called my parents - who were paying for the bill.

I am very unhappy with the way they handled the situation. From the beginning they had told us about this tree that had been there for 200 years, and they were trying to keep it alive. They knew for a long time that this tree needed help. I would like to think that a venue that has weddings every weekend, more could have been done to ensure this tree was not a issue. After the wedding, my Dad tried to discuss this with the staff at AH, I believe he finally spoke to Don and Caroline's son. My Dad was met with a dismissive attitude, AH said that they gave us a beautiful wedding that was the best they could have done under the circumstances and that there was no need for any further discussion. They never once apologized to me, my husband, or my parents for any inconvenience. While our pictures are gorgeous (mainly thanks to our fabulous photographer and florist) and the food was great, Alexander Homestead has a lot to learn about being a wedding venue. I would not recommend to any of our newly engaged friends to even look at Alexander because of our poor treatment throughout this whole process. I would not have gone through the trouble to go this in depth for a review if we had received a sincere apology. Coming from a "Christian" family and company, I find this to be the most disappointing fact of all.
