What a relief it was to see my son finally find an activity that he really enjoys. We tried most of the traditional sports but the competitive environments were just too much for him. After one class at 5 Elements my son was convinced that he wanted to come back, and so was I. The kids worked together to learn and exercise. The staff are very friendly and professional. I had a great time sitting with other parents in the lobby watching the class. The kids had so much fun even though they were working very hard. It has been 3 months since I found this martial arts school and my son is more focused now and doing better socially and in school. We are both very happy.

My 6 year old daughter loves her Kung Fu classes. They are both fun and teach valuable self defense and life skills. Sifu Mario and Instructor Ben are wonderful with kids. My wife and I are so happy that we found 5 Elements Martial Arts & Wellness Center and expect that our daughter will be going to martial art classes there for a long time.

My 10-year-old son has been at this school since it opened in December 2010, and he loves it. I toured several schools before selecting 5 Elements. This school was head and shoulders above the rest. Sifu Mario and Instructor Ben teach self-defense in a fun, uplifting, and safe environment. The requirements for promotions are well-defined, and the school uses a review system to make sure that children are promoted as soon as they have earned it. Because the promotions are based on merit rather than time at the school, my son has had a sense of pride and accomplishment with each advancement. This school has enhanced my child's self-discipline, confidence and focus. Sifu Mario and Instructor Ben have also been extremely professional with me. They have been more than happy to answer any question that I have had. You will not find a better martial arts school in San Diego.

Unprofessional and unsatisfactory experience with this martial arts studio and the owner/instructor overall. Found this to be a waste of my time and my money. Did not feel valued as a customer. I do not feel I got what I paid for, nor did I get what was promised in regard to the training. The overall experience was not only a huge waste of time, but also extremely frustrating and upsetting. Lots and lots of problems with this place and I would not subject anyone to the disrespectful treatment we got here.
I cannot and would not recommend them for adults and definately not for children at any age.

Business Response:

This was a most unfortunate situation. What had been an amicable relationship for years sadly soured when I did not award this parent's son a black belt that he was progressing towards, but had not yet earned. I had taught this parent's son at another school for years. When I first opened 5 Elements Martial Arts and Wellness Center (in December 2010) with a well-qualified martial artist and business entrepreneur, Keith Jacobson, we were blessed with a tremendous outpouring of support from many students, parents and friends who came to help finish the new facility. Even the student who is the subject of this review came with his father to help paint the new school, and we are grateful for their contribution. This student’s family was extremely supportive and gave me many compliments on my instruction and my expectations of the students. One thing that I implemented at 5 Elements is a system for student promotions that is based primarily on skill proficiencies. The requirements for promotions are spelled out in our curriculum book, which is distributed to the students. Their progress is evaluated through individual reviews as well as observations made during class time. The results are recorded and students are given feedback to help them obtain their goals. When this parent approached me about her son not having earned his black belt, I met with them at the school and spent hours talking to them on the phone. Additionally, I spent time outside of class hours explaining and demonstrating the skills required for her son to obtain a black belt. I explained to her that obtaining a black belt requires a high level of commitment and an enormous amount of practice. I showed the parent her son’s master progress sheet and explained to her exactly what he had accomplished and what he still needed to do. Her son was only attending class once or twice a week (not nearly enough to promote to black belt), and though he was progressing, he was just not progressing at the rate that his mother thought he should have been. She was obviously upset at the situation, but I was not willing to reduce the school to a “black belt factory” by awarding a promotion that clearly was not deserved at that time. I have been teaching martial arts for more than 14 years and am honored to have my own business doing something that I love. This school is a family owned business. Both my business partner and I have young children that attend the school. My business partner and I value all of our students and always strive to insure their safety and to maintain the highest quality of instruction and customer satisfaction. The many positive reviews that 5 Elements has received are a testament to this. It is unfortunate that this parent did not allow her son to continue kung fu as he would certainly, in time, have earned his black belt and would have experienced the true sense of accomplishment that comes with it.
