.

Our infant was at Custom House (downtown Denver) from 4 months to 12 months (2010). In the beginning, I thought they did a pretty good job, wasn't overly thrilled but I figured it's daycare and I can't have too high expectations. I was a new mom and concerned I might be expecting too much. As time went on, my opinion of the care my infant was receiving steadily declined.
My primary concerns:
(1) During the 8 months my infant was in the infant room, there were staff turnover issues. Communication to parents re. staffing changes was non-existant. We were given no introduction to the new staff member, nor information on their background or experience with children. One day we would walk in and there would be a new teacher in someone's place. Open communication with parents re. staffing changes did not happen.
(2) On numerous occasions, walking into the infant room and having my 10 month old who was working hard on crawling and pulling himself up was strapped into a rocker chair so the "babies could play" as I was told.
(3) In the 8 months my child was there, I never saw a teacher reading a book to my child or any other child (only the Director would come in and read while covering a break/lunch).
(4) Teacher/infant ratios regularly going over 5:1 state limit. (During the first couple hours in the mornings they would combine the 2 infant rooms so there would be 1 teacher and one classroom open for drop off. All parents would be dropping babies off to one room (saw ratio as high as 7 or 8 on several occasions, typical was 6). I talked to the Dir about all of the above concerns and was not taken as seriously as I feel I should have been. This is not a horrible place by any means, there are alot of caring staff who work hard but overall, mediocre care is my best description. The best decision I made was moving my child to another facility. He is thriving and we are thrilled at the care and attention he is receiving.
