Horrible - not only did I leave unhappy with my haircut, but the girl who cut it, Diana, neglected to tell me that she was going on vacation for two weeks, even though she knew that I wasn't happy with the cut and would be coming back

This is a great place!

Convenient since it's right across from my work, but it also has a warm, welcoming environment. The blowouts are wonderful and just what I need.

I started going to James Bentley because it was near my work - when our office moved to queens I still make the (now CRAZY) commute on my lunch break from Queens to the far west side because I won't let anyone else touch my hair!

Linda rescued me from 100% the worst stacked bob hair cut of all time about 2 years ago (I did not think my hair could be saved, and she saved it), and she's been doing my hair ever since. I'm about to go back again and have her do a pixie cut on me - I've been thinking about going super short for a long time now and she's been so great at cutting my hair shorter in stages, and always listening to what I have to say!

The service was quick and left my long locks beautiful. Julia left my hair healthy and cut it just how I asked. I will be returning to her for all my hair care needs, she was polite, friendly and talanted; as was the salon overall. Everything is fairly priced and there was no pressure to spend on treatments that were unneeded. Thanks for the perfect NYC cut!

Joe was wonderful and I loved this salon. Who knew a salon could have ambiance. The music was light and interesting and the hairstylist Joe was caring, meticulous, and professional. I was impressed with his sincere care of doing my Brazilian keratin and i have coarse hair.
I had a recent bad experience at a previous salon that did my keratin and I came here to have it redone. Thanks so much for doing my BKT lovely!!

About me and hair:

I am a black Haitian girl with natural afro textured 4z hair. The past 2 years I've been growing out my relaxer because I couldn't find someone who loves my hair as much as I do. I have not visited a salon in the past 2 years for washing, combing, cutting of any kind because I've developed HSA (hair salon anxiety. It's real, look it up). I wanted to try the BKT bc now that my hair is longer, it's more dense and frizzier.

My Consult:

I visited 3 salons that do brazilian keratin of different kinds (I don't care about the chemicals/formaldehyde- I've been using relaxers with ridiculous chemicals for 10 years, I'm OK- thanks). At my consult with Joe at James Bentley, I explained to him I wanted BKT with a cut and color. He told me he would be using the Marcia Texiera treatment and products. We went through the steps and how I would do the color first. He called over the colorist to explain what I wanted and assured me that he has done this before and it would be great for my hair.

So..

I loved it! The salon is open, organized and clean. A little quieter than the Dominican salons I used to frequent in BK. Joe (BKT installer) was engaging, instructive and didn't do anything outside of what we agreed upon like, burn my hair. He was gentle and patient and answered all of my questions. We trashed celebs and still managed to mention something about hair health.

Julia, my cut/colorist, was agreeable on the personality front. She lost some points because she tried to cut my hair while it was wet and in it's shrunken state with this tiny-a** comb. It worked, but I think it took longer than it should have. I felt like I could trust her so I let it go. I showed her a myriad of photos that I wanted my hair to look like but I told her I didn't want to go too light. Turns out, I do. She said I could come back if I didn't like it and get the color re-done.

PROS:

I can get an appointment without having to kill anyone. I can move my appointment without being killed.
They know what their talking about. This shouldn't be a pro but not everyone that opens a salon knows hair.
My color didn't come out the way I wanted it but I can GO BACK FREE OF CHARGE TO CORRECT IT (Say whaat?)
The prices aren't outrageous. I mean I got a BKT which, is a lot of money anywhere you go. They normally (no groupon etc) have a good price and I didn't have to book through lifebooker because Joe gave me the online price without me having to show my boobs.
My BKT was exactly what Joe said it would be because, well, he knows what he's talking about.

CON:

Joe left me for another person! We went over my appointment time and his new appointment came in. I can't tell you how jealous I was. He did leave me with another executive stylist that knows BKT as well so I wasn't in terrible hands but I know some women who would not want to be left alone. I was able to experience Linda so that was a win.

Note: I met the owner and he also agreed that I could get my hair corrected. I don't know if this is standard practice but its always good to keep the lines of communication open so you don't leave mad.

I truly cannot even begin to express to you how lucky I am to have stumbled across the James Bentley Salon. I will never trust my hair to another stylist besides Joe Lupo ever again! From start to finish, each experience at James Bentley has just been phenomenal and I have never received more compliments on my hair in my entire life. Time and time again, I am just blown away: Joe does the most BEAUTIFUL job! The location is convenient, the service is incredible, and I guarantee you will be spoiled from the moment you walk through that door! This salon deserves the highest of high recommendations!!!

Since moving to the city 6 years ago, I could never find a place I loved that I could afford? until I found James Bentley Salon. The staff is friendly and the salon is clean and conveniently located near my office in Midtown West.

I donated 8 inches of hair in December and had the cut done at James Bentley. That can be traumatic for some people but my stylist Manuel did a beautiful job. I??ve come back to him since then not just because of the numerous compliments I??ve gotten on the cut, but also because Manuel is so positive and upbeat. He makes it a great experience.

I highly recommend this place!

I adore this salon. I first heard about it through Lifebooker, but have now been coming back for almost a year. Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable and I couldnt be happier with my hair.

Manuel has been my main stylist and is a master of color and cut. I let him take the reigns and I always look great.

They are also on the cutting edge of color technology and are really sensitive to my fears about ruining my hair texture with dyes.

All in all, I wouldnt trust anyone else!

I have been going to James Bentley Salon for years now. I found it through Lifebooker, and I couldn't have made a better decision. I love that I'm not passed around to the hair washer, the color person, the cut person, and the blow dry person. One executive designer does everything! It's fab! If you love forming a relationship with your stylist, this is the place for you.

I'm a highlight/lowlight person, so that gets pricey to maintain, but at this salon it's not too bad. I highly recommend booking through Lifebooker. I've had great experiences with Linda, Joe and Manuel. You can't go wrong with any of them! I also love that the staff is loyal to one another. There is no drama within this place whatsoever. It's just calm, quiet and relaxing.

Go pamper yourself! Do it now at James Bentley Salon!

It's $30 for a blow out. My blow out was very nice and natural and they only use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners which is nice if you get keratin treatments. I highly recommend this salon.

I purchased a certificate for a Brazilian Keratin Treatment from Lifebooker back in July. I saw that the certificate was expiring at the end of the month so I hurried to book an appointment at the James Bentley Salon.

I was a little intimidated walking into the salon since I'm a Westchester girl and have never gone to the city for a haircut or treatment. I shouldn't have been worried... from the moment I set foot in there, Joe was so welcoming!

I got a haircut and the BKT and he was so helpful throughout the whole process. He asked me some questions before we started and let me know what to expect from the treatment. I was a little nervous bringing up the coupon, but Joe was so friendly and didn't make me feel like I was cheap for buying a coupon online for this service.

The whole process took about three hours, and there was never an awkward moment. Joe was extremely friendly, was asking questions about me, my life, and was very eager to talk and chat about anything. I felt like I was getting my hair done by a friend! The haircut was great, and I loved how it looked.

At the end, he gave me printed instructions on how to take care of my hair for the four days before I could wash out the treatment, and told me he would call to follow up. I found this extremely helpful and referred to this sheet during the days that followed.

After the four days were up, I was extremely eager to shower and see the results. I was a little skeptical, and wanted to let my hair air dry completely to see what it would look like (as opposed to the giant poof that it used to become when wet) but in the end I grabbed the hair dryer to help it along. My hair took literally 5 minutes to dry straight! It was perfectly smooth in the end, and so so soft.. I know it's not a straightening treatment and I can wear my hair wavy still if I like, but I was still surprised by how quickly my hair straightened out by just running my fingers through it while blow drying.

I loved the BKT, and will definitely do it again in 3-4 months. I will definitely come back to the James Bentley Salon and ask for Joe!

I had a great experience from start to finish. Nice, modern, sun lit, spacy studio with a good ambience. My goal was to get a haircut and highlights(my hair is thin blonde). As soon as I came in, I was greeted by my hair stylist Julia. She was a sweetheart and knew exactly what I needed from the start. She asked few questions about my hair, what I wanted to accomplish and just after few minutes she understood my needs right away. Overall, she listened carefully, did not try to sell products and took the time with everything that she did. She also checked with me periodically in order to make sure that I was happy.

At the end, she also advised me on what I can do to make my hair better and invited me to come back in a week in order to assess how I like my highlights and if there is anything I am not happy with ?? she would like correct it for free. In addition, before I left salon ?? I was given a complimentary package for a deep conditioner and stylish blow dry for the following weeks as well.
So I highly recommend this studio. Great experience and I would go back there and recommend it to my good friends. Ask for Julia ?? she is young, stylish and very easy going.

I would rate the service with a 0, if there was an option.

THIS IS A NO NOOOOO NOOOOOOOO GO, (IN EVERY SENSE OF THOSE WORDS)

I have NEVER, felt so compelled to write a review for any business (whether good or bad) before, until I experienced the following:

DO NOT STEP FOOT INTO THIS BUSINESS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED LIKE A NOBODY AND UNAPPRECIATED.

I will never forget this experience I had with this salon. It's so vivid in my mind that I can write verbatim what the "Executive Director" said to me that got me extremely angry!

I had the WORST, BY FAR the WORST experience ever here!
I bought a deal online for partial highlights. Booked my appointment on a Friday, July 2010 after work about 6:30pm. Got upstairs, and to be surprise, it was empty, all but with one client. I wondered to myself - would it be empty on a Friday evening after work? However, didn't think much of it until it all came full circle once I left.

The "Executive Director' greeted me at the door and proceeded to explain the choice of colors that I could go with to get the highlights I wanted. Fast forward, came time to wash out the dye. Made very small talk and he had the audacity to say "NOT TO MAKE YOU FEEL BAD BUT WE'RE NOT MAKING MONEY FROM YOU". Excuse me???? Proceeding to the blowdrying part, he blow-dried my hair only to the point where the highlights were barely noticeable. My hair had still been SOPPING WET as if I had just came out of the shower and just enough so it wasn't dripping water. Perhaps it wasn't dripping water, but it was EXTREMELY WET, still as if it had just been towel-dried for a minute. I nicely asked him if he could blow-dry it more, so I wouldn't leave the salon looking like that!!! He even dared to say and ask me in the most condescending, belittling tone -

"WHY, DO YOU WANT TO PAY FOR IT?" in those exact same words!!! What a shame!!! First off, for a new client, who talks to ANYONE like that? especially in a service business??? Of course I said no to paying $30 as I simply needed him to only completely DRY my hair not style it, which he could have easily understood. I was extremely nice about it, and just let it go. In fact, I paid and was prepared to give him the standard gratuity. (Yes, I was TOO NICE about it).I had it on the counter ready to give it to him. Before leaving, I brought up the situation to him and told him I thought he was rude. He blatantly denied it and said "I wasn't being rude". Instead, I decided not to, based on his words, "Please, I don't need your money" in those same exact words. He proceeded to continue and say "I make good money", etc. etc. I stormed out of the salon and vowed never, ever to step foot into their salon.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW HOW JAMES BENTLEY'S BUSINESS OPERATES, SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. DON'T DEAL WITH THEIR HOITY-TOITY CONDESCENDING, PRETENTIOUS, TRASHY BEHAVIOR.

Perhaps he was offended that I gave him my honest opinion when he asked what I thought of the outcome. Though my response had been a simple, "It will take some time getting used to it." All in all, that type of behavior is UNACCEPTABLE and SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED.

Go somewhere else where your business is always appreciated and you are treated with kindness, respect and sincerity.

I came upon James Bentley Salon through a discounted deal for a Brazilian Keratin Treatment through the service BuyWithMe!com (please use my referral URL if you're thinking of signing up! www!buywithme!com/ref/WRCQ676P) Before my appointment, I went online to read some reviews from other clients, and I was really worried about the quality of the service I'd receive based on some negative reviews of Linda and the salon in general from Yelp!com. But I went ahead with my appointment anyway.

The stylist that did the BKT on me was Joseph, although Linda was there too, performing a BKT on another client. I paid attention out of the corner of my eye, to see if others' complaints about her had any merit. Well, honestly, I don't know what the other reviewers who called Linda bitchy had experienced, but Linda was perfectly good-natured and very accommodating to her client, I saw first-hand.

Even more important was the top-quality service that I'd received from Joseph. I got the BKT hoping to see some relaxation in my naturally-curly, straightening-resistant hair. After the 4 day no-wash window was over, I washed my hair and let it dry naturally to see if the curls had relaxed at all. I called Joseph (who had been very adamant when I first left the salon that I follow up with him a week later to let him know how I like the results) to express that I was a little bit disappointed in the lack of noticeable difference in the texture of my hair following treatment, and you know what? He invited me back to the salon the very next day, where he performed a second treatment on me using the "chocolate" formula, free of charge. Four days later, after washing, my hair was so soft and frizz-free, and I finally saw a loosening of the curls that I'd been hoping for. Joseph took complete care of me, offering his time, materials and skills to ensure that I was pleased with the results, at no additional cost to me. This speaks volumes about their commitment to customer satisfaction, in my opinion.

I just want to add that while I was in Joseph's chair the second time, Linda's client from the week before came in to buy a shampoo, and she was raving about how happy she was with the BKT Linda had performed on her. She said she'd gotten stuck in the downpour the night before, and she was shocked that her hair did not frizz up or get ruined by the rain. She was really pleased with the job Linda had done on her. Furthermore, Linda was there during my second visit, once again in perfectly good-natured spirits, laughing and having a fun conversation with the girl in her chair. To the reviewers who called Linda nasty, I really feel you may have just caught her on a bad day. Ultimately, we're all human and are prone to having an off day (or series of days) every so often. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Linda based on those few reviews. She's really quite delightful, and a talented stylist, and if you still have your doubts, well, at least go to Joseph because he's just plain awesome.

Having been to many 'Top' salons on Madison Ave
I know how much color and cuts cost. I recently found James Bentley after moving to the West Side and I can tell you that I have been astonished that they can provide the same level of service that I have become accustomed to at less than half the price.
Salon is beautiful too.

Pros: Nice Staff,

Cons: Easy to miss not at street level

it's the worst salon i have ever been to. The staff is indifferent but the OWNER is so damn rude to the clients. The staff ruined the hair color for a friend and instead of rectifying the mistake, the owner jumps in and refuses to change the color or satisfy the client. Rather he asked for more money. The staff does a different hair color and then disappers for a while and when comes back, the client sees a totally different color. The staff apparently mixed two shades and applied a different color than what was asked for. THE OWNER IS RUDE. I would not recommend going to this salon.

I went to the place because it offered half price discounts and is in my neighborhood. The salon is very nice, clean, spacious and Juliet was very nice.
However after telling her i wanted to keep my natural look and just go a dab lighter she burned bleached my hair.
When noticed what she had done she put a glaze over it.
I am back home and this is horrible. I have blotches s all over and it is completely ruined. It will take many, many months of deep treatment to have it decent again.
I WILL NEVER EVER GO THERE AGAIN OR RECOMMEND THE PLACE...
I have a feeling Juliet was clueless.

I have been a customer of Didi's for several years. I am very particular about my hair and she never let's me down. She is professional, personable, extemely capable and most of all a great listener. Didi understands exactly the style I am looking for and always delivers. Also, the James Bentley salon is terrific. It is very clean and well staffed, with a professional and stylish atmosphere. The service is great and the prices are reasonable. I highly recommend Didi and the James Bentely Salon.

I've never written a review before. i was going to commend Penny on the great haircut and her friendly, professional attitude.i was in the neighborhood and thought I would give this salon another chance. my interest was piqued by the over complimentary review about Linda titled LINDA commenting that she would love to remove a negative one. i don't see any such post. This review made her sound like she's Frederic Fekkai. i've heard that a merchant can have negative postings removed and it look like that's what happened. this LINDA post sounds very self complimentary as if she wrote it (merchants do that to detract from the genuinely negative ones) or a friend or family member did. I would have loved to know what it said. I read enough of these reviews in general, and whenever it's overly complimentary, and sounds too much like an ad, it most likely is written by the business (or hairstylist) itself. It seems most common with salons and spas.

I was at this salon well over one year ago and Linda gave me the worst haircut. It was too short. I never complained because there was nothing to fix, it was too short and not what I wanted after discussing it with her. It didn't grow in nicely either. I just never went back since I don't frequent that neighborhood. I also didn't find Linda so professional, knowledgable and charming as her posts seem to indicate. These posts make her sound like Hairdresser of The Year! I found her to be very sad.

There is a risk when it's your first time. I didn't post anything negative, but after seeing all these self complimentary posts it prompted me. Citysearch, what about freedom of speech? You should leave bad posts up as well as complimentary.

Back to why I posted - I was very happy with the service that Penny provided and I would see her again when I'm in the neighborhood. the salon is very big and the price is right. There are other stylists too, yet the posts only compliment LINDA. Mmmmmm.

Okay, I just read an unfavorable review about Linda, and just had to imagine that this women has some sort of personal vendetta against her. Linda is James Bentley's finest asset. She has a remarkable amount of patience, and her manner is so caring and focused, that I wish I could just delete that other review, as it's clearly written by someone who lacks those qualities herself. Just to reiterate, Linda is the best hairdresser I have ever had. Hands down. She is a joy to work with, and her cuts are always detail-oriented and precise. You will love her as your hairdresser.

I have been a very loyal customer for almost 3 years now. I am extremely particular about my hair and have been to many salons around the country. James Bentley is exceptional! The service is wonderful, the prices are very reasonable and my hair has never looked better. I highly recommend Linda, especially for color. My hair is very long and very blond. Although I go often, my hair has never been healthier. Linda really knows how to care for hair and get the perfect shade of blond for my skin tone. Go now...you won't regret it!!!

I just returned from my second visit to James Bentley to have my hair cut and styled by Didi. I couldn't be more pleased. The salon is very convenient for me because I work in the same building but despite this, I was a little nervous about trying something new after being with the same stylist for 12 years. I read a very positive review about Didi on another website and decided to make an appointment. It was a positive experience from start to finish. In fact, I have never had a hair cut last as long or grow out so nicely. She also gave me some good advice about improving the health of my hair. I was very impressed.

One of my colleagues tried the salon for the first time at the same time I did. Her stylist was Pinney. She went back for her second visit today with the same result....excellent hair cut and style.

The location may be a bit out of the way for some but it is definitely worth the trip. The salon is clean and spacious, the prices are very reasonable and the staff, based on what I've seen and experienced, are top notch.

James Bentley is awesome. I've been a loyal customer for a year and a half. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. They're always smiling and I love to see them everytime I go.

The staff is very attentive and helpful in working with you to get the best result for your hair.

I love the color they use, I feel like it doesn't completely ravage my hair, and it doesn't smell funny. They also have offer scalp treatments which make my hair super shiny and adds volume. Also smells really good. And you get a great massage for your head. I actually just got one today and got a haircut, too. My hair looks and feels lovely.

Let's see, what else

The place is very spacious. It's not cramped like other salons.

It's kind of a pain to get there from the subway, but just allow yourself a few extra minutes for the walk.

This is definitely a great place to go if you're looking for great hair at a decent price. Ask for Linda or Juliette.

I think that's it. Just check it out next time you need your hair done.

I so regret getting my hair cut here. After the first wash at home I was able to confirm my suspicion that the hair on my right side of my head was almost 1 inch longer than the hair on my left side. And, since I had so much taken off, I want to wait for my hair to grow before I get it fixed so that it won't be too short.

Even if you forget the length discrepancy, the haircut is not a good one. Please note that I haven't had such a bad haircut in over 20 years - my hair is long and pretty straight - I do have a lot of hair, so I don't know if that is what caused the difficulty.

It took me over a year to find a superb colorist, and I finally discovered him two weeks ago at James Bentley on West 57th. Upon walking into the beautiful and spacious salon, I was warmly greeted by Andrew Glenn. I challenged him, "Impress me!" He sat me down for a thorough consultation, making sure he knew exactly what I was looking for, color-wise. I went with 3/4 highlights, and he mixed in three different shades of blonde... giving my hair beautiful dimension and shine.

I'm very pleased. It was definitely worth the walk to the west side of town. :-)

I've been all over the city and exhausted most hair salons. A friend told me she just went to J. Bentley and she recommended Linda, one of the exec. designers. I saw Linda today for a wash/cut/blow dry and she did a great job. She listens, she gives advise, she takes her time and she knows how to cut hair, and the whole experience there was very mellow and professional. I highly recommend Linda and would go back again in a NY minute. And their prices for the city... really reasonable!

This is more than just the friendliest salon in New York City. The team of stylists are all concerned about your hair as a team. Many times when I'm getting my hair styled, other stylists will pipe in with their comments and suggestions..it's as if a family is cutting your hair and they are all equally concerned that you walk out blissfully happy. Linda, my personal favorite is the IDEAL stylist if you are the least bit neurotic about your hair and need extra hand holding. She'll analyze your hair piece by piece until you walk out with the best haircut you've ever had. (She's also great at correcting the mistakes of other stylists). I can't say enough good things..and to make it even more "too good to be true", their prices are ridiculously reasonable.

I recently went to this salon for the first time and was blown away. At first I was a little put off by the location (it's in a building and very west) but I soon found out it is well worth it. I had my hair cut and colored for less than $100 by a woman named Ligia. She understood what I wanted and explained to me everything she would need to do. Everyone there was very friendly and I didn't feel like I was being pressured into anything. I would definately go back.

This salon is great. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful. The prices are good and I was very happy with the cut, color, and blowout Felicia gave me. It's a lovely space and very clean. I also appreciate that the blowout is included in the price of a cut. This is rare in most salons, no matter how many services you may have or money you may spend, you are sent out with wet hair unless you want to spend another $45. I highly recommend James Bentley.

I tried this salon yesterday, after almost a year of "shopping around" other salons. Really great atmosphere, reasonable prices and I LOVED my cut and my highlights. Usually I am stuck at a salon for 2+ hours - they were able to finish in an hour and a half. They even dry your hair for free - I was getting used to walking home from other salons with wet hair after paying $200+!

I recommend Kristina for highlights and Stuart for a GREAT cut!
