Well this is a first. I went into pick up a to go order last night (10-22-11) at 11:30 pm like I have done numerous times over the years as I live in Hyde Park. Seated at the bar was a very drunk guy that looked at me the moment I walked

I have been eating at Hyde Park Bar & Grill on Duval for many years. I have always enjoyed going here and of course eating their totally famous Hyde Park fries (which are a must if you have never had them). The staff is always so friendly and the bartenders are the best. It's definitely like hanging at a neighborhood pub which is always fun! Don't miss Dave the bartender's fresh margaritas! This place is know as a down home cooking kinda place, which it is and they do it well, however they do have some really good healthy choices too such as their great salads and their mixed veggie stirfry. I love their homemade salad dressings too, yummo! So if you're new to town or have been dining at all of the other new places in town, don't forget about your neighborhood friendly Hyde Park Bar and Grill!

I love Hyde Park Bar & Grill ! I've had many dishes but my stand out favorite is the huge Spinach Salad. The spinach is always crisp, the other veggies are fresh and the dressing is perfect. And I can't keep my hands out the large plate of fries we always share.

Consistently good food and service at reasonable prices ... an easy choice !

Gotta love Hyde Park Bar & Grill! It's such an Austin favorite. I love the fries... but who doesn't? YUM! I love that in addition to their comfort food like chicken fried steak and hamburgers, they also have a delicious grilled chicken breast with oh-so-good mushroom sauce on it that feels like a healthy alternative. The service is great as well! The last time I was there the man taking the names for the wait list was soooo nice and he even remembered mine and my date's name when we were leaving and thanked us for coming and asked us to come again... Believe me I will!

The Southern Fried Chicken Breast is listed as costing $8.95 on the online menu. I ordered take-out and was charged $10.45. I did not mention the discrepancy because I like to trust people and realized that I may have been mistaken. When I got home, I checked and I was indeed misled, cheated, stolen from or however you would like to put it. To top things all off, after I signed my check, the bartender asked me if I would total it up for him. I took that as a kind way of asking for a tip. I did not tip because I do not normally tip on take-out orders. Simply put, I was lied to and I will never again return to the Hyde Park Bar & Grill.

If you're in Austin for more than a week, you pretty much need to stop by here just to say you did. Sample the fries for sure. When I'm super hungry I go for a burger and fries or a steak. In less ravenous times, the turkey burger with pesto is great, or the Asian chicken salad, or a plate of sides. I like the sweet potatoes and greens. It's a place where you can hear your companion unlike some spots where the music or the atmosphere is too loud. And your vegetarian friends have some decent options, too.

This old house converted to a restaurant has the advantage of several small side rooms, so its not always as noisy as some places in town.

Really diverse, affordable menu with nice veggie options keeps me coming back for more.

Pros: the Fries - a half order will feed 4 people.

Cons: environment is slightly run down.

.

they add an undisclosed $1.50 for each item for takeout. A meal for the family will cost an extra $7 - 9 dollars for the hidden takeout charge. Make sure you check the order because they will charge you for items that they forget to include.

What's happened to this once wonderful place? Has it been haunted by a ghost chef who thinks his/her fried chicken actually has flavor (tasteless breading, tasteless chicken meat). Has serving a roast pork in a bowl swimming in gravy become vogue? Try disgusting. Do you really not seat a party of three in a nearly empty restaurant when one party is running late? Do you then try to seat the party at the crossroads of the kitchen and bar, and upon protest seat them in a nearly empty room NEXT to the only other party in the room. And, unlike times in the past, the wait staff was well just .... okay.

My husband and I love the Hyde Park Bar and Grill. The menu has a wide selection from chicken to seafood to steak. The food is always delicious and prepared exactly how you asked.

I've been a regular customer of the Duval location for several years, so I thought I'd see what citysearch thought of it. I was so surprised to read the previous review that I wanted to post my own. The management staff is always at the front door, ready to help in any way. The waitstaff is friendly and obviously enjoy working there, and the food is always exactly what you want . Also thier desserts are delicious. Try the bumbleberry pie!

Like many others, I USED to be a fan, until my most recent visit this past weekend. The food was tolerable, but what was the most unpleasant was the service. When we entered, no one greeted us, and when we were brought to our table, the host seemed irritated that he had to actually work. Actually, I would say that most of the servers had an irritable attitude. We felt this was strange, since we were not needy customers at all, only requested what we needed, like condiments and what not. No one smiled. This place just had an overall drab vibe to it. It wasn't the worst service of my life, but it was bad enough to make me never want to come here again, and I will also not recommend this to any of my friends, ever again.

Well, I've always gotten good food and good service here. I guess everyone can have an off-day. In any case, I recommend it. The Wom Kim peach pudding and the brownie dessert are to die for.

I'm sorry to say, we had a very dishonest, first-time dining experience. The wait was ok, the food was good, but the customer service was below average, and to top it off, watch your receipts! This was very unfortunate, especially during these times. Someone in the restaurant added $2 to the total bill; assuming this was done on the tip section. Grant it, we left over 20% even for the original tip and this still occurred! We have had this happen before so we keep an eye out and sure enough, it happened here. It is not the dollar amount, but the principle of the matter. How very unfortunate since we will not be attending this restaurant again and I will not recommend it. As for management? We'll see. I'll be visiting the establishment with my evidence and in my opinion, all staff who are hired and work there are direct representatives of their organization so maybe more effort should be taken when interviewing and hiring.

I had read so many great reviews on Hyde Park and Grill so I decided to give it a try (Westgate location). We had a short wait before the hostess came and showed us to a table. The waiter did not show up for at least five minutes and was not friendly at all. We spent more time waiting for him to show up than anything else. I could see him briefly standing around in the back. When our food arrived it was luke warm to say the least and my food was not cooked properly. Again - I had to wait until he decided to show up again to explain my food was not cooked properly. The food went to the kitchen only to come back cooked the same way. By this time, my daughter was almost done eating (note - how much time had passed). I told him I did not want to send this back to the kitchen again. There were no apologies - or would like to try something else on the menu. His attitude was totally tough. Marshall seemed like he rather be somewhere else rather than attending to our table. I felt like I was inconveniencing or cramping his day. Marshall - if I would not come to the restaurant you would not have a job. Oh - note - I would never recommend or go back to Hyde Park and Grill again. I had ordered a chopped steak dinner and my daughter had a fried egg sandwich with the famous fries. Neither of us thought the fries were all that. I like plain old french fries - crispy without batter. Food quality and temperature was a F and the outstanding - friendly service was no no where to be seen - another F. I would have to say among the worse restaurants I have ate and had service at in Austin. I also want to note the restaurant was very dirty and the place seemed very run down. My chair was stained and was wobbling so bad I thought I was going to fall to the ground. I think this place has seen its better days... go somewhere else.

I used to think this place was expensive when I was a broke grad student, but it's actually ok prices and I like that it's locally owned, in an old house in a regular neighborhood, with the best gellato outside of Italy right next door. The fact that it's NOT kid friendly is a plus for me, as I frequently I like to hang out with grownups. I don't mind well-behaved kids, but the fact that It's a BAR and grill, that ought to be a clue your 2 yr old is not the target customer demographic. The food is good, the fries are really special. Personally, I can't imagine paying money in a restaurant for an egg sandwich, certainly not 6.99 or whatever it is that is considerably more than the price of two breakfast tacos.

Sometimes the service has been really lousy at times, so bad we walked out after 15 minutes of noone even acknowledging our existnece after being seated, not a crust of bread, not a glass of water, no "we'll be right with you" or "we're really busy" (That would have been a lie, the restaurant was nearly empty). more than an hour before closing and vowed never to return, but we finally relented, because of the fries and the central location close to where we live, and they seem to have remedied that problem.

Pros: Mainly adult diners, central location, magic french fries, next door to best gelatto place ever

Cons: sometimes huge lines, cramped seating, service varies wildly depending on who's working at the time

I actually went to Hyde Park South with a gift certificate from someone and ended up spending more than the gift certificate. We have a family of four, my children are 5 and 8. The kids menus were ridiculously expensive ($6) and didn't include drinks. They ordered lemonade, which was $2.50 each! (Not home-squeezed, either!) I'm sorry, but $8.50 for a 30 pound 5 year old is ridiculous! The gift certificate barely covered my kids meals plus tax and tip, and that wasn't including our meals, which were okay, but also expensive. You would think with the overall price of our four meals and one drink each, that we had eaten fine dining in a fancy hotel, not a "Bar and Grill!" We wil not be returning and do NOT recommend it for anyone with children! Most Austin restaurants have us spoiled with consideration to people with children, so we were shocked. Oh, I didn't mention that the food took FOREVER to come, which is also not good for small children!

Hyde Park Bar and Grill is well known in Austin for its ambiance and , frankly, the best fries and chicken fried steak ever made. The fries are served with a jalapeno mayo dip that is to die for. The restaurant is located in a neighborhood of historically protected houses, and it fits right in since it, too, is just a little renovated house. It is quaint, the staff if professional and the food is excellent.

On my quest for a good pimento cheese sandwich - serious craving here! did some looking online and noticed that this restaurant offers one on the menu. Went to the Central location in Hyde Park and was treated to a great pimento cheese sandwich. There were cucumbers tomatoes and onions, which to my extensive southern experience is a little strange for this sandwich, but surprisingly worked and made the sandwich a little lighter too. The menu noted that the sandwich had jalapenos too, though they were not apparent in the taste. The host was quick in getting me seated. The parking lot is a mess, by the way, so I went about 8 pm to wait for the main rush to lessen. Found a spot and once inside got seated immediately. The order of fries is too much for one person to eat, though they taste great. There is a dipping sauce served with them that is not bad, but is very rich - it seems to have a mayonnaise base of some sort. Waiter was very polite and several different staff checked on the table to make sure things were ok. Seems that there is a team approach to service here. Not a huge concern except one hopes that there is tipsharing. The restaurant was clean. The waiter explained that once monthly - the second Monday, (which happened to be the day I visited) the restaurant closes for about 3 hours mid-day for a professional power cleaning. He explained that the entire kitchen and food prep areas out back are power cleaned with commercial washers to ensure the kitchen remains clean since the restaurant is an old house. There were several ceiling tiles that appeared to have had leaking in the past, but this did not in general detract from the cleanliness of the place. The coffee was fresh and was served with real cream vs. milk or half and half.

Recommend putting the pimento cheese on sourdough instead of the hoagie roll because things tend to spill out of the hoagie.

This is NOT a place I would take kids, though they offer a kid's menu

I have never before written an unfavorable review of a restaurant, but my recent dinner at the South location of the Hyde Park Bar and Grill was among the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The whole thing was made even worse by the fact that it was supposed to be a special occasion, which we'd been looking forward to for months.

Things got off to a bad start with the pre-dinner wine we ordered. I asked for a glass of the house Zinfandel, but when the waiter brought our wine my 'zinfandel' was a dark red wine with a very dry taste. The waiter insisted it was the Zinfandel, however, and I simply accepted it as such. My wife and I then ordered our burgers cooked medium-well.

When our food arrived I noticed that the meat was still red and uncooked at the center! Our waiter was nowhere to be seen, and it was several minutes before I managed to flag him down. After I showed him the burger he admitted it was undercooked and offered to have them cook me a new one. Since my wife's burger was satisfactorily cooked, she proceeded to eat her dinner while I waited for them to repair mine.

After several minutes another waitperson brought me a chicken-fried steak and asked if that was what I'd ordered. I said, "No. This is entirely wrong." I then explained everything that had happened. He assured me he would correct the problem and have my burger out immediately.

Sure enough, in a few minutes the second waiter reappeared with a well-cooked hamburger. He asked me to slice the burger while he waited, so he could be absolutely sure I was satisfied. This time, the hamburger was properly prepared. Unfortunately, by that time the french fries we'd ordered were cold and my wife had finished eating.

Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed with the whole experience. We have absolutely no intention of ever revisiting that Hyde Park Bar and Grill, and would unhesitatingly advise others to avoid it.

I had my first taste of Hyde Park Grill this weekend and would definitely return.

We just beat the dinner rush which grew quickly, so I recommend being prepared to wait or coming at a slow time. But there is a very lush bar to hang out while you wait for the table if you like.

Our server was attentive and quick. We ordered the baby fried portabello mushrooms which were hot and crispy without being a hard shell. The sauce was thick and delicious, very green and fresh tasting which set off the hot earthy taste of the mushrooms perfectly.

We ordered the horseshoe and the chicken fried steak. The fries come with everything. I had heard such great things about them but was surprised that their taste was actually just like a normal fry. I couldn't detest much special flavoring. However, the texture is really awesome and with the cheese and tomatoes on top were great to munch on.

The chicken fried steak was juicy and tender, with a sauce that was creamy and not over peppered.

The three of us each had a different dessert- the peach buttermilk cake was HUGE but served warm with cream and a heavy sweet end to the night. The pear/cherry turnover was a bit too bready for my taste but the fruit was very tart and tender. The buche du noel was a seasonal treat but silky and smooth- much more mousse than cake which was a nice surprise.

And the bill still came to less than $30 a person even with tip and drinks.

The look is cozy- dark woods and glass with local artist paintings spread around. Parking seemed to be difficult, but that's true of just about any popular place in Austin. Absolutely great!

Pros: Cozy food, reasonable prices, variety

Cons: Parking, crowds

I went in this restaurant with friends after having read that they have a "notable" chef. Notable at what I wonder?
The food was so mediocre and when we saw what appeared to be the chef and we laughed and thought he needed to put on some clean clothes. Then we wondered what the kitchen looked like. We were pretty grossed out. Who are the losers that think this place is great and the prices should be higher? .The person that wrote that sounds like a Hyde Park groupie or he or she works there.
Won't be going back.

I have been dining at Hyde Park Bar and Grill for many years. One of the nice things about it is you seldom have your meal spoiled by little children who should be home with a babysitter or in bed. Three children under Two!? Take the hint guy, sitting next to a table in restaurant with someone with 3 children under two also seems like an eternity.

Hyde Park Bar and Grill has a decent selection of food, albeit a little pricey. Although the food is decent, what is bad about Hyde Park's service is the "wait staff". Apparently the staff is underpaid or extremely underpaid. A co-worker and I ate lunch there one Friday, and after we paid the check and left, the wait staff came running after us and demanded a hefty tip claiming he was paid only $1 an hour and he needed money. Someone needs to explain to the owners and the staff that a tip is for service well done or better than expected, not for a normal order. In other words, a tip is a gratuity and should be a reward for better service rather than the norm.

Hyde Park Bar & Grill on Duval used to make the best Green Bean Casserole and now they dont make it anymore. The Salmon with pesto is really good, but in July of this year, i ordered the Flat Iron Steak and it was served pre-cut. I am a big girl, and can cut my own meat, thanks. What i received looked like fajitas.

Ok, I saw the review & sort of laughed "not hip" -- oh ok, so I have to eat in SoCo I guess to be "hip" now - that seems sooo Dallas to me. This place is psedu romantic, easy, not too much cash, quaint, and reliable food. SoCo seems like a bunch of old people trying to be cool way too hard to me. anyway....

The restaurant is in an old Hyde Park Cottage, and is filled with decent charm. During a busy lunch, even if there appears to be a large wait, I've never waited over 15 minutes.

If you ask me, when I tell people that I live in Hyde Park (I'm a transplant from Minneapolis) I get many "ooo's and aaaaa's" from young, hip, rich 20-30 somethings. So, the editor for Citysearch is a freak.
For example, I"m here right now because tonight, I have a dinner date with a friend that's a chic, she's hot, and guess where we'll go? I don't need to impress her, but we're not going to Chili's either. You'll spend not more than $15 per person on the high end.

No, the food isn't "stupendous" or AMAZING...it's just good, fast, and has the ambiance I listed above. The Tuna Steak Sandwich is a go to for a guy that works out and doesn't want a salad. The fries are buttermilk dipped -- weird, but tasty. The service I've always found impeccable -- 5 stars. The other people I see bitching are mostly those with kids - sorry, no restaurants that is even sorta trendy is going to be that good for kids you idiots.

If I owned it, YES I'd make it swankier, jack the menu prices by 40%, and probably figure out a way to get a rooftop patio area for more drink action...and you'd have a super star.

Pros: Fast service if you forgot to make a reservation, reliable food, reasonable prices

Cons: Not expensive enough, no patio for cocktails

First off, to be clear- this is for the DUVAL/CENTRAL location. There are some confusing postings here, and I almost didn't go to the restaurant based upon them. Then, I realized most of them were for the south location.

Secondly- WOW! My mother and I had lunch there today (Sunday), and we both were so impressed. The atmosphere was quaint, with local artwork on the walls. The waitstaff friendly and attentive. Seated quickly. And, the food? I had an omlette (for only $5.95) and my mother had the chicken fried steak (for $8.95). I liked my omlette, but the chicken fried steak was the winner here- cream gravy with flavor, good meat, excellent home-style fries. We're definitely going back. If you want "comfort" food for a value price... this is the place!

First off I love the Hide Park in Central Austin. I have lived in Austin for over 15 years. We moved to South Austin and were excited to have one so close. We had 3 children under 2 years so we can not wait over an hour to eat out. We call on the way down and was told there was no wait at 5:30. We get there in five minutes and was told the wait was almost an hour. I told the hostess that we called five minutes ago and she said there must have been a rush in the last 5 minutes. I looked around and there were less than 12 people waiting, and she stated she had 3 tables of 8-9. Did they come in one minute after we called and then everyone ran to the cars to wait. I asked for the manager and the waitress said she would get him. She proceeded to sit the next table and when she came back proceeded to seat the next table. I was upset and asked if she was going to get the manager and just then a guy walked up with an apron and a serving tray, she said this guy is asking for the manager and he proceeded to ask if he could help me. Im pretty sure he was not on the management team but decieded not to cause a scene. I explained that I just called 5 minutes a go in the car and he looks at the list and says' "well there must have been a rush in five minutes. There were at least 5 tables outside and 1/2 dozen inside that were set up and not used. I stated that the person should have checked the list before saying there was no wait. Even though an hour might not be that long, it is an eternity for 3 children under 2 to wait for an hour and then sit for another hour. Its the sole reason for calling minutes ahead. The possibility of 3 tables of 9 coming in in five minutes at 5:30pm and then waiting somewhere else other than the front is not likely. I can't wait till this Hyde Park down south closes and a better run restaurant opens up. I looking forward to coming back in the fall of 2007.

Pros: there is the original in central Austin

Cons: service, can't say much about the rest since we could not get in, but by the other comments- the central location is worth the extra 30 minute commute

When I moved here from Chicago last year I was told I'd get the best burger and best fries Texas has to offer at HPB&G. If you Google Best Burger in Austin it'll come up. Screwing up burgers and fries (especially at a place that's apparently famous for them) isn't easy, but never-the-less...bad, tasteless uneventful cheeseburger, fries were nothing special (seasoning or no seasoning) and the service was piss-poor (Saturday lunch). Sorry to be the dissenting opinion but HPB&G is overrated...at least my single experience was.

The South Location has got to be one of the worst places in town. When I went the appetizer, soup and salad all came at the same time and it was all the same temperature. The steak was tasteless and raw, not rare or medium rare, and the waitress was awful. The crabcakes tasted like greasy tuna and were fairly stiff. It was one of the most frustrating experiences and I would never go there again. My parents came to town and liked the one in Hyde Park and so went to the one South against my recommendation. They came back so completely disappointed at what they had experienced. And to boot they actually employ a chef! Whomever it is ought to banned from the industry for life. I am pretty sure that the positive reviews must have come from managers and owners. The writing styles are very similar. And by the way, the fries have a baked, dried up taste.

You know when you go to a restaurant and you get lost in the choices of what to order, you know that this restaurant is doing something right. The waits can be bad during peak hours, but that just means the restaurant is really good. Parking isn't that great. The ambiance had an Austinish feel to it and can be a nice date place to bring someone (followed by some gelato or some other dessert nearby). I like going to this restaurant because I am determined to try every entree they have on the menu.

well the fries were never worth the hype but they keep getting more dissapointing. come here if you don't really know what you want to eat, when everyone you are with is being indecisive. stick to the sandwhiches, the other entrees just aren't worth it. great vegetarian selection. also, really good desserts. good waffles to for sunday brunch.

I see a lot of negative reviews here, and that's cool and all, but I've honestly never had a bad experience at this place. On the contrary, it's one of my favorite places for a casual-yet-nice meal. The service has always been good. In my experience, the waitstaff have always been the kind of professionals who know how to take your order, quickly get out of the way, and quickly bring things to the table without interrupting your conversation. I've never had a bad experience with the food, either. I like their fries a lot, but maybe that's because I love getting them with an order of sharp cheddar cheese sauce. Last time I was there, I ordered the steamed veggie plate (wanting a light, healthy lunch) and I got an absolutely gigantic pile of veggies, steamed to perfection. Not too soggy, not too raw. Absolutely perfect. I have also enjoyed their soups and sandwiches. Good wine and beer selection, plus a full bar. Overall, this is one of my favorite places in town, not for its fancy food, but mainly for its reliability and service. I'm sorry others seemed to have bad experiences, but I've never had it happen to me.

Re: Female bartenders at HPB&G... My experience has been completely different than that of "Forgiving". I live in the neighborhood and order take-out from the bartenders quite often. I have been served by both of those ladies, who are always quite charming and polite. I suspect I am not the only customer who feels this way, considering their bar is often full when the rest of the restaurant is empty.

This is about the one on Lamar and Westgate, The waitress walked away before we finished ordering, I had to go up to her and say I wasn't done ordering. My daughter never got a drink, no one elses water was refilled, and my plate was cleared away before I was done eating!! She just started throwing napkins on my food! I don't know what the big deal about the fries is. Their crispy but dont have any flavor. I would never recommend this place or ever go there again.

I've eaten a lot of different types of fries over the years and thesse are the best I've had in a long while. They have a unique flavoring that I've never seen on another fry. Excellent with a hamburger on the side. The sirloin hamburger is top notch as well but I've had much better steaks.

I guess if you smother the fatty french fry dippy sauce on everything you might end up ok...you will have to keep St. Davids on call however seeing as to how its your entire caloric intake for the next 6 months. Hyde Park Bar and Grill is OK...Its only redeeming quality is that its next door to Quacks Bakery. The food is nothing to write home about... just your typical Bar and Grill type food. Easily Forgettable.

...I heard the food was great and it was pretty okay. Although, it would have been a lot better if it were served in a timely manner. Our appetizer took 20-30 minutes to arrive and our food about 15-20 minute thereafter. I ordered my burger all they way, meaning well done and I also mentioned "with all the toppings." It was well done, but then I had to wait 20 minutes for the waiter to come back so that I could ask for mustard and mayo. The bloody marys were poor quality. Watered down and lacking a kick you normally find in a good bloody mary. An hour and half later, lunch was finally over for us and alas something showed up in a timely manner, our swiped credit cards.

Hyde Park Bar & Grill is nestled in a cozy house in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, Texas, thus creating an intimate feel. Hyde Park has the best French fries and their chicken fried steak is to-die-for! Best of all, each meal comes with A LOT of food. The chicken fried steak meal comes with two sides AND a salad (the ginger salad dressing is wonderful, by the way). Dessert is also a must-order. Hyde Park is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin.

A great date place for you and a long time boyfriend or girlfriend. Great Food, Try the horseshoe. The Service isnt very speedy but its worth it for the fries and tamales. Its nice that they're till midnight every night, and out of the downtown area, usually void of UT burnt orange, Thank God!

Ok, I finally went to this place after hearing so much about their french fries. I must be missing something or maybe it was a day off for them, but I really didn't see what was so great about their fries. They weren't seasoned. Ok, they were unique. I have never had fries like that before, but they weren't anything to write home about. In fact, if I go back, I will not be getting the fries. The dipping sauce that they serve with the fries was good, though. Now that's something to write home about. Enough on the fries. I did like the overall ambience. It's definitely a cool place to catch up with friends, take a date, or eat out with your parents.

I am about to graduate from UT and will miss going to Hyde Park as it has become a standard amongst my small group of friends. The service has always been prompt and courteous, and the food delicious, from the soup, to the steamed dumplings (albeit spicy), to the burgers, sweet corn and cheese tamales, the corn (so common a vegetable, and yet uniquely seasoned at Hyde Park), and of course the famous french fries. A little bit of something for most any palate. A little bit of Austin I will remember every time a craving for those fries sets in!

Pros: Good Food, a variety, Prompt waiter/ress, Reasonable Prices

Cons: , Slow being seated, Small for big groups

In Short
The restaurant has made the transformation from hip-and-happening spot to neighborhood stalwart. It doesn't draw the young trendies anymore, but does seem to appeal to couples and groups of friends from the university…
