Tru Decks built us a gorgeous deck this summer 2013. Not only was the craftsmanship fantastic but they stayed on track to their commited timelines, they were very professional and we've brought them back to finish our basement which is now in process. Thank you Tru Decks!

We hired Tru Decks in August 2012 to build us a beautiful deck using top of the line composite materials. The only problem was the company was not up to the task. The problems were varied, but most centered on board spacing, a lack of quality control, and an inability to lay the deck out properly.

Our deck borders the house along two sides. Almost inexplicably, Tru Decks left a 1-inch gap along one side, and 3/4-inch along the other. In addition, they left a huge 1 and 3/4-inch gap at the top of the stairs that they claimed would be filled by a piece of deck board that would be cut later.

Although Tru Decks claims to be a Preferred TimberTech Contractor, they failed to use the recommended spacing tool manufactured by that company. From everything weve seen, this spacing tool would have prevented the unusual deck spacing we incurred, which makes it all the more mystifying as to why they did not utilize one.

After countless errors (which they fail to acknowledge to this day) and with the deck incomplete, Tru Decks walked away from our job. We hired another company to finish the deck, as well as fix the numerous mistakes made. Prior to starting work on the deck, each member of that team analyzed our deck. Each person was confused by the massive gaps that adorned our deck, as well as the awkward spacing between deck boards.

Ultimately, the deck failed inspection due to a couple of elementary mistakes like not anchoring the deck to the underlying supports. We ended up going to court with Tru Decks over the value of the work they did. There are numerous other contractors to choose from; my advice is to look elsewhere.

Throughout construction we encountered numerous instances of careless and shoddy workmanship, including but not limited to the following:

1. massive and unequal gaps between the deck boards and the house;
2. irregular spacing between deck boards;
3. abnormal angular cuts, which created an unusual outside-in spacing pattern;
4. stair treads that sloped 1 to 2-inches (left-to-right) over a 4-foot span;
5. uneven board placement, which caused high points and low points on the deck surface;
6. deck posts that were misaligned;
7. stair treads that were cut to unequal lengths;
8. stair treads that exhibited severe bowing; and
9. three code violations two of which resulted in the deck failing final inspection.

After that, Tru Decks WALKED OFF the job. The owner of the company that fixed the deck, a top-rated builder on Angies List, mentioned that his company is called upon a handful of times each year to correct problems left by other contractors, but our DECK WAS THE WORST he had seen thus far.

We ended up going to court with Tru Decks because of the shoddy and careless workmanship, and an inability to come to terms with the final payment. Having hired a number of contractors in the past, we can honestly say that Tru Decks was the ABSOLUTE WORST no real quality standards and an unwillingness to fix the numerous mistakes made. Dont make the same mistake we did, there are numerous quality deck contractors in the Twin Cities to choose from; in our opinion, this isnt one of them.
