The Spalding Inn is a classic hotel with vintage furnishings and spectacular 360-degree views of the White Mountains. Fresh mountain air, delicious meals, and the occasional friendly ghost make this a great place to stay.

If you're looking for a hotel or motel where all the rooms look alike and have TVs and mini-bars, the Spalding Inn isn't it. Expect comfort, one-of-a-kind spacious rooms, and a feeling like you've stepped back in time.

I've been there several times since the new owners (Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of "Ghost Hunters" fame, and their families) bought the hotel and made major improvements around 2007 (or 2008?). It's one of the most relaxing, comfortable places I've ever stayed at.

They've kept the vintage, family-friendly feeling and brought in a friendly, thoughtful staff plus a great chef. Save room for dessert. It's probably going to be memorable and beyond delicious.

The pub downstairs is popular with locals, and a fine place to stop for a sandwich if you're in the area for skiing, hiking or the cog railway.

The hotel isn't cheap, but it's competitively priced and offers things you won't find at larger hotels and chain motels: People who really care about you, remember your name, and say hello when they see you.

I visit the Spalding Inn when I want to get away from it all. I like to go up to the mountains to paint landscapes, so the Spalding Inn is ideal. I have my choice of magnificent views, no matter where I place my chair or set up my portable easel.

My mobile phone service isn't reliable around the Spalding Inn, but I see that as a plus. (If anyone needs to reach me in an emergency, they can call the hotel.) You may need to check your carrier's map to see if that will affect you.

If you want a relaxing weekend or vacation, or you're planning a family reunion, the Spalding Inn is a great choice.
