Pat Mazza could not have made the rental process any easier. A friend recommended her to me when I told him about a series of frustrating experiences with other brokers who had shown me properties that I had already seen and apartments that were clearly out of my price range. I called Pat the next day, and that afternoon was in her office, signing the lease for my fabulous new studio while chatting with my new landlord on the office phone. Pat cut to the chase, understood what I wanted, was candid and informative, and accommodated my needs. I will recommend her highly to anyone looking to rent in the Cambridge area.

Pros: Great properties, personalized experience

From our very first conversation, Pat Mazza was unpleasant, caustic and deeply unprofessional. For example, when I asked her questions about the apartment I was interested in, she often cut me off mid-sentence and gave me abrupt answers. Her tone was that of a bully: she demanded to know my income and scoffed at it, despite the fact that this apartment was in my budget (and my budget had been confirmed as affordable by two other local real estate agents). Each time I spoke with her, Pat's tone made it clear that she had better things to do with her time and her habit of cutting me off and talking down to me gave me the distinct impression that she was deliberately trying to intimidate me.

I hesitated to apply for the apartment because I did not want to give my business to someone as rude as she, but since I liked the apartment so much I was willing to put my concerns aside.
I gave her a deposit, submitted my application, and she told me she would begin work on my approval immediately. I waited almost 48 hours for her to reply. Ultimately, she said that my application had been rejected. When I asked her why, she said that someone else had applied ""simultaneously"" for the apartment, although it's interesting that she never mentioned this other person when she gladly accepted my deposit check (I'm not even sure that's legal). Apparently, this other applicant had a higher income than I did, so the landlord felt more comfortable renting to him. What was truly telling is that Pat mentioned that this applicant had rented from her in the past. It seems to me, therefore, that she had probably had this person in mind for the apartment from the start, and the fact that I applied in the meantime was simply an inconvenient hurdle that she had to overcome. In fact, she noted that my credit score was ""perfect"" and that I was an ""ideal tenant,"" but openly admitted that the building owner preferred the other applicant purely on the basis of income. Whether or not this was actually the owner's preference or Pat Mazza's preference cannot be proven. Certainly the owner had the right to choose whomever he wanted as a tenant, but given Pat's previous ties to the other applicant and my excellent credit history, the fact that I was rejected seems quite suspicious. In any case, her rude conduct throughout the process cannot be excused, and the situation smacks of poor business practice.

Maybe she'd enjoy working with you if you're very wealthy. Otherwise, she is to be avoided at all costs.
