We came to Balkanika on a Wednesday night close to 10pm. This was my first time trying Balkan food, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The place was relatively empty, and we were seated immediately. \r

Went in to Balkanika the other day for dinner. It is hard to dine out with a large group and have authentic food. We searched on CitySearch and after looking at the menu, decided to try Balkanika.

We were more than happy we did! My wife and I love this type of food and have for years . However, our dining partners are often skeptical of anything too "ethnic". That is to say, not steak or spaghetti! They loved every part of the meal. It also had excellent wine options. We will definitely be coming to Balkanika again!

Like its sister restaurant up the street, Kashkaval, Balkanika specializes in fresh vegetable dishes and a casual, semi-rustic atmosphere. Most of the food is cold, but they can heat them up for you if you want. Vegetarians will find lots to love here, with interesting dishes based on various beans, peppers, tomato, even celery root. Meet dishes are available too, but I was so happy to see such a range of meatless dishes, that I stuck with those. Warm pita accompanies the meal, and beer and wine are available - as at Kashkaval, lots of wine is available (but I can't say more because I did not expore it). The environment is halfway between a Balkan or Middle Eastern deli and a pleasant country restaurant. The prices are reasonable, the food is healthy... I'll be back!
