At this Petco location, we have always been treated exceptionally well. We always take our big old friendly lab with us. Everything is well organized and easy to find. None of the areas we walk through with the dog are overly cluttered, which is true for some pet shops, and since our lab is rather tall and lanky for a lab... and likes to meet everyone, and investigate everything, the wide open spaces make it very easy to hold him, and still be able to examine ingredients on pet treats and foods.
We have always found everything we needed, but there are some brands that we have looked for there that we have been unable to find... most recently we were wanting to switch to Nature's Variety Instincts food for our dog. We were also interested in learning about the frozen raw diet from the same company, but were not expecting to find it in such a large store anyway figuring that a smaller boutique would be the only place in the area to find it. We had been purchasing AvoDerm from Petco, but wanted a diet with a little more protein. The brand is however available on the website, and is fairly new to Petco in general from what I understand. Our second choice was available there though, so we got that instead. I would say that they are half and half on the lower and higher quality foods, but in this area, I think most people choose the lower quality due to the difference in costs, and a lot of vets around here seem to recommend them.
The staff there is completely awesome, and very friendly... part of the reason we preferred to choose a food from the store rather than order online, or shop another store was that we just like dealing with the staff there. They're always ready to answer questions, and if they do get stumped on something they have always been very quick to find someone who could answer.
Overall, they do have a very wide selection, but as I feel is true for all superstores, if you are dead seat on a certain type or brand of product and not wanting to compromise on something similar you'll have to look at an upscale boutique. However, the people working there are just as knowledgeable and (in some cases even more so knowledgeable and friendly) than those in a boutique, which is NOT true for all superstores, and the reason I so highly recommend this particular Petco.
It is also worth mentioning that they do not sell puppies from irresponsible breeders which absolutely drives me bananas about some other pet shops in our area. Responsible dog breeders do not sell their puppies to or through pet stores.
