My eldest son and I aren??t exactly what you??d call your typical vacationers. I love spending time with my family, but sometimes it??s tough to find activities that we can all enjoy together. That??s why I knew when my wife and I decided on a Disney excursion a few years back, that my boy Brian and I would be less than enthused after a few days. It was more for our younger kids, the whole Disney idea, but I just knew that after a few days it would be especially hard for Brian to put on a brave face and soldier through the songs, costumes, rides, and noise. He was about sixteen at the time, at the age where young boys feel like they can take on the world, and want to try.
So, I hatched the idea that if he and I could sneak away for a day or two, and get into something a bit more our speed, then it??d make a huge difference in keeping us both sane while we were away. Like a bolt of lightning, it hit me: a fishing trip on the Keys. What could be better for a father and son? Besides, I??d always wanted to try it, and if it involved the outdoors and some type of physical skill, Brian was all in.
We??re far from expert fishermen, so I didn??t want to book a trip that was over our heads, so to speak. Captain Brian Helms of Islamorada Fly Fishing was the man who made it all happen for us. After just a few emails, he put all me worries to rest, assuring me that even though we were novices, he could still show us a good time. And man, he wasn??t lying. We spend a whole day out on the flats, and just spending time with my son, enjoying the day, laughing and just enjoying the experience, was just what the doctor ordered.
Kids grow so fast, but I remember that trip like it was yesterday, just me and my oldest boy. I have this great picture of him, after catching his first mangrove snapper, and the look on his face is priceless. I don??t even really need the picture, it??s like a tattoo in my memory. The memory is just as priceless, and I have Brian Helms to thank for that.
