In response to Norman B. Writing YES on the surgical limb is required as preoperative saftey. Insures surgery is done on the correct knee. Surgeries can often run late. I dont think you want your surgeon in a hurry on your surgery to make the next. Im sorry you didnt have the expected outcome but you complaints dont refelect on the physician capabiltiy

I was once highly athletic and I had a nagging knee pain plus my knee was swelling up. I did not sufficiently try RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). I unfortunately agreed to knee surgery. I was asked to sign a form for ??lateral release? on the day of surgery. Kerlan Jobe had me write the word ??YES?? on my own knee and they took a picture to cover their butts. Dr. Clarence Shields was late to surgery. I woke up to find they did an expensive arthroplasty. Since, surgery, I had all my old problems plus new problems. After a 4-hour wait, Dr. Shields had himself paged to avoid answering my questions. I am no longer an athlete because I can no longer run or even walk for long periods. I very much regret knee surgery.

I completely agree with Joe M. in that Dr. Gloussman is a skilled, professional, surgeon who scoped my knee last month, shaving meniscus and repairing tendons. The surgery center in LA was wonderful, professional, and as close to painless as possible. I also agree with Joe in that the Anaheim office is a complete joke, with my average wait time of an hour and a half in the waiting room, followed by another half hour in the room. The receptionists are rude and unprofessional. If you are running an hour behind, tell me and I'll go next door to hooters for a beer. Don't make me sit there and watch a repeating infomercial for an hour!!If you need knee surgery, I would definitely recommend Dr. Gloussman and Kerlan-Jobe. I would also do everything I could to not go to Anaheim.

Dr. Glousman (out of the Anaheim office) is very professional, helpful and positive. He performed my ACL reconstruction at the L.A. KJ surgery center 18 months ago and my knee feels great!

CAVEAT--the office administration is absolutely horrible. The Anaheim office consistently screwed up my appointments. Twice they completely forgot to put them into the calendar. I spent 1-1.5 hours waiting for most appointments. And the communication at the surgery center was abysmal--they never told me how much vicodin to take after the surgery. I followed the instructions on the bottle and learned the hard way that it wasn't enough. The day after my surgery, the nerve block in my knee wore off and I experienced the most excrutiating pain I could possibly imagine. After about 3-4 hours on the phone I was able to get someone from the clinic to call me back and tell me that I should have been taking twice the dosage listed on the bottle! Isn't that something they should tell you before the fact?! They also told me that it would take about 6 hours for the level of vicodin in my body to build up and take effect. That was a fun day...

The doctors at KJ are all great very, very reputable. However the administration at this clinic and the Anaheim office are the poorest of any medical facility I've ever used.

Dr. Glousman gets 5 stars. The administration gets 1.

This is a group of world-renowned sports medicine doctors. Most are excellent, such as Dr. Shields, Kvitne, Lombardo, Yocum, tibone, etc. If you have knee problems I would suggest Dr. Shields, Lombardo or Kvitne. For shoulders Dr. Lewis Yocum.

For the spine, I would not recommend this office, I would instead suggest USC.

Biggest problem at Kerlan Jobe is keeping patients waiting long periods of time.

PROS: Terrific and compassionate doctors
CONS: Doctors for the spine are not terrific for anything serious

Kerlan Jobe is a huge, state of the art complex with numerous fellowship trained orthopedic doctors. MRIs and other diagnostic tests are performed here and the staff is compassionate and professional. Appointments can be obtained relatively quickly. William Dillin in particular is an excellent doctor who truly seems dedicated to medicine and his patients.

Dr. Kvitne specializes in sports-related injuries and treated knee problems that developed while training for a marathon. I found him likeable, knowledgeable about the effects of long distance running, and very to-the-point. Here's some information on him from his web site:

Dr. Ronald S. Kvitne is team physician for the Los Angeles Kings and Galaxy. He is also a consultant for the Anaheim Angels and Mighty Ducks and the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers. After receiving his undergraduate degree fromthe University of North Dakota, he completed his medical studies at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. His post graduate training included a general surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University Medical Center and a fellowship in sports medicine with the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Dr. Kvitne is a member of numerous medical societies and is a certified medical examiner. A board certified orthopedic surgeon, he has publish
