Sadly, Gale's is no longer a reliable place for a good meal and attentive service. On a recent visit, our waitress was brusk and dismissive and the manager was more interested in turning tables than caring for patrons. Neither the waitress nor the manager adequately explained the calamari on the menu, and when the dish arrived, my friend discovered a LONG hair in her food. The entire table was disgusted. The manager took the food away, but did not apologize or offer anything as a replacement.. The waitress breezed by with a chirpy, "Can I get you something else?" but no apology. The manager didn't even bother to say goodbye or apologize for what happened. The former personal feeling of the restaurant is gone; it's now more of a mill. With all the wonderful choices for good (hairless) food in Pasadena, don't waste your time and money at Gale's.

Pros: Pasta dishes

Cons: Poor service; disinterested management

.

I will only say..... the service was awful...possibly the worst I have experienced in many years.
There was a hair in my food...need I say anything more??!!!!
Stay away!!!

I had lived in Pasadena for quite some time before I knew this place existed; it can be easy to miss when you're driving down the street. My wife and I always enjoy going. I have had both the pizza and the pasta and both were excellent. I always enjoy the atmosphere and its fun to eavesdrop on the interesting mix of people that come to dinner. The owner seems ever-present, floating around talking to the guests she knows. She seems like a very warm hospitable person and I think that comes through in the restaurant as a whole. Recommended for a romantic date on the town. Call for reservations.

Darling Husband thought we should finally try Gayle's as we have not been there to eat since it was "Greco's." (Ahhh....Greco's...Yum!) Wow, what a completely different dining experience. The lasagna was as if they microwaved a Stouffer's frozen dinner. The pizza (We know good pizza in Pasadena) was dry and over-baked. It was like fast-food pizza. The service is uneven, with attitude. Gayle's is not real "Italian" food. It's like Olive Garden Italian food. Sorry, but it's true.
Ambience is O.K. nothing more. Parking is ample. I am mystified by the crowd, considering this is not tasty Italian food. Locals know where to find fabulous Italian in Pasadena, and I will help you, so you don't waste an evening out eating pedestrian "Italian."
Celestino's is first rate, from appetizers to desserts. Mi Piace is wonderful... Best lasagna I have ever eaten. And of course, the critically acclaimed Tre Venezie- expensive but so worth every dime. It is one of Pasadena's top restaurant's bar none.
Dining out these days, I really look forward to a special meal, and I will spend the money for a lovely night out. Gayle's does not fit the bill. It is generic food, with minimal to none in the atmosphere department. Not a romantic date-night kind of place. Loud and small. Greco's was not loud like this, even when packed, so I can not explain the ear splitting noise. We won't return to Gayle's, but we will "vet" new dining experiences more carefully. Life's too short for unsatisfying dinners!

My husband and I read some of the good reviews and went to try it one night. Good location, cute little place. They need to turn the lights down! It was so bright in there and we were hoping for a bit of atmosphere. It was so bright I had to leave, I am one for ambience!

This could be an outstanding restaurant and there's no doubt that it does very well. However, we have been rushed in and out so many times, we don't think about it anymore. One night, we had wine, salad and dinner in less than 20 minutes - ridiculous. There are plenty of good restaurants in Pasadena and many with better food. It's a shame. This rating could easily be 'highly recommended' if it wasn't such a madhouse. So if you're in a big hurry - good choice. If you'd like to taste your food - find something else.

Cons: You have to hold on to your plate or someone will grab it

My wife and I had an excellent meal here. We were greeted by very friendly owner ("Gale"). Food was excellent, and the atmosphere is charming. Also, prices are very reasonable. We will be returning.

My friend and I decided to go to Gale's after the RAVE reviews, and how its always so packed whenever we drive by on the weekends. We were excited to taste the Italian food, as we are both from a part of New York known for it's spectacular Italian. We sat down and I was surprised to find one of my favorite combos- salmon with risotto and artichoke- on the menu. Of course I had to order that, and my friend ordered the chicken parm. We waited a while for our food and when it came out... I almost left right then. There was a bed of bright yellow risotto... which looked like mac and cheese, not appealing to the eye. I took a bite and was just completely disappointed. Usually, you omit any cheese when serving risotto with seafood, but this stuff was like eating rice with cheese sauce thats been sitting for a while- so that its kind of coagulated. Needless to say- that stuff was far from risotto. Salmon was alright. Artichoke was HORRENDOUS. Oh, and I forgot that there was shrimp involved... probably because it had no taste. The friend was unimpressed with the Italian classic, chicken parmesan, complaining about the toughness of the chicken and the unimpressive sauce. Is this proof that Californians don't know good Italian? I'm not sure, but this place is bad- don't be fooled by the crowd. Go down the street to Louise's.

I went here last Friday after a recommendation from a friend in Chicago! I found the location and parking to be perfect, not to far out of the way but this meant easy parking and no long walks. I took my 2 daughters and a friend of theirs. 13 and 16 years olds plus me and I'm a foodeeee! Mussels AWESOME, Steak AWESOME, Clams Linguine AWESOME, Pizza AWESOME, Ravioli AWESOME. Service AWESOME and the we only waited 15 minutes for our table on a Friday night. Priced very fair and felt comfortable in busy surroundings. Anyone who gives this place a bad review needs to try again as they probably just got unlucky. I've eaten in just about every Italian restaurant of note around the country and this is a MUST for anyone wanting great food at a fair price.

I'll come right out and say it, I went to Gale's for pizza and nothing else. I live in Pasadena and had been hearing rave reviews about Gale's for years, especially the pizza, so I grabbed my girlfriend and off we went. Service was attentive, decor was average, location on Fair Oaks is average, not the best spot, not the worst. We ordered quickly and I sat there fidgeting, waiting for our "awesome" pizza to arrive. When it did, one glance at it and I was worried. I believe we got a Roma cheese, which traditionally has very little sauce and chunks of tomato - I've had this style of pizza many times. This one just plain sucked. No taste at all. We choked it down and got out of there in a hurry. I like to give restaurants a fair shake though, so I'll probably go back and try a different style of pizza to see if my first experience was just a fluke. I'm not holding my breath though. My pizza-sense (like Spidey-sense, but for pizza) is telling me "stay away!" Despite this I'll probably go back and give this place another whirl. I just can't believe people would rave about this place if the pizza was THIS bad, so I guess I'll chalk it up to an off night and give it another go.

Our first trip to Gale's. My partner is very fond of Brighton, so she suggested we go. She loved the steamed artichoke and risotto, as well as drinking our wine out of the Brighton goblet. I didn't enjoy my chicken piccata (lemon and caper sauce too strong) or the roasted olives (complete with seeds) very much. Corkage has gone up to $10. I had the spaghetti side with my chicken and ordered it "al dente" (firm) and it came horribly undercooked. I sent it back and it was returned better but still undercooked. Any Italian restaurant that doesn't take more pride in how their spaghetti is cooked is a big question mark to me. The tables are too close together, so much so that a customer walking by brushed the bread off our bread plate onto the table with her sweater and we were afraid the waiter would knock over our bottle of wine when he was waiting on the next table. Our waiter was very nice and attentive until the food was brought, but didn't come over again (to pour wine, etc) unless I called him. Finally, what tipped me over to the dark side was the group of very loud, laughing, cackling women sitting directly behind us that totally destroyed the atmosphere. This is not the place for a romantic date. With the kitchen and eating area in the same, rather small room, the noise level is quite high. We will probably be back, since my partner thought more of the place than I did, but I will definitely order a pizza or the spinich lasagna next time. A card came with the bill offering to keep us informed of any specials if we give them our e-mail address and birthdays. They also asked for feedback of our experience which I will be more than happy to give them. Hopefully we can see some improvement in the future.

I returned to Gale's for a birthday party and was quite pleased with the overall experience hence my re-write of my review. The service was attentive and quick. Well at the spur of the moment two friends and I decided to try Gales out. apon entering we were a bit lost as to where to meet the hostess who we then spotted behind the counter eating which just looked bad. We were then seated by our waitress who was a bit rude but we tried to over look that. Well the food was very tasteless, my Raviolis were cold and a bit tuff, friends recommended pasta was very bland and my other friends Chicken cutlet in her words "tasted like a frozen dinner". A nice location and setting but Gales was not very good with the food (That horrid Beppo de Bucco place is even better)

A friend of mine had recommended this place for a while, but I never got around to trying it. Boy, was I missing out! The service was wonderful and the food was perfectly tasty. There were only two of us for dinner that night, but we sure had a great time with the Warm Olives to start (which were full bodied and delicious), a Garlic Mushroom Pizza as our meal and a Hot Berry Crumble Dessert with Vanilla Gelato to top it off. We had initially intended on making it a small meal night, but we couldn't help ourselves with all the great offerings on the menu. YUM, YUM. That's all I have to say. It was all perfectly prepared and the service made the food taste even better. This warm, cozy, almost "hole in the wall" restaurant makes you feel at home. The owner even came out to greet everyone at thier tables and make sure they were happy. You can't miss this. It is one of the best Northern Italian restaurants I've been to.

We have been coming to Gale's since it opened several years ago. It was great then and every year it just seems to get a little better. Friendly service, good bar and good food. The owners are always around, and it shows both in the atmosphere of the restaurant and the consistent quality of the food. Pizzas are great, thin crusted numbers. They also serve buratta, a wonderfully creamy mozarella. They have a specials menu that rotates daily - anything off there is reliably good. This place is so comfortable and easy - they have their own parking lot, they are a little ways from old town so you don't have to deal with the crowds and traffic. Can't say enough nice things about it.

Heard lots of good things about Gale's. We started with shrimp cocktail, caeser's salad and Margarita pizza. Shrimp & salad good. Pizza so-so.

Entrees included spaghetti, rack of lamb and Italian burrito. Entrees so-so.

I liked the close tables and rustic trattoria look more than I cared for the food. This really is an Americanized version of Italian food. Lots of non-Italians eating in restaurant
that features Italian food is not a good sign.

Would not eat there again and cannot recommend restaurant to anyone else. Service was ok.

I had to tell someone. We just had the most wonderful meal at Gale's. The blackberry Crem Brulee was better than Wolfgang Puck's. I promise you. I am a chef and restaurant owner for the last 30 years. I have eaten everywhere. You can eat at Gale's twice a week and want to come back for more. The Garlic Bread actually melted in your mouth like warm crispy cotton candy. I requested something not on the menu and I didn't have to get Congress to Ok it. We were delighted with every moment of warmth and goodness. AAAA++++Highly Recommended. PS Drinking wine out of the $40.00 Brighton Goblet is fit for a King.

The bread was good.
The fig & prosciuto appetizer was fresh, but bland. The European seabass and was over cooked (to the point of disintegration) and served on-top of grey/over-cooked vegetables. The shrimp rissotto was unusual - too much corn, a little on the mushy side, and lacking in flavors.
Service was generally fine, BUT the entrees were served while we were still eating the appetizer - shameful - so much for a relaxed night out.
Way over-priced for the quality of the food and service.

I love Gale's and will drive from Orange County just to enjoy the food, atmosphere, and great service. I love the warmth of the staff and how accomodating the owners are - even when the restaurant is crowded. My favorites are the goat cheese pizza, rosemary chicken (special item), and meat lasagna.

We eat out quite a bit, mostly in the Old Town Pasadena area. Gale's has good food, great service and average value. Gale is often in the restaurant and makes a point of spending time with her regular customers and recognizing new patrons. Rene', her husband, is the official frendly greeter......Maybe just a little too "friendly" on occasion with some. Overall the experience is good. Gale's is one of our regular stops. We were sorry to see Greco leave this location but happy to have found Gale's in his place.

Gale is often in the restaurant and makes a point of spending time with her regular customers and recognizing new patrons. Rene', her husband, is the official frendly greeter......Maybe just a little too "friendly" on occasion with some. Overall the experience is good. Gale's is one of our regular stops. We were sorry to see Greco leave this location but happy to have found Gale's in his place.

overrated and overpriced. Pizza is best thing there, and still, Domino's thin crust is almost as good. Pastas uninspired and overworked. Been there 3 times, no big deal

It's always busy, but the food is worth the wait. It's interesting to experience a meal where you can actually taste individual ingredients. Even when they're busy, they do their best to get you a table. The owners came to our table to make sure all was well. We felt like family. If my eyes water when I take a bite, I know the food is great. I practically cried. The meal was a wonderful mix of flavors and a great atmosphere. Every time a waiter passed with a plate delivery, I promised myself I would order that next time. I also noticed many people greeted and hugged each other as they entered, so obviously its quite popular with a lot of regulars. Weve been back four times and now the owners hug us! The tables are close, but its like that in Italy too! Very authentic and wonderfully delicious.

If you read a review of Gale's that shines a bright light on itself, recognize the source.
My duaghter and I went there after a softball game, I am not from the area but had eaten there before when it was Greco's. First of all, the name tricked me(thought it sounded like the same place). Then the food.......Pepperoni pizza and lasagna........
Seriously, just because I'm honest........and this is a forum to make an honest critique....... NOT IMPRESSED !
Pizza was just plain....no quality flavor at all---Lasagna according to my 15 year old was "not very good". Again Dear Friends........Recognize the source of the "good" reviews.........Yours Truely, Dukepoope

Pros: food didn't have mold, didn't get sick, learned where not to

Cons: cooks, food, pretentious owner

after much searching for italian food around this area, i found this place. just like other reviews say, staff is great, the owner and her husband are there every night and love to be there. they are very gracious and are always very friendly.

i went there last year on New Years eve. as expected every table was taken and the wait was gonna be around 1hour and 30min, so we waited, since we really love the food.. after 5 mins of waiting we encountered teh waiter whom i have gotten to know over the visits i have made to this restaurant. well, he said. "you dont have a reservation?" i said "no, what an idiot", "dont worry he responded" and got me a table for two in 5 mins..
remember thats friday night on new years eve around 8:30pm.. you can just imagine how busy any restaurant would be.

to also note, i have invited many of my friends to this restaurant. and i have not heard any of them say they didnt like it. every dish is great and good protions. and they SUPERB desserts. i especially recommend the Creme'Brule.. i like that as an appetizer.. =)

if you can i recommend being waited by Joe, he's very friendly and gets you laughing.. ( he's the one who got me the seats on New Years day.. )

they make ravioli every otehr day differently.. one of my favorites.. i definitely recommend that. also, steaks are great. and if you see the oso buco on the menu, make sure to get it.

PROS: great food for VERY good prices.. you pay so much more other places..
CONS: small venue.. ( but that makes it feel more comfortable ) make reservations

Gale's has a VERY friendly staff. They remembered me after one visit, and when I brought a new friend, they made sure her first visit was a special one. The entree portions are huge, and the desserts are chock full of temptation. Sign up for their emails, and you'll get invitations for free glasses of wine, free desserts, and other special deals. A high energy, good value alternative to the snootier places in old Pas.

This is, by far, one of Pasadena's best restaurants. It's a little off the beaten path (a welcome change from the Old Town crowds) and offers consistant, high-quality food and service. Pay them a visit, you won't be disappointed.

Gale's has been a great find for lunch and dinner. Gale is usually there greeting everyone - creating such a friendly atmosphere. For lunch the pesta chicken salad is such a fresh, light meal - it's not usually on the menu - but if you ask for it - they will usually bring it out. Dinner is the same friendly place. Gale's can fill up quickly - so make reservations

The restaurant is cozy and warm with a boutique feel about it. Its high class without being pretentious. The owner, Gale, is warm and friendly and truly cares about the comfort of her guests. The chef, I found out is from Emilia-Romagna, a region in Northern Italy; this is truly present in the food on the menu, especial in the dinner specials. Its as authentic as youll find. For Lunch, I recommend the Pizza Special, which an individual pizza and salad. I usually go for the goat cheese and pesto pizza. Its the best in town. For dinner, Im a fan of the specials; pick any, theyre all great. Best restaurant in the Pasadena area, by far.

I am mystified that anyone would have a problem with this restaurant. Yes, it's small, but that's what makes it great - a phenomenal emphasis on ingredients and perfect service. I was there on a night when Gale was there herself - she is definitely on top of her restaurant! If you want an intimate restaurant experience focused on providing its customers with the freshest food, innovative wines and attentive service -without pretention (unique in LA) - then visit Gale's. You WON'T be disappointed. Try her pizza - unbelieveable!

i rarely eat out, and when i do, i really like to treat myself to an uncommonly delicious meal. After eating Gale's food for the first time, I must say that I have truley found a jem in the greater LA area. The penne pasta was out of this world!!! I will definitely be re-visiting this lovely place soon.

I ate at this restaurant based on all of the high rankings and compliments. Maybe I was expecting great food? What are people thinking giving this place all of the praise. Do these people eat out anywhere else? what is the barometer for them?

Gales was not that great. The seatsarewaytoclosetogether. the bread was the best part of the meal. How sad is it that first thing you eat is the best? It all went downhill from there.

This restaurant is your basic run of the mill italian place. I am convinced Gale and/or her friends post on this site frequently to drum up business.

Been to Gale's a few times now, and we still have not had any negative experiences yet. Everything they did is of high quality and at reasonable prices. This is a place that you can frequent. Whether is for a pizza & salad dinner or a fancy meal, you would not be disappointed. Gale and Renee, as owners, are as friendly as they come. Tables are a little too close to each other, but somehow they are not that significant once you are occupied with the delicious food.

As locals, many of us morned Greco's move and shift towards the upscale from being our beloved neighborhood bistro. Imagine our delight when we finally broke down and showed up for a meal at Gale's! The food was far more handily prepared, the pizza's were without peer, and the cuisine in general was much more varied, inventive and succulent. Wow! We knew we had to have died and gone to heaven! I can only say Mr. Dukepoope needs to get a life as well as a dictionary! That is pretentiousness and you spell it G-r-e-c-o's... we love Gale's!

Delusional, that's all I have to say about the peson who made the last review. They must have caught the restaurant on an off night because I have never had an experience like that. The many times I've been to Gales, they've truly made me feel like family. Gale and her husband Renee, always check on our table to make sure we are well taken care of. The food is great, especially the chicken picatta. This is what Greco's should have been!Make sure to make reservations however as they fill up fast on the weekends.

You can never tire of the menu at Gales as there are daily special menus that are always a nice surprise, like the halibut 3 inches thick was so delicate, succulent, yet cooked through, and covered with a touch of lemon-caper sauce. The veal marsala served with asparagus and potatoes was also mouth watering. The waiter excitedly stated "I'll be happy to find out for you" and he truly was!! They used elegent wine glasses with silver stems. At first glance it looks like there is limited parking but if you dine in the evening there is plenty of open spaces at the rear of the driveway.

There were nine of us on a Saturday evening celebrating the engagement of a friend of ours. I had been to Gale's once before and was impressed with the food and service. I've recommended restaurants to my friends before, but their tastes differ from mine. I'm pleased to say I finally hit the jackpot. They all loved the food and service we received from Joseph. The chefs out did themselves once again. Thanks to Gale and her employees our evening was wonderful. Good food and good friends, what more could I ask for?

Gale helped me pull off a very important event for our sorority without a hitch. It was the first time we were meeting the founding mothers, 7 of them, along with 2 other alumni from the 1950's. Since we didn't know who they were until last year, it was a huge deal to finally meet them. Gale let me pick items from the menu and she typed it up, organize the menu, and her staff was wonderful. They were very tentative and our 40 members had a blast! I highly recommend this restaurant for a group get-together and the food is delicious! esp, the mushroom ravioli.

We just ate here a week ago & loved it. The food was very well done & tasted astronomical. It's just a short walk from our house so we are definitely going to be back. In fact, we wanted to go back the very next day! It was that good & the service was also great. Unpretentious wait staff & great food. Can't beat that in Pasadena!

Gale is wonderful. From the first time I went, I felt like I had found my new favorite restaurant. Gale made me feel comfortable, checked on me at the table, and personally apologized when something went a little wrong with my order. The pizza is excellent - truly NY style w/ perfect sauce! Also great salads and fabulous (no butter) biscotti!

It is clear all of the raving reviews below were written by maybe one or two persons obviously with a stake in the restaurant. They didn't even make an effort to change their style of writing. That's unfortunate as this is supposed to be a venue for honest interpretations of restaurants and not a place for restauranteurs and their family members to impersonate (unconvincingly at that) overly enthusiastic "patrons". I ate at Gale's approximately 4 months ago and had an ordinary lasangna. The salad I had as an appetizer could have been fresher but the biscottis given at the end of the meal were good. As for the ambience, Gale's is basically a cafeteria with the tables crammed in too close to each other.
