Reviews for NuWilshire Theatre

Ratings_icons Really cool theater with old school charm

NuWilshire is one of my favorite theaters in the area! It isn't like those big stuffy chains where you feel like a piece of some cookie cutter assembly line of patrons. They show alot of films that are hard to see elsewhere and you can really find some gems. While they don't have 20 screens or anything like that they make up for it with good staff, good prices, and good films.

PROS: Old school charm
CONS: I don't have anything negative to say

This is a great vintage looking theatre dating way back. They showcase all the latest independent films. It is not that big but it has the quaint, comfortable feeling. Never that many people so you don't have to deal with lines and mobs of people. The staff is friendly.

I used to drive by the NuWilshire on my out from UCLA to Santa Monica. Most of the time I wouldn't recognize the names of the films being played there. I now realize: thats a good thing! NuWilshire features films the best films from the indie and foreign scenes. If you are willing to take a chance on a film you are unfamiliar with, you will usually be glad you did. If you are less risky, the theatre will provide you written info on the films before you purchase your ticket. The theatre is older, andcharmingly so- you do feel that you are getting a piece of the old Westside experience. Though it is older, it is carefully maintained and not unkempt.

An important part of Los Angeles independent movie scene, this old theatre generally screens two new movies at a time. While not as luxurious as the newer auditorium-seating multiplexes, this theater still has a certain older charm and in addition hosts a variety of movies by lesser known film-makers as well as a range of independent and foreign fare.
