I saw the Rauschenberg exhibit here which was free after 6pm on one of the weekdays. They had a knowledgeable person give a talk on his works. The experience couldn't be beat, especially if you are into modern art.

If The Getty or LACMA is overwhelming, MOCA is the place for you. Both the Warhol Exhibit and the Basquiat one were really well planned, and even in the biggest crowds this is a place that is easy to take in. While you're out, hit up one of downtown's good eats.
PROS: Cool art
CONS: Downtown parking issues

MOCA is a gem of LA. This small museum always has something exciting going on. Beautiful and exciting contemporary art and a cool gift store too. Parking isn't easy, but you can score meter spots if you look.

Opened in the late '80's this museum is very interesting. The shape and colors of the exterior of the building are something worth looking at, but when you are inside you will be really captured by the collection that includes abstract expressionist period, pop art and so forth. The museum is also strong in photography.

If you love Contemporary Art this is one of the finest museums in the states. Exhibits are always mind blowing and leave you with a new refreshed look at contemporary art. Bring someone who doesnt like modern art to a really cool exhibit and watch them come out discussing certain pieces that they either hated or loved. And then point out that is the "whole point" of art. The artist WANTS you to have an opinion of it, whether it be negative or positive. Modern art tends to do that more than any other style. Go to the gift shop for the most spectacular assortment of "cool" stuff. Watch out, you will spend just as much time in there as museum!
