The stone-walled building that houses Vella Cheese is conveniently located just off the Sonoma Plaza, right next to the bike trail that crosses the town. This makes it a fun stop for local bike riders and walkers, in addition to out-of-towners. Their cheeses are handmade and flavorful. The jack cheese may be the best youll ever taste, its melt in your mouth creamy. If youre visiting downtown Sonoma, make sure to take a quick walk around the corner on First St. East and get a variety pack to go at Vellas. It's all good.

This is the "other" and much better cheese store in the town of Sonoma. We have been going to this store for at least 20+ years and it has got to be one of the best cheese makers in the state. The best is the classic dry Monterey cheese and it has won a ton of awards. I also like the cheddar. We love this store and always try to visit it at least once a month!

Since the 1930's, Vella Cheese has been making world class and award winning dairy products in an old converted stone brewery building off Sonoma Plaza. Their cheese is amazing, and faves include High Moisture Jack Cheeses that are made in small quantities via a traditional manner. Rolled and shaped in muslin by hand, no machine made cheese have this flavor. Vella cheeses feature a crisp refreshing flavor due to the freshest milk delivered from nearby pastures. They also do a special select dry jack, which has a nutty asiago or almost reggiano parmesan like edge without all the salt. They suggest their grated Dry Jack's need not even be refrigerated. Stop by and chat over the cheese samples they'll offer and find out what local specials they have on hand as other farmer's and dairymen in the area will trade their products with the old revered but warm & friendly owner Ig ( a former mayor of Sonoma). An added attraction in the summer is the Patch a self serve produce stand just up the lane.
